Have some fun in the travel section.
I travel a fair bit, both for work and for fun. Here’s a bunch of random trip reports and daily trip-logs that I’ve put together and posted. I’ve sorted it all by world geography, in an attempt to make it easy to figure out where I’ve been.
My Photography Gear: The Cameras/Drones/Action Cams I Use Daily
The most common question I receive outside of the “what’s the best GPS watch for me” variant, are photography-esq based. So in efforts to combat the amount of emails I need to sort through on a daily basis, I’ve complied this “My Photography Gear” post for your curious minds (including drones & action cams!)! It’s a nice break from the day-to-day sports-tech talk, and I hope you get something out of it!
The Swim/Bike/Run Gear I Use List
Many readers stumble into my website in search of information on the latest and greatest sports tech products. But at the end of the day, you might just be wondering “What does Ray use when not testing new products?”. So here is the most up to date list of products I like and fit the bill for me and my training needs best! DC Rainmaker 2023 swim, bike, run, and general gear list. But wait, are you a female and feel like these things might not apply to you? If that’s the case (but certainly not saying my choices aren’t good for women), and you just want to see a different gear junkies “picks”, check out The Girl’s Gear Guide too.
I’m curious – does the Urban Arrow box have drainage holes or do you have to get the rainwater out manually?
It has a bunch of holes on the bottom (see this picture: link to kidscab.be) and there are also bigger holes on each side where a kid can put their foot to climb in/out of the bike.
Indeed. The metal plate on the bottom is packed with holes, and then the mat you see in that picture acts as another 1cm or so of buffer too (since it’s a mesh thing).Works great! We didn’t have the mat initially a few years back, but then bought it later and love it. Mostly cause it keeps the chain lock (and other random things) from making a racket when tossed in the bottom of the bike.
Enjoy the getaway
I too am loving the Colin Furze tunnel saga!
Indeed! I only recently started watching, with the YouTube algorithm doing its magic, and then have started going back to other random projects. Crazy stuff.
His Ironman suit is bonkers :-) (and serious fun :-) ) But most of what he does is absolutely brilliant fun. :-) – If You haven’t go the Hacksmith industries as well :-)
Wonder what the prize would be at, when he finally decides to move (his shed is getting waay too small for those projects). Nice english “cityhouse” for sale. With some added “bonuses” :-)
We’ve had watch unboxings, trainer unboxings but kid unboxings?
Is the “exasperated side-eye half grin” genetic or was it taught by Mom?
LOL
Though it was rather “in-boxing” than “un-boxing” :)
great post/pics. thanks
Hi DCRainmaker,
i can really “support” your use of that swim bouy! More than once in the summer sailing season I´m a race official at sailing regattas at different lakes in Germany. And i can tell from the last years, that the sailors don’t have much time to look at a small head above the water crossing the lake (and the regatta-course). They are occupied with the wind, the sails and the other 50 to 100 sailboats on the course. More than once we had to pick up swimmers before they reach the sailing area….
Thanks for your work
Christoph
Clearly you’d be the expert on reference GPS devices on buoys over me, but I found my buoy strap at times close enough to the water that I worry my device would flip into it (or be submerged at times).
I ended up settling on starting my recording before packing the buoy then putting the reference device inside the buoy on top of my sandals or other gear. I figure it sort of guaranteed it had line of sight to the sky (although through a piece of vinyl).
One clear downside is that my recording is minutes longer on both ends, but I usually crop it with fitfiletools and all is right with the world :)
Glad to see your 945LTE data looking mostly sorted, hope when the next public beta (or prod) gets pushed we all see similar results (vs strange Strava discrepencies).
Teasing us with your Suunto 9 testing….. ;)
Ray, do you notice difference when wearing watches on the left vs. the right wrist? I’ve been using the S9P now for three weeks. Both during swim, bike, run and tri exercises and races. I see that the swimming accuracy is quite OK compared with my buddies 945s anf Fenix 6’s. It’s almost depending on the day which watch is most accurate.
Always great reviews I have difficulty swimming with Garmin, its great watch but in swimming not its strength I used the fenixs the new fourners 945 it always give me extreme distance thousand of meters 😅 twice a cross continent. I did use the like Polar , apple, which are more realistic numbers. When you’re going to do full review of the Suunto Peak.
Maybe the « running activity « for your reference GPS track is not the best choice since this activities generally apply the most aggressive filtering algorithm : rapid direction change / low velocity in order to reduce wrist wobbles ,this could explain relative bad accuracy .
In a decade of this, I’ve never seen issues with using the running profile for the swim buoy. I suspect simply the watch slipped underwater on the strap (hence the gap).
A spot of tunnel digging with Colin too on Sunday night then? Can’t wait for the next installment of that.
