Have some fun in the travel section.
I travel a fair bit, both for work and for fun. Here’s a bunch of random trip reports and daily trip-logs that I’ve put together and posted. I’ve sorted it all by world geography, in an attempt to make it easy to figure out where I’ve been.
My Photography Gear: The Cameras/Drones/Action Cams I Use Daily

Have you checked out FATMAP and their integration with Strava?? Very cool…Will basically show you your entire day on mountain in 3D.
Woah, that looks super cool. Gonna give it a go in the morning! Here’s the link for others: link to fatmap.com
Love the iPad app for Fatmap – how did it go?
Does the door negate the waterproofing? I assume the port isn’t that hardened?
Kills waterproofing indeed. But, for me that’s really only an issue in watery locations.
Re: French food and wine…Are you saying the Dutch are lacking?? Granted I do not know about wine but i like Dutch pastry more than French (though good!). This was down in the Maastricht area and in Solvang, CA which is a Dutch “colony” north of Santa Barbra.
Stroopwaffels are on point! :)
Solvang is really Danish influenced instead of Dutch. Either way, a very nice place.
I have been searching on and off for that Ulanzi G8-7 battery door for a while now, but can not find any place that would ship to Belgium (within a realistic timeframe…) :(
I see it on Amazon Germany right now – does that ship to you: link to amzn.to
For me here in the Netherlands, it says it’ll arrive by Friday if ordered by 6AM tomorrow morning.
Thanks a lot, that worked, I ordered immediately two to be sure :D Strange, because just yesterday evening I was looking at Amazon Germany and I could only find sellers that did not deliver to Belgium (which is most of the time not the case with Amazon Germany, so it was strange anyway…)
Ah Bochard and the Pendant ! First went there 33 years ago in 20+ cm of fresh snow and been loving it ever since…and was even there at the same time as you. On Wednesday morning I ran though. Would have been fun to bump into you by accident ;-) I didn’t take my Spark this time around (did some nice Spheres at the top of Bochard two years ago) but I did see a couple of guys filming stuff with a Mavic Pro on the Monday I think, they also had a GoPro on a tripod. I made some pretty cool videos with the Insta360 Go. It’s such a light camera and easy to activate with a single press. And yes Garmin’s ski activity tracking on the slopes is nice, even with the FR935. I could do without the “straight lines” on the maps though.
Yeah, I’d love to see them really optimize ski mode. Sorta live the Live Tracking platform (showing location site with basic metrics), it’s one of those things that Garmin kinda did once nearly a decade ago , and mostly haven’t touched or improved it.
Which is too bad, because both things are/were unique to Garmin at the time they launched, and it wouldn’t take significant effort to do things like switching on the ski maps on GCM/GC, or snipping out the straight lines on at least GCM/GC (since they know the pause start/end points).
In any event, yeah – was some great weather for drones. And the greater Chamonix valley has plenty of legal places away from people too, which is nice. Unfortunately, with balancing all the other things, I just didn’t have any time to get mine in the air.
In Garmin Connect, did you try to click the map? For me it did overlay the resort ski map (which comes from Google Maps actually) in all resorts I’ve been to. Chamonix is there too…
There’s no option on GCM (on the mobile) to do anything except the three variants: Map/Hybrid/Satellite
Interesting on full desktop though, will have to poke there!
For me in Map view it overlays the ski resort map. Sometimes it takes a few seconds for the ski overlay to display, but it’s there. I’m using Android
Interesting. On iOS, it just renders Apple Maps there, and waiting doesn’t change anything.
For Android, is it using Google Maps, or Mapbox?
I just tried it on Android and I get the overlay of Run names. Im using Google Maps
It uses Google Maps on Android
Hey Ray. On Android, the Connect App users Google Maps.
I like that posts like this are mostly for your personal archive. And I love the looks of joy on your kids faces, that’s how I feel skiing two!
44mph! thats fast
Who needs a selfie handle!??!!
grab a pole mount and leave it on the end of your ski pole (above the basket of course!) – much better aspect and ratio, not to mention crazy drone-like coverage from the chair and when ripping it.

I agree with you using ski harnesses in general does not promote good ski control skills. However, recently when I was at Beaver Creek, a ski instructor sitting by a fire told me the best way to develop ski skills for really young kids. He pointed out that really young kids don’t have cognitive ability to understand turning. He recommended two adults in tandem to assist the kid. One with the harness and the other to ski in front of the kid. They instruct the kid to follow the adult in front who makes nice rhythmic turns. I found this useful when I would take my daughter out on difficult black steep runs when she was around 10. She did much better following my turns as I skied the fall line.
Skiing over the years with various GPS tech has highlighted a couple of things for me:
1. Even a packed day, where you drop the kids with ski school at 08:59 and scream back into pickup at 17:01, and barely pause for your frites and choc-chaude, really don’t score you a huge amount of actual skiing time. Often Strava will only show 90mins of actually ‘travelling downhill on skis’ in the morning and even less in the afternoon. There’s a lot more of queuing, uploading, checking maps, taking snaps etc. than you’d think.
2. Despite feeling like you’ve pack-hauled to the North Pole, you burn far less calories than you’d think. I’m used to Strava giving me 3000+ calories for a day out on the bike – but I’m lucky to get 350 for a days skiing. Worth bearing in mind when adding the word ‘Savoyade’ to any dis on a menu doubles the calories..
I would have expected some real ski gadgets, like this ski trainer (how to improve your skiing skills):

Hey Ray, another Ray from DC area here. I taught both of my kids to ski using this harness that goes to the boots rather than to their ankles. Does not affect their balance. Ankle harness plus an edgie wedgie to connect the tips works great.
