Have some fun in the travel section.
I travel a fair bit, both for work and for fun. Here’s a bunch of random trip reports and daily trip-logs that I’ve put together and posted. I’ve sorted it all by world geography, in an attempt to make it easy to figure out where I’ve been.
My Photography Gear: The Cameras/Drones/Action Cams I Use Daily
The most common question I receive outside of the “what’s the best GPS watch for me” variant, are photography-esq based. So in efforts to combat the amount of emails I need to sort through on a daily basis, I’ve complied this “My Photography Gear” post for your curious minds (including drones & action cams!)! It’s a nice break from the day-to-day sports-tech talk, and I hope you get something out of it!
The Swim/Bike/Run Gear I Use List
Many readers stumble into my website in search of information on the latest and greatest sports tech products. But at the end of the day, you might just be wondering “What does Ray use when not testing new products?”. So here is the most up to date list of products I like and fit the bill for me and my training needs best! DC Rainmaker 2023 swim, bike, run, and general gear list. But wait, are you a female and feel like these things might not apply to you? If that’s the case (but certainly not saying my choices aren’t good for women), and you just want to see a different gear junkies “picks”, check out The Girl’s Gear Guide too.
How do the maps look for mtb trails? If Stages is pulling from OSM, they’ll likely be pretty good. I’m less concerned with roads
Then again, I thought the same thing for the maps in GarminConnect. Unfortunately GarminConnect is missing a lot of trails that are present in OSM directly.
Is the Stages Dash also Android based like other (wahoo elemnt, hamerhead, …) ?
Looking at the startup screen and you see mention of a Linux version number. So, I’d guess Linux based.
Interesting, was getting ready to snag a 1030, but this makes me wonder if I should take a closer look at the L50. I’ll keep an eye out for the review, maybe there’ll be details that I can use to compare. Love the data options, but wonder about maps/navigation that Garmin has.
I have the L50 and I find that the mapping/navigation is at least as good as the Garmin Edge 530. I chose that comparison because, like the 530, you can’t do the routing on the L50. However, the navigation works well and the maps are large and easy to read and the navigation works fine for all the preface routes that I have tried. But if you want to type in an address on the unit and get a route it won’t do that.
Not “preface”. Should be “pre made”. Auto correct helping out as usual.
I got my L50 at 20% off ($240). I thought that was a bargain. For $209 you get a huge display. The display is In landscape mode, which I feel is much more usable. The display itself is incredibly bright. Looks like a laptop display.
I have been able to use the unit with just a few minor complaints since firmware 1.1.1. I have ridden version 2.0 and have no more complaints.
Support for Varia was the last item that I really needed. On December 3 that gap will be closed.
Jim at stages responds on here frequently. They have a list of new features planned.
I am very very happy with my stages L50.
Now if they would just fix that anywhere mount… I wasted money on two of these things (to use the stages with an existing stem-mount for my garmin) and the anywhere mounts are not even close to fit for purpose.
Why not use the included stages mount. It is different than the Garmin but works.
It was win for my daughter as she inherited my Garmin 800 with a mount

I’ve finally purchased my Radar, and I’m really impressed with it!
Unfortunately my old man rides with a Lezyne head unit, and there is nothing on the radar (excuse the pun) for them supporting it, so may well be looking for a new device as well.
Where are you seeing Stages Gen 3 power meters for as low as $244? Cheapest I’ve seen is about $380…would appreciate any tips. Thanks!
Following…
Where can we see a breakdown of all the Firmware Updates? The last one on the Stages site is for Firmware 1.1.2.
