Have some fun in the travel section.
I travel a fair bit, both for work and for fun. Here’s a bunch of random trip reports and daily trip-logs that I’ve put together and posted. I’ve sorted it all by world geography, in an attempt to make it easy to figure out where I’ve been.
My Photography Gear: The Cameras/Drones/Action Cams I Use Daily
The most common question I receive outside of the “what’s the best GPS watch for me” variant, are photography-esq based. So in efforts to combat the amount of emails I need to sort through on a daily basis, I’ve complied this “My Photography Gear” post for your curious minds (including drones & action cams!)! It’s a nice break from the day-to-day sports-tech talk, and I hope you get something out of it!
The Swim/Bike/Run Gear I Use List
Many readers stumble into my website in search of information on the latest and greatest sports tech products. But at the end of the day, you might just be wondering “What does Ray use when not testing new products?”. So here is the most up to date list of products I like and fit the bill for me and my training needs best! DC Rainmaker 2023 swim, bike, run, and general gear list. But wait, are you a female and feel like these things might not apply to you? If that’s the case (but certainly not saying my choices aren’t good for women), and you just want to see a different gear junkies “picks”, check out The Girl’s Gear Guide too.
Ray, you might also want to add Training Peaks’ new Analytics and SparkUp. It shows how your numbers compare to others in a bunch of different categories, e.g. age range, M/F, over a time range, etc
Good point, a good one for next week’s list! It’s cool stuff, they gave me a demo a few months back.
The Sky Dio dock should definitely be called the Sky Dio Pizza Oven
It’s funny, I thought exactly the same thing the first time I saw pics of it!
Mmmmmm Pizza 🍕 🤤
Interesting to see your Zwift VO2 max was so low vs all other platforms. I think this may be a systemic problem – mine was too, and the performances at each category level just aren’t realistic vs those VO2 max thresholds.
Ray,
I know that this is not the right place to put this question, but I do not see another place:
For a few weeks now, my Fenix 5 is no longer recording GPS tracks when running outdoors. It is still measuring distance and pace. But there are no tracks recorded where I ran.
Do you have any idea how this happened? I am using an HRM-pro together with it and activated running power (maybe around that point in time?). Somewhere in the back of my mind I remember some setting for switching the calculation of pace from GPS to steps measured by the sensors in the HRM-pro? Could that be the cause somehow?
But I cannot find it… and it really puzzles me.
Thanks a lot in advance and happy holidays to everybody :-)
Thomas, I would suggest you try posting this on the Garmin user Forum (assuming you don’t have the 5 plus link to forums.garmin.com ). A much broader scope of users who may be able to answer this and help out. Also, you would see very quickly if this was unique to you or an issue impacting a number of users. After that it’s a call to Garmin Support.
Thank you Michael.
I actually did post this to the german Garmin board 2 weeks ago, but did not get any feedback (only some views). I’ll try the “global” version.
Honestly speaking I was just hoping if anybody knows, then Ray ;-)
Yeah, to me it sounds like GPS isn’t turning on at all somehow. Any chance you’ve manually set the Outdoor Run profile to the GPS being off? Also, if you try any other sport profile (hike/walk/bike/anything), and simply do a quick 60 seconds test – even if just standing still, does it plot some sort of map?
Failing that, I’d do a soft reset of the unit, to see if that makes it good.
Thanks Ray!
GPS is turned on in the sports profile and it does get a fix. I also looked at the GPS test in the service menu and it seemed to work (at least, after some time it started showing some numbers).
I definitely have to check a different sports profile. Will do that next. And then a soft reset…
I am pretty confident that there are still enough Fenix 5 users out there for a shit storm if that would be some kind of bug in a recent firmware update. Must be something with my watch…
I tested hiking and that works, it’s recording a track.
I’ll go through the settings of both acitivities line by line and compare.
I’ll uninstall the running power data fields and try again.
Then I’ll do a soft reset.
Alright, I did not expect that, but: Removing the Running Power data fields from the running profile did do the trick.
I did not see that coming (mostly because so many people are using those fields without issues).
Any explanation for that?
I decided orange was cool a couple of years ago, a long time before Apple did, and have the orange band on my Epix.
That’s true, the old Fenix orange band from a few years ago was great. Or, maybe it was reddish? I’m too lazy to walk down the hall and look in the bin.
Thanks for being a DCR Supporter!
All of the Zwift health metrics look very dubious to me – maybe it’s just building up the data though. For example, as well as showing my FTP as 37.7 (should be about 50), it’s also showing my FTP as 184w (4DP gives me 232) – even though the power curve just for my easy/moderate effort Zwift ride yesterday shows me holding higher than that for 60 mins.
Yeah, I’m sure somewhere there are some details on how/why it works exactly. But it doesn’t seem to pass the sniff test on VO2max. Glad to see I’m not the only one.
Thanks for being a Supporter, Neil!
If you go to the Zwift forums you’ll find a pretty lengthy topic all about this. Essentially zFTP does not equal the traditional idea of FTP as they’re using different data to calculate it. A number of users are suggesting they use a different term to avoid confusion but Zwift seems to want to keep using it.
I suppose that gets back to the reality that even Dr. Coggan, the self-proclaimed inventor of FTP, can’t actually define *exactly* that it is. Originally, it was max power for an hour, but he’s since modified it to be “roughly an hour”, without defining exactly how rough an hour actually is.
Another thing to mention would be what Outside (the company) is doing to the CyclingTips. There are a couple of threads in the forum: link to forum.cyclingtips.com then there is an emerging podcast of the former crew.

Ray, regarding your mention of Polar’s study the week prior showing Polar’s H10 was verified for ECG usage (only non-sport usage was studied for specifically “the evaluation of baseline rhythm, atrial fibrillation and premature contractions”) what is your opinion of the Apple watch usage for ECG usage. I’ve come to realize that this feature is useless for picking up Afib vs PVC’s only after paying close to $3,000 in medical bills for tests and in holter monitor evaluations. I think their disclaimer should be more direct and not just stating it never checks for heart attacks. Just my two cents worth.
Yeah, that’s a bit outside of my area of expertise. That said, there is FDA certification on the feature, and it does have to pass very specific levels. Albeit, the testing pool can very from company to company.
I have to go back and look-up Apple’s testing pool numbers/application. It was all done under a secret shell company.
Leg recovery test sounds pretty nifty. When can we get this on Garmin?
