Have some fun in the travel section.
I travel a fair bit, both for work and for fun. Here’s a bunch of random trip reports and daily trip-logs that I’ve put together and posted. I’ve sorted it all by world geography, in an attempt to make it easy to figure out where I’ve been.
My Photography Gear: The Cameras/Drones/Action Cams I Use Daily
The most common question I receive outside of the “what’s the best GPS watch for me” variant, are photography-esq based. So in efforts to combat the amount of emails I need to sort through on a daily basis, I’ve complied this “My Photography Gear” post for your curious minds (including drones & action cams!)! It’s a nice break from the day-to-day sports-tech talk, and I hope you get something out of it!
The Swim/Bike/Run Gear I Use List
Many readers stumble into my website in search of information on the latest and greatest sports tech products. But at the end of the day, you might just be wondering “What does Ray use when not testing new products?”. So here is the most up to date list of products I like and fit the bill for me and my training needs best! DC Rainmaker 2023 swim, bike, run, and general gear list. But wait, are you a female and feel like these things might not apply to you? If that’s the case (but certainly not saying my choices aren’t good for women), and you just want to see a different gear junkies “picks”, check out The Girl’s Gear Guide too.
Strava app drops BLE and ANT+ support this week and no comments!!
Yeah Ray has been conspicuously silent on this issue, really hoped he would chime in with his insight.
You probably saw the newest post but he has talked about it on twitter multiple times.
Yeah been checking this site regularly to see what DC made of it :-(
Yeah, I guess I talked extensively about it on Twitter: link to twitter.com
And back in September: link to twitter.com
And then again last week we talked about it a lot on the FIT File Podcast (Ep 90): link to dcrainmaker.com
I’m not really sure what to say anymore. It’s baffling on so many levels.
Ray, sorry not everyone follows/uses twitter.
You’re right.
I started writing a post for tomorrow (the day it ends). Seems fitting. Plus, its turning out funny as all @#$!.
Ok, ask and you shall receive: link to dcrainmaker.com
Firmware update for Chronos? Mine is now three years old! Looks like SDK3.1 support. No idea what that will do for me but it’s interesting.
That first shot of the bike jump is well timed.
If you’re into FPV have a look at the team blacksheep YT channel: link to youtube.com
They started FPV flying more than 10 years ago with self built flying wings, electronics and antenna’s filming epic long range flights. Now it is all drones. They also have an site with forum and online shop: https://www.team-blacksheep.com
Yeah, they’ve got some incredible footage. I stumbled on their ski jumping video they just posted, yesterday (link to youtube.com). Amazing stuff.
I think what’s cool about it is that the cinematography capabilities are getting so much better than they used to be, primarily because the action cameras are getting so much better – and the drones themselves able to lift that payload as well more easily.
Free version of the MFP diary will only save data for last two years.

While I don’t particularly care about MFP doing this I will care if other companies follow suit?
Any inside news about new firmware to the Garmin Forerunner 945?
The beta Forerunner 945 Beta SW 3.08 has been out for 1 month.
Hope to be able to read Garmin Vivoactive4/Venu review soon ;) I`m holding my purchase until then ;)
Hi Ray,
I cycle and hike.
My edge 830 gives me training load for cycling, but I don’t use it for hiking
What Garmin device do u recommend to capture training load for hiking?
And, how do I get an overall training load on Garmin connect?
Thx.
Jim
Technically you could use it for hiking if you loaded the maps on it, but practically you wouldn’t get that training load. In fact, training load for hiking is a weird thing right now. I’m not sure it handles that correctly right now on the Fenix 6/FR945 type devices. I mean, it might, but there were some quirks this summer I saw on hikes.
In any case, with training load, you’re basically looking at the Fenix 6/FR945. The FR245 can contribute to load though, so there’s that. But it can’t show the load.
The last garmin official release for the fenix 5 had an error in the treadmill calibration such that the distances gets farther off each time its recalibrated. I see in the change note there is a fix for treadmill calibration. Has anyone tried it does it work?
It seems that life in the Fitbit universe might become even more interesting as it seems there are rumors Google is trying to purchase them…
Indeed. I think it’s a good thing. I’m not sure where Fitbit will end otherwise.
I’ve been super interested in the FPV drone stuff as well. Did you see the details that Becki and Chris posted on their youtube channel? Looks difficult to learn but do-able. It’s just making time. There’s just not enough time for all of these cool things that I want to do.
Yeah, that’s what got me thinking about it again. In looking at Chris’s setup, it’s pretty expensive all-in. I’ve done approximately zero research beyond that to see where I could save costs, so I’m sure there’s lots of ways – just all tradeoffs.
Love their stuff, and especially their Newfoundland series, given that’s where The Girl is from. Can’t wait for the next episode to drop.
