DJI Flip The Gauntlet: ActiveTrack Sports Follow-Me Testing

The DJI Flip is the second DJI product (after the DJI Neo) to incorporate its fully built-in autonomous tracking capability. Up till these products, you had to have some form of controller involved in order to actively track/follow you for any distance (even back in the old school days when you could use just your phone, it was still a secondary piece of gear). With the DJI Flip and DJI Neo, you can simply tap the buttons on the drone itself, and then off you go, drone in tow.

But, is it actually any good at that? And, is the more exposed gimbal (compared to the DJI NEO) a liability?

Obviously, I set out to put that to the test, as always.

In this video, I put my DJI Flip through The Gauntlet and its five stages, to see how well it handles. It’s notable to see how this compared to the tiny little $199 DJI Neo from just a few months ago, on this same course. Both in terms of obstacle avoidance (and crashes), as well as image quality.

To see how well this drone holds up, hit the play button up above. Even if you don’t care about drones, I suspect you’ll find it entertaining.

Thanks for watching!

I’ve been on tenterhooks for this video. The Flip came out just after I got my Neo. The more I’ve seen of it, the more I like my Neo and forgive its failings (mostly battery life and low light capability). For a new drone flier, the versatility of the Neo makes it perfect. And it’s nearly indestructible.

If I’m going for something bigger (which will be about better camera resolution and improved wind resistance) I think it will be a Potensic Atom 2. I don’t want to get into the 250g+ drone flying rules and regulations.

(BTW there is a setting in the DJI Fly app to reset the gimbal… worth trying before you retire it)

    • Yeah, I really hope/wish/whatever DJI will come out with a NEO Pro. As long as it’s sub-200ish grams (249 of course, but really in the sub-200 would be better), with the camera of their Mini series (which should fit, just sans 3-axis gimbal), it’d be perfect.

As for the drone, the gimbal was broke. I sent it to service, and thankfully they agreed that the shooting straight-up and hitting the street above it, then randomly cutting the engines and crashing own, wasn’t per spec. So…free repair!

This sounds like some astroturfing for that random drone brand.

    Hi Ray,
nice review as always. One question: Do you now have to fly back to the Netherlands each time you want to test drones? 😀
    Ben

    • Haha…

I still have the main DCR Cave there (finding an office space has been tough). So I swing back every few months. I kinda consolidate things then. While there are many pieces of the Gauntlet here in Mallorca, I’ve yet to find one cohesive ‘track’ that’s as perfect as this.

      Cheers!

I’ve been stuck on which to get … DJI Neo or the HoverAir Pro!
