Have some fun in the travel section.
I travel a fair bit, both for work and for fun. Here’s a bunch of random trip reports and daily trip-logs that I’ve put together and posted. I’ve sorted it all by world geography, in an attempt to make it easy to figure out where I’ve been.
My Photography Gear: The Cameras/Drones/Action Cams I Use Daily
The most common question I receive outside of the “what’s the best GPS watch for me” variant, are photography-esq based. So in efforts to combat the amount of emails I need to sort through on a daily basis, I’ve complied this “My Photography Gear” post for your curious minds (including drones & action cams!)! It’s a nice break from the day-to-day sports-tech talk, and I hope you get something out of it!
The Swim/Bike/Run Gear I Use List
Many readers stumble into my website in search of information on the latest and greatest sports tech products. But at the end of the day, you might just be wondering “What does Ray use when not testing new products?”. So here is the most up to date list of products I like and fit the bill for me and my training needs best! DC Rainmaker 2023 swim, bike, run, and general gear list. But wait, are you a female and feel like these things might not apply to you? If that’s the case (but certainly not saying my choices aren’t good for women), and you just want to see a different gear junkies “picks”, check out The Girl’s Gear Guide too.
Hi Ray,
I noticed the subscription for the new Peloton device (if you don’t already have a membership) is 12.99 but the big and overlooked news is that single payment “provides access for up to 5 people in the household to Peloton’s expansive content library”.
So it is cheaper than the app if you have a busy house.
Good catch. Though it’s odd, because it says that you can upgrade your existing Digital App membership for “no fees”, yet, everything I see on the existing app is still limited to a single user. Huh.
To me it sounds like:
the ‘Guide Membership’ might just be strength classes only x 5 users
The ‘Digital Membership’ same as now, 1 user only, but maybe strength classes with the Guide for x 5
The ‘All Access Membership’ same as now, including use of the Guide x 20 users (I think is the new limit on the All Access)
To be honest, I’m now doubting this. It’s a wait and see.
I’s be interested to know how well the Vertex 1 works with the new maps, as that’s a lot more data. Do you have any feel for how smoothly it works? I mean just because a device can run something doesn’t mean it should :-)
Something seems wonky with you Coros 4GB comment; they split Asia into 4 regions but one of them the topo map is listed at 5.36GB. Why would they bother to split a continent but then make one of the regions too large to download? Same with Africa & N America-2, they are both over 4GB.
During the beta there’s slightly different steps to deal with the 4GB limitation. I skipped them for here for the moment, since beta users get those instructions separately (and the steps are a bit technical).
They’re saying some sort of desktop app will be available for easier download upon public release. I’ll update this post with those details once it ships.
Another Tidbit – it appears that Wahoo had Powerlink units at Rouleur bike show the other week. The Bikeradar.com article doesn’t seem to suggest they were usable but has some packaging shots and info:
+/- 1% accuracy
stack 3mm up vs regular pedals.
Zero only (so apparently no aero).
75 hours rechargeable battery via a double charger headed cable.
:)
That Rollr looks more interesting than I expected. Never considered “smart” rollers were possible. Huge potential convenience to avoid the direct drive trainer mounting process. Though maybe that’s a wash since most would require a dedicated trainer tire anyway.
Speedplays a no-go for me. Could never get the cleat “back” enough to center ball of foot over the pedal spindle. Wonder if Wahoo can solve adjustability.
Inside Ride and Elite have both had smart rollers for ages. And the accuracy has been a challenge for both for ages as well, based on the reviews. Personally, rollers are stimulating enough for a ride that I don’t need the smart aspect, and just ride off my PM.
Hahaha – I think we know what a know Ray smiley means… #embargo
Polar se queda muy muy atrás. No ciclocomputadores, no pantalla 1,3 no mapas ,no más de 4 datos por pantalla……
Ray & the Girl, why not start a separate website for the “Girl” focusing on home fitness equipment? Outside your scope Ray? Just a tought 😉
Haha, I think at the moment one website is enough on our plates!
Big kudos to COROS. Their policy of updating old models is great and it is amazing that they do it even for such big changes. Honestly, I see that also as a big step towards sustainability because people will be more willing to keep their older watches. My next watch will be Coros for that reason.
I don’t even want to compare that with Garmin that abandoned FR645 pretty quickly and didn’t add almost any updates after release (and I’m talking about simple stuff where it would be just a matter of copy-paste from FR245, the hardware is definitely strong enough). Forcing people to buy new HW just for a few new SW gimmicks seems absurd. (but might get you more sold watches, at least short term)
Quick one – the transfer of maps to Coros – is it through the download manager/SW by Coros or is it like “file” to USB mass storage drive? IF the second option, Coros will not please guys with enterprise managed devices as they cannot upload anything to USB unless it is encrypted.
