Have some fun in the travel section.
I travel a fair bit, both for work and for fun. Here’s a bunch of random trip reports and daily trip-logs that I’ve put together and posted. I’ve sorted it all by world geography, in an attempt to make it easy to figure out where I’ve been.
My Photography Gear: The Cameras/Drones/Action Cams I Use Daily
The most common question I receive outside of the “what’s the best GPS watch for me” variant, are photography-esq based. So in efforts to combat the amount of emails I need to sort through on a daily basis, I’ve complied this “My Photography Gear” post for your curious minds (including drones & action cams!)! It’s a nice break from the day-to-day sports-tech talk, and I hope you get something out of it!
The Swim/Bike/Run Gear I Use List
Many readers stumble into my website in search of information on the latest and greatest sports tech products. But at the end of the day, you might just be wondering “What does Ray use when not testing new products?”. So here is the most up to date list of products I like and fit the bill for me and my training needs best! DC Rainmaker 2023 swim, bike, run, and general gear list. If that’s the case (but certainly not saying my choices aren’t good for women), and you just want to see a different gear junkies “picks”, check out The Girl’s Gear Guide too.
The trail runner maid story is very inspiring, this is one thing for sure is true in sport everyone is equal, I am part of a running group and I have never met so much diversity of different wealth class in there and everybody is equally happy while running!
Interesting no mention of the change to Garmin’s forum software.
We talked about it last week in the Podcast a bit.
Thanks for sharing the news on the bike fees on American Airlines. I have a flight on American this summer and was considering taking a bike so this makes that a bit easier of a decision.
That firstbeat page looks like an absolute goldmine.. Good job my boss is on leave this week!! (and doesn’t read sports tech pages!!).
I think they picked the wrong photo here though – unless you have a twin!!??
Ignore that last bit – I’m being an idiot! ?
Hey there, any thoughts on the Whoop Strap? I know that they advertise paying a lot of attention to HRV and have a friend who swears by it. But I find the lack of Rainmaker reviews suspicious :)
Yeah, with the new V3 version I’m slightly more tempted. My previous issue was always that they basically disallowed any sort of meaningful data export – so doing comparisons was tough.
Now with the just announced V3 they allow pairing as a BLE sensor, so at least I can compare HR. I somewhat hate the subscription model though. Also, I think it looks fugly. But those are more personal things.
I’m getting more and more tempted to pick one up.
Thanks for the reply. Subscriptions don’t bother me (especially from a business perspective), but a closed ecosystem is annoying. I’ll be curious to know what you think if you do pick one up!
Regarding the Edge 520 firmware beta: I’ve never experienced a power spike until the day after I read this article! I did a 50K road ride and the ride summary on my Edge 520 showed a max power of 47,456w. I did some analysis of the FIT file and found that there is a single high value after which the power data is no longer recorded for a few seconds. Then there are some device info blocks for the power meter and then the power data reappears. So, it looks like either the power meter dropped out and reconnected or perhaps crashed, rebooted, and reconnected. Either way, the last power value sent was spurious or corrupt. It seems that the developers at Strava are familiar with the problem as the spurious value is dropped when the data is sent to Strava but it shows up in Garmin Connect.
Anyone notice the change to the Power Tap website? It now directs to SRAM. So SRAM bought Power Tap. Explains why all sales stopped at all seller outlets. All sales moved to PowerTap only. P1 pedal discontinued and no reference to the PowerTap chain ring power meter. SRAM must not want competing products.
