Have some fun in the travel section.
I travel a fair bit, both for work and for fun. Here’s a bunch of random trip reports and daily trip-logs that I’ve put together and posted. I’ve sorted it all by world geography, in an attempt to make it easy to figure out where I’ve been.
My Photography Gear: The Cameras/Drones/Action Cams I Use Daily
The most common question I receive outside of the “what’s the best GPS watch for me” variant, are photography-esq based. So in efforts to combat the amount of emails I need to sort through on a daily basis, I’ve complied this “My Photography Gear” post for your curious minds (including drones & action cams!)! It’s a nice break from the day-to-day sports-tech talk, and I hope you get something out of it!
The Swim/Bike/Run Gear I Use List
Many readers stumble into my website in search of information on the latest and greatest sports tech products. But at the end of the day, you might just be wondering “What does Ray use when not testing new products?”. So here is the most up to date list of products I like and fit the bill for me and my training needs best! DC Rainmaker 2023 swim, bike, run, and general gear list. But wait, are you a female and feel like these things might not apply to you? If that’s the case (but certainly not saying my choices aren’t good for women), and you just want to see a different gear junkies “picks”, check out The Girl’s Gear Guide too.
Talking about offroad biking. Do you have any plans to compete in Cyclocross just for fun? There are some low entry competitions in Belgium and the Netherlands.
I wouldn’t be opposed to getting into it. :)
But first, I’d probably need to get…another bike. :)
As long as you haven’t reached the theoretical of n+1 bikes…
I suggest a cheaper and low-tech version of a wind tunnel: anywhere on the coast of Friesland :-D
I value Ray’s fitness and bike skills pretty high, but don’t think he is quite ready for that yet ;-)
Nice work if you can get it :-) I went to work in the rain and sat in the office with people who I wouldn’t hang around with if paid to!
I would be interested in knowing why you are considering moving over from Nikon – which from your blog post
My Photography Gear is what you use as a DSLR – over to Panasonic. Looking at the comparison from DxOMark – link to bit.ly – the Nikon should be a better camera, but I guess there are other considerations? Thinking myself about what to choose, and whether to switch from my old Nikon D3000 to another brand.
Ola
I’m sure Ray won’t be giving up the D850 any time soon. It’s a great stills camera. The GH5 & GH5S are great video cams. Horses for courses.
My current D500 is solid, but for video it’s a pain in the ass. I love it for photos, and still prefer it for photos over the GH5.
Mainly on video there’s two core challenges:
A) The D500 doesn’t have continual auto-focus. So since I do most of my own shooting, I have to ensure that it’s perfectly in focus when I start a shot (such as on a tripod), and then I can’t change my positioning mid-shot, or it goes out of focus.
B) It can’t do 4K/60. While I don’t upload in 4K/60 (I upload in 4K/30), Using b-roll from 4K/60 allows me to slow it down to 4K/30 and essentially act like a poor-mans gimbal for close-up watch shots where I want a tiny bit of movement (and don’t want to bring a gimbal).
Random tidbit: If you checkout my Polar Vantage video from last week, the video portions showing me talking were shot in Amsterdam using the Nikon D500. Whereas all the b-roll (except roughly the first 60s of video) were shot with the GH5s hand-held at 4K/60FPS and then slowed down to 30FPS.
@Ola don’t forget that Ray was shooting with Canon before he switched to Nikon. So making a move to another brand is not a strange thing for him.
You just refuse to make the number of the noun and verb agree.
Do you even know you are not doing that?
I hope it is just laziness, not ignorance.
It is what really separates the men from the others.
Yeah, we know, you’ve already posted this on other pages. you can stop being a serial d-bag now.
If you’ve got time, South Lake Tahoe and Desolation Wilderness is more awesome than Donner :D

You won’t see that, but last time I went there was a ton of snow above 5000′ 4th of July weekend.
That does look awesome. I wish I had weeks around here!
Since you spent some time with Specialized, did you see this article over on NPR about counterfeit helmets?

Interesting. Hadn’t seen that one. A good ‘Week in Review’ type link.
Wow, scenery in your hike pictures looks epic. Weather is nice too…
Any plans to look at muscle oxygen sensors and go see booth 2473 where humon is? Moxy is at 2770 if you want to compare the 2 muscle oxygen sensors, so grouped together in that one corner. (Figured if I did the looking up if their location you’d be more likely to go see them)
Hmm, Humon is at 2375 going by their twitter feed
I was right the first time….. (Humon is at 2473)
Moxy is releasing an updated sensor so be good to compare the two. (They also still seem to be running the BSX tradein so if you have a BSX device you get $150 off) link to my.moxymonitor.com
Hi Ray, and welcome to my backyard (I’ve only been in Reno less than a year after a lifetime in Florida, but it already feels like home). I am not sure how I didn’t catch you at Northstar, as I was there Sunday at Canyon too demo-ing their new(ish) Grail gravel bike.
I loved that Northstar drove everyone away too, because on Saturday I did a ride on Peavine back in Reno, which was empty and gorgeous. We got to see some deer including a massive buck a little ways up.
I hope you have fun while you’re here. Are you doing any other rides/events besides the show?
Looking at the pictures maybe this is a good place to ask. Any thoughts or ideas regarding power meters for mountain bikes? I have been using a PowerCal for a few years but it might be time to get something more accurate if something exists.
Thanks!
I agree that the outdoor locations for Interbike here in Vegas weren’t the best (though hardcore offroadies would argue that Bootleg Canyon ranks as a destination ride, so I’m told). We will miss the Cross Vegas but not much else. Interbike was already replaced by NASCAR as the money show here this month, so not missed by the money changers, I suspect.
It is beautiful up in Reno/Tahoe area so you will enjoy going there. Welcome back to the States, Ray. Def bring the girls to visit next year.
Dennis
Nice. I was able to stay at one of the homes at Northstar several weeks ago but it is nice and certainly MTB country. Wanted to post to tell people that it’s Lake Donner and the Truckee area that’s the bomb. I was able to get three nice loops in on the roads. Lake Tahoe – I did this so you don’t have to, King’s Beach-Squaw Valley-Truckee- back to KB, and Truckee over Donner Pass down to Cisco Grove and back. Last two worth it if you are in that area. All with various DC Rainmaker recommended devices.
Looking forward to the Apple Watch 4 review.
