Have some fun in the travel section.
I travel a fair bit, both for work and for fun. Here’s a bunch of random trip reports and daily trip-logs that I’ve put together and posted. I’ve sorted it all by world geography, in an attempt to make it easy to figure out where I’ve been.
My Photography Gear: The Cameras/Drones/Action Cams I Use Daily
The most common question I receive outside of the “what’s the best GPS watch for me” variant, are photography-esq based. So in efforts to combat the amount of emails I need to sort through on a daily basis, I’ve complied this “My Photography Gear” post for your curious minds (including drones & action cams!)! It’s a nice break from the day-to-day sports-tech talk, and I hope you get something out of it!
The Swim/Bike/Run Gear I Use List
Many readers stumble into my website in search of information on the latest and greatest sports tech products. But at the end of the day, you might just be wondering “What does Ray use when not testing new products?”. So here is the most up to date list of products I like and fit the bill for me and my training needs best! DC Rainmaker 2023 swim, bike, run, and general gear list. But wait, are you a female and feel like these things might not apply to you? If that’s the case (but certainly not saying my choices aren’t good for women), and you just want to see a different gear junkies “picks”, check out The Girl’s Gear Guide too.
Wind Tunnel testing at the next DCR open house… I am tempted… Ray, how can I subscribe for 10 more times :-)
You also need to find 13 351 friends.
If he would really do wind tunnel tests and some kind of q&a tests I would be in too
Would really fill out a Tacx Magnum install nicely.
The fans-in-the-back configuration of wind tunnels is not only to ensure laminar flow on the object under test, but also to ensure flow and pressure distribution is equal across the test area (so no “fast” spots, no ‘low pressure” spots), and to prevent flow rotation, which creates zones with varying yaw angles. Controlled flow and pressure distribution is impossible to maintain in what is essentially an open environment in this case. Add a bunch of round fans trying to feed a rectangular unbound test area, and flow and pressure maps will be all over the place. Add flow rotation from the fans (no stator setup will eliminate that at all airspeeds), and you have something that can certainly tell if a tuck in a skinsuit is better than a relaxed position in shorts and t-shirt, but not much further than that. At that price, how many real wind tunnel sessions can one afford?
“flow and pressure maps will be all over the place”
A bit like outdoor air actually :)
I tested it ans it turned out to be sensitive enough to catch difference between rotating and static legs @ 15km/h airspeed. Something I have never been able to check with Notio!
Below last pic sentence “uptake” instead of update, maybe?
Pretty interesting, I think companies that are “too small” to either rent out or build a proper wind-tunnel, probably have some form of “DIY” wind system for basic testing, and aren’t going to be spending the extra for this, and those that are big enough to have the cash to purchase this option, likely just rent space at a “proper” wind tunnel (I don’t know the rental rates, but 75k-225k is probably a LOT of hours on a traditional facility, you may have an idea of the reality of that thought).
But I’m sure there is some segment of “tweeners” for those 2 options, that would like this (or have a LOT of products to test, where the rental time would be too much cost or hassle). Should be interesting to see!
A little generous with their tag line “a wind tunnel for everyone”
Totally unrelated… Did you write something about the Gatorade sweat patch that I might have missed? Saw something a few weeks ago on IG stories I think…
No, I haven’t written anything yet. Still need to write something about it.
I would think that keeping this thing in calibration might be a hard task for many and it must be a set distance apart from fans to plate.
You would need to keep the wind speed perfectly calibrated at all time which for a unit with 3 fans must be a little tricky for a general person. You will also need to keep the balance (force metre) really well calibrated as well. You would also need to keep your wind metre in calibration.
Otherwise i guess you could use a test subject of known aerodynamic and weight properties to test and the software can adjust the raw calibration from that.
Outside of a well equipped lab this might prove long term to keep calibrated.
How do you adjust for items of different length. Like a longer / bigger bike or whatever you are testing. Does the final position of the person or item relative to the fans adjust the result.
Take this down to the F1 for some proper testing. 😁
I suppose it would make riding a trainer a) more realistic with wind blowing in your face and pretty where everywhere else, and b) less sweat on the trainer mat. I suppose they need an ANT profile for control though. Alas, I don’t have space in my basement for one. :-(
I think the Wahoo Headwind is already quite expensive – this would be truly a very very premium fan for indoor riding 😃
Looking forward
Seems like you need a wind tunnel to calibrate it?
