Have some fun in the travel section.
I travel a fair bit, both for work and for fun. Here’s a bunch of random trip reports and daily trip-logs that I’ve put together and posted. I’ve sorted it all by world geography, in an attempt to make it easy to figure out where I’ve been.
My Photography Gear: The Cameras/Drones/Action Cams I Use Daily
The most common question I receive outside of the “what’s the best GPS watch for me” variant, are photography-esq based. So in efforts to combat the amount of emails I need to sort through on a daily basis, I’ve complied this “My Photography Gear” post for your curious minds (including drones & action cams!)! It’s a nice break from the day-to-day sports-tech talk, and I hope you get something out of it!
The Swim/Bike/Run Gear I Use List
Many readers stumble into my website in search of information on the latest and greatest sports tech products. But at the end of the day, you might just be wondering “What does Ray use when not testing new products?”. So here is the most up to date list of products I like and fit the bill for me and my training needs best! DC Rainmaker 2023 swim, bike, run, and general gear list. But wait, are you a female and feel like these things might not apply to you? If that’s the case (but certainly not saying my choices aren’t good for women), and you just want to see a different gear junkies “picks”, check out The Girl’s Gear Guide too.
Is there away to filter the “Best efforts” to exclude virtual rides as I find these times are unrealistically fast.
Nothing that I see at the moment. Though, you can just remove it from the listing.
But yeah, I agree, virtual rides shouldn’t really be included in this list (for all sorts of technical issues, not really academic ones).
I’d also like to have the ability to exclude my virtual rides from the challenges I join. “Miles” inside are just not the same as miles outside. (Or km for you fans of French Imperial, although Strava challenges are all metric anyway.)
100% agree. This is a very obvious error so can’t believe it wasn’t fixed before full release of the feature!
My best 10 miles is a descent off Zwift’s Tourmalet where I averaged 65kph over the 10 miles :-)
I could just remove the efforts but given most of my winter training is indoors and all my racing, then I’ll be doing a lot of curating to make the feature work as intended.
Looks like Strava has changed this to exclude virtual rides.
Steve
Looks like best times are based on elapsed time and not moving time. Long rides show as artificially slow due to cafe stops or other breaks.
Exactly. I was disappointed to see that (but sort of understand). My 20.4mph/avg 110 miler came in at 17.5 due to 2 store breaks.
Long rides show as realistically slow due to stops. Moving time is the artifical contruct the doesn’t reflect reality, not elapsed duration.
While it’s nice that Strava adds things to their platform, this stuff is already on other platforms for no extra charge.
Always nice to see new features included in Strava, although these now wont be too useful for me personally. What I miss however, in combination with the strava-live-segments on my Garmin, is a broader and more detailled choice of “records” to chose from when racing the segment. Most of my personal bests on the segments I’m usually on date from a few years back and are out of reach right now. Would be cool if Strava included categories of best efforts in the app but also to be use as live-segments based on the current season (tbd when to start/end), year or last 3 or 6 months. This would be much more motivating instead of being minutes behing a past former-self of many years ago.
Just a quick question: Site has become defunct for me as ads now pop up full screen approximately every 15s – I’m wondering if that’s intentional? Thanks!
Refining my post regarding ads popping up fullscreen: apparently related to „X“ – fullscreen only when I get to the site via link in „X“ on iOS. Using safari everything is working as it used to 👍🏻😅
I cancelled Strava Premium years ago, since it doesn’t really bring any value that Garmin gives you for free with a Garmin device. I had been asking for a power curve on mobile for years prior to this. Seems like the only thing they’ve done is brought the power curve that was visible on desktop since the 2010s and brought it mobile. Can’t say I’m blown away.
I hope Strava doesn’t go out of business because it has a record of all my rides for the past number of years, but if this is the best they’ve got for features and additions, I’m shocked anyone still subscribes.
