Apple watch is amazing
Great news regarding Spotify and the Forerunner 645!
Ray do you think there is a chance that the F645 or Fenix 5+ will go on sale during Black Friday or Christmas season?
Last year Garmin put the Fenix 5 on sale for the holidays, and that went well for them. I’d be surprised if we don’t see the same happen this year.
Good to know, I’ll wait out a bit longer to upgrade from my F235 then. Thanks Ray!
Well the Apple update bricked my Series 4 watch, and it seems to have been a pretty wide spread problem.
Yeah, I went to update my AW3 after I parked it on the charger for the night and when I checked on my iPhone there was no update. Looks like they pulled it. I just checked and 5.0.1 is still listed as the latest.
I hear you on the orange color for the Coros helmet – but it did not go well with your new DCR kit… black will look much better. Just my 2 cents on this technical component ;)
As my old friend used to say (and it does not apply to you), if you cant be fast, at least look good
That’s what The Girl says too…
Next version of DCR Kit to match orange helmets?
As a mountain biker who rides where hunting is definitely permitted, I always want my kit to be as close to blaze orange as possible.
Yeah, I’d love an orange kit. Just not sure how many takers there would be for one. :-/
+1 on day glow orange helmets. Or a proper EN1150 certified (high viz) vest in that colour that doesn’t triple your CdA.
Anyone know if this is road legal in France? As I believe “regular” headphones are not legal while cycling in that country and riding four days without music would make Paris-Brest-Paris more daunting than just the distance.
Garmin also announced Garmin Pay in the Netherlands.
They work with maestro cards.

Nice! Though, sad panda for me, no ING: link to garmin.com
Hey Ray,
Thanks for pointing out the APAC devices being slow to get this updates, I plan on buying a Vivoactive 3 Music but I’m currently living in Turkey and not sure whether they get the APAC devices or not. To that end, do you know what the model codes correspond to? I can purchase a Vivoactive 3 Music with code 010-01985-04 here in Turkey as opposed to the 010-01985-02 over in the UK. I can’t seem to find out whether those codes differentiate between UK/Europe and APAC. Do you know, or can you point me in the direction of a Garmin source that does?
Many Thanks,
Lee
I don’t know if there’s specific SKU’s (I mean, of course there is, but I don’t know the numbers). However, I believe anytime you plug-in an APAC unit, it actually says ‘APAC’ after it. I’ve never handled one myself, but I think that’s the easiest way to tell.
Looks like software region lock on Apple Watch ECG…
Guilherme Rambo, from 9to5 Mac, has been spelunking through the firmware:
“This limitation is not enforced by hardware, and if you buy an Apple Watch Series 4 in any country, it includes the new sensors. Looking at code within iOS related to the ECG feature, we’ve been able to confirm that its limitation to the US will be based on the software region of the user’s devices (iPhone and Apple Watch).”

What does “software region of the user’s devices” mean?
I had imagined it was keyed upon what country your Apple ID is linked to….
Within the ‘Watch’ iOS app (default Apple Watch control/config/settings app), there’s a region setting there that you can adjust. In my case, I just pretend to be US everything.
Indeed there is, thanks!
Ray, do you see music/Garmin pay coming to the FR935 in the near future? Or would a new FR935 stay away from the ‘smart watch’ features?
Not to the FR935 directly, it doesn’t have the hardware to do it.
But I think any future FR935 successor would certainly have it (or at least be an option, ala the FR645 & FR645 Music).
Historically, region related features on apple products have been locked to the “region” you set your phone to. E.g. the “news” app used to be available to UK/US, and with my phone set to the Netherlands, I couldn’t get it to work. However changing the region made the app appear. Likewise for ApplePay.
I’m wondering whether ECG will be the same, or a little more nuanced due to the actual approval required.
I think the ratings for the helmets will be a great thing to have. It is so hard to go out and buy a helmet without any time of way to really look at the ratings. Like they said, price was not an indicator or performance. Will be nice to see them continue the test with kids helmets as well. Having three boys that are fearless on their bikes and need to keep their heads as safe as possible.
I am very sceptical about the ECG on the apple watch. It will probably work fine technically but the problem is you only have a 1 lead ECG ( aVL or aVR). A one lead ECG is only really useful for detecting rhythm problems ( altough you’d rather have V2 or lead II for that). I just don’t see the benefit over detecting an irregular heart rate through the optical heart rate monitor. If there is something wrong you’d probably end up having a 12 lead ECG or a 24 hour ECG. I’m also wondering what the sensitivity and specificity of this device would be when the device is available( always tricky with a new medical device…) I bet this feature will probably end up with a lot of anxious people and no real benefit… ( and the gimmick factor…)
Wow, wish these helmets were around in 1945….
SafeSound will detect an impact and the LED tail light will begin flashing S.O.S in Morse code for anyone nearby to identify
At least the Fenix 5 plus APAC has been updated with Spotify already.
Let’s hope it comes to the FR645 APAC with roughly the same lag period.
Hi Ray,
Do you know whether Galileo will be available for FR920XT, pls?
My girlfriend has the FR645 and all 3 options (GPS, GPS+Glonass, GPS+Galileo) are available on her device.
… and we do not care much about Spotify… ;-)
My understand is that’s well prior to the 2017+ chipsets that are getting the upgrades. :(
Great news, Ray! But since yesterday I am checking the Connect IQ market and spotify is still not compatible with my forerunner 645 music.
Do you know why?
Assuming you don’t have an APAC version, it means your FR645 isn’t up to date.
For the Coros helmets – can you use Garmin bike computers/watch controls to control the various features/volume, instead of the remote?
Can the Coros connect via bluetooth to Garmin device, which is then connected to your phone?
Not possible with the original COROS, and I doubt it’s possible with the newer ones. You need to use the remote. You can volume control from your phone (I used my Apple Watch to control volume before the left speaker fell out of my COROS and stopped working).
When you have the opportunity to do further testing on the new Coros helmet- I’d like to see how well it works in windy conditions. Wind noise is always my enemy!
Does the 935 now have Spotify too? I’ve noticed in the last week or so my phone is trying to connect to Spotify when it’s connected to my watch.
Nope, no music capabilities on the FR935.
However, it’s possible that the watch is showing Spotify music via the generic music control option.
Hey Ray, which has better sound quality/volume for podcasts and audiobooks – the Coros Safesound or one of their bone conduction helmets like the Omni? Also, have you tried the MFI helmets? If so, how do they compare?
Thanks
I can’t speak for the Safesound, but I have an original Coros. The speaker quality is only good for background music. You don’t want to have anything you want to listen to playing like a podcast or audiobook because wind noise often drowns out the speakers, even at the highest volume. I had hoped to listen to podcasts, but was quickly disabused. The Safesound looks like it’s trying to remedy that problem, but I’ve no idea if it works or not.
