Have some fun in the travel section.
I travel a fair bit, both for work and for fun. Here’s a bunch of random trip reports and daily trip-logs that I’ve put together and posted. I’ve sorted it all by world geography, in an attempt to make it easy to figure out where I’ve been.
My Photography Gear: The Cameras/Drones/Action Cams I Use Daily
The most common question I receive outside of the “what’s the best GPS watch for me” variant, are photography-esq based. So in efforts to combat the amount of emails I need to sort through on a daily basis, I’ve complied this “My Photography Gear” post for your curious minds (including drones & action cams!)! It’s a nice break from the day-to-day sports-tech talk, and I hope you get something out of it!
The Swim/Bike/Run Gear I Use List
Many readers stumble into my website in search of information on the latest and greatest sports tech products. But at the end of the day, you might just be wondering “What does Ray use when not testing new products?”. So here is the most up to date list of products I like and fit the bill for me and my training needs best! DC Rainmaker 2023 swim, bike, run, and general gear list. But wait, are you a female and feel like these things might not apply to you? If that’s the case (but certainly not saying my choices aren’t good for women), and you just want to see a different gear junkies “picks”, check out The Girl’s Gear Guide too.
The Outside article raises some valid points but is trying waaaaay too hard to add 2+2 to get about 7. Raising concerns about a lift built in the 50’s whilst in the same sentence noting it has been extensively refurbished in that time is pretty dumb. And using the *brand spanking newly built* Titanic disaster as a comparison in an article about the risks of ancient machinery suffering fatigue failures is just bad journalism altogether!
Sadly UK customers not quite so lucky on the deals! Clever Training UK still at £389.99, or $475.
Oh well, I guess this is the price we pay for living in the UK (oh, and not having Donald trump in politics!)
Was just about to comment on this too.. :(
You will see some UK/EUR deals around Black Friday from Clever Training, just not today.
Unfortunately, deals for Garmin specifically are handled on a country/region basis. So in this case, Garmin makes it possible for CT to discount to these prices from an economic standpoint.
On Clevertraining the Blue-Black with HRM Run is $250.
If I add it to cart and calculate shipping costs to the netherlands, it results in $30 shipping costs. The total of $280 dollar (approx 250 eur) is still way cheaper than any shop in europe.
or am I missing something?
920XT that is….
Note that import/VAT costs aren’t calculated.
ah, I mailed (and hoped) them already if these were included.
Tnx for explaining
Hello Ray
Could you be more specific on those deals in EU?
Now the savings on FR920XT are -56%. I calculated that the tax/customs/VAT (Belgium and Europe?) would cost me +56,80 euro or +32%: so it is still a great deal (-24%).

Thanks for answering.

They’re still being finalized/negotiated/argued/fought (it’s far less easy than how the US side operates).
I don’t expect them to be as good of deal as this one though (though, I could be wrong).
You mock our politics, after having voted for Brexit?
Ray, the 920 bundle seems to be as low as 299 on amazon. If Garmin would add in audio alerts I’d be a buyer but for some reason this device is neglected from this feature.
Bundle meaning tri bundle
I saw that very nice price, to bad for me it’s only for the US and not available at the Europe versions of Amazon.
The lower Amazon prices should pop back up in the next 24 hours or so, essentially everyone ran out of stock.
You won’t see this specific sale non-US, since Garmin isn’t making the economics of that work for non-US retailers.
Audio prompts, on the 920, ever?
Not sure there, I’d tend to doubt it at this point.
Such a shame, seems it would be a simple feature to add
This specific sale is up on Amazon.ca too.
Something of note this week is that Brim Brothers won’t deliver their power meter and all backers lost their money there. Sad, since I thought their product was really promising.
As mentioned above, that’s discussed in the DCR Podcast.
Great it has to be mentioned in the only part of the post I skip ;~) Thanks for the heads up

Sorry a bit of a left field question with regards your post but wanting to upgrade my bike and was wondering if you had any hunches as to when Garmin will? launch a podless Vector. Racking my brain to see where Garmin are in the Vector update cycle but having a Homer Simpson moment.
Cheers
Not quite sure, though I wouldn’t expect anything near-term. Typically we don’t see new power meter announcements now until spring (i.e. March/April).
O.K thanks.
Ray,
Do you think the discounted prices for the 920XT’s signal the potential arivial of a 930 XT replacement model ? And if so will this occur before Christmas or more likely at CES in 2017 ? Thanks for any info.. just trying to get my “Dear Santa” letter written : )
.
Thanks for the video about the bottle openers.
I never imagined it could be so fascinating – and hilarious. Nice find.
re: DIY bottle openers.
Guy sure does like shitty beer. Goose Island looked to be the only one worth drinking.
Hi Ray,
I know that the fenix 3 and XT920 are about the same (-navigation; +quick release etc.) but I like the looks of the fenix much more. Do you expect similar sales for the fenix 3 or should I go with an XT920 right now?
I would bet you see a <$299 Fenix 3 near Black Friday.
Also the F3 also has a quick release kit available for the non-HR version; I’m not sure about the one with the HR sensor though.
Can you expand on “Note that while the FR920XT is overdue for replacement, I don’t see that as being near-term.”? Seems like the fenix and 920 are going to be replaced around CES time frame based on rumors and would help continue garmin’s push to the new connectIQ version
Hi Ray,
Do you know if there is differences between US and European version of the 920XT ?
thanks
None, except the tiny certification logo on the outside of the box.
Ok- with the significant drop in the 920, is there rumor of a new watch coming in the next 6 months?
