Have some fun in the travel section.
I travel a fair bit, both for work and for fun. Here’s a bunch of random trip reports and daily trip-logs that I’ve put together and posted. I’ve sorted it all by world geography, in an attempt to make it easy to figure out where I’ve been.
My Photography Gear: The Cameras/Drones/Action Cams I Use Daily
The most common question I receive outside of the “what’s the best GPS watch for me” variant, are photography-esq based. So in efforts to combat the amount of emails I need to sort through on a daily basis, I’ve complied this “My Photography Gear” post for your curious minds (including drones & action cams!)! It’s a nice break from the day-to-day sports-tech talk, and I hope you get something out of it!
The Swim/Bike/Run Gear I Use List
Many readers stumble into my website in search of information on the latest and greatest sports tech products. So here is the most up to date list of products I like and fit the bill for me and my training needs best! DC Rainmaker 2023 swim, bike, run, and general gear list. I think you mean a garmin tri watch announcement soon (930/F4)….. ;)
Between this and his post on the Garmin forums, it’s been pretty well hinted that a new Garmin tri watch is incoming imminently.
Stellar view from the hotel, care to pitch the name?
Keep up the good work!
Cheers,
Patrick
Hi Ray
Would it be possible to post a link to the hotel that you stayed at?
I am going to take a guess on this one based on the photos.
Is it link to tripadvisor.co.uk by any chance?
Close, this one here: link to tripadvisor.co.uk
The super short review of the hotel would be:
1) Beautiful locale
2) Recently renovated building internally. Nothing fancy, simplistic – but functional.
3) Food is…ummm…typical mass-buffet style, largely catering to a British crowd. Poor attempts at locale/Spanish food. Half-board (Breakfast/Dinner) is inclusive, full board coast 15EUR extra per day per person, and then includes drinks. We didn’t bother for that, and just ate lunch in town at half that price per person per day. Breakfast was better than dinner…by a lot.
4) Staff are incredibly friendly.
5) You can pay 8EUR per day to upgrade from the base room to the view room we had. Which is what we did.
6) They had tons of kids activities (like a crazy amount), but she’s still far too small for that.
7) The Girl had to throw down at check-in when they tried to tell us that because they overbooked they were sending us down the hill to the hotel you linked too (which is lower rated) without any cost difference. As noted, The Girl kicked the manager in the balls and he magically found us a spot. I think they thought they’d pull one over on us, but…umm…no. Beyond that one guy, all staff were great.
8) The pool is fine, but crowded. Go to the beach, as there’s a path connecting it from the hotel.
9) Entertainment is available nightly, appears to be from the 1980’s. They must lock it in a closet each night.
10) They charge 10EUR deposit for beach towels (each, and they’re skimpy ones too), and their batshit crazy about them. Guard them with your life.
11) They have peach gummy rings at the front desk in a huge bowl.. Solid addition, and free.
So thats the one slightly farther round?
We stayed at the one down at the bottom where they had the interminable childrens entertainment every night (Mind you, the kids absolutely loved it)
Absolutely loved the bay, the beach and the general area. There also looked to be some marvellous places for running and cycling.
Yup, the one in the upper left of your photo. It has another half/side to it, out of view in that photo, as it wraps around the corner.
One round and one square from Garmin by the look of it. I hope they are the ones we all think they are that you knew nothing about recently!
The Fenix 3 is still excellent so if they can improve upon that we’ll all be very happy campers.
Still looking forward to the new big Polar too but will be surprised if that’s in the next couple of weeks!
Is the Fenix 3 really excellent? Did Garmin solve the problems with the GPS signal with firmware updates?
No, but everyone else has also released devices with poor GPS so it’s no longer worse than the competition. Gotta love progress :)
that bay looks insanely amazing – thanks for sharing
Welcome to Ibiza ;)
To improve the F3 /HR it only needs to shed 10-15 grams, add tracking of your mates and get that Gps sorted. Then it’s bang on
What running backpack do you use? 5 million options, any recommendations?
Good to hear your positive feedback on the Marlin – I also backed it and think it’s going to be a great training product.
Great read, as always.
How did you get the underwater swim shot in the bay?
I just attached the GoPro to a smaller GorillaPod*, and then set it on the seafloor in video mode. Then swam in front of/over it. Sometimes if I want really clear quality, I’ll use photo mode in timelapse mode instead, but that lessens the chance of getting the right shot. So I went lazy with video mode and taking a screenshot later on the computer.

Amazing – thank you.
Re travel with a newborn, once you think that this is going easier than you thought it was gonna be – from then on there won’t be easy travelling with kids anymore (until they reach iPad maturity maybe). That nugget will soon have a voice and a will! But seriously, you can easily spot first time parents by them trying too hard to not let the baby affect their previous lifestyle and that’s an uphill battle most parents will eventually lose. Of course you’ll likely only realize this once number two got born and then ask yourself why you were doing that much with number one when she was only 6 weeks old. Don’t get tricked by an easy trip ;-)
I second that!
First few months were easy for travelling. Now my daughter is 10 months and screams her head off if we drive for more than 30mins! Recently an easy 4 hour drive over the alps turned into 8 hours with 7 stops! Anyway, you’ll survive and forget it quickly.
Enjoy coming to Friedrichshafen, if you want to sneak out of EB for a swim in the lake let me know!
Ibiza without going clubbing at least once?
no Space?
no BoraBora?
no losing oneself at DC10?
no Amnesia?
püh :)
Your daughter is a cutie, looks like she enjoys the vacation.
That area looks wonderful! Thanks for sharing.
Rumor has it that The Girl will be posting reviews of foot-based HRMs and WRD (Wetness Retention Devices)! Keen to see those for use with my baby girl.
Aww, too cute baby pictures , thanks Ray!
I’m looking forward to your review of the Suunto Spartan. I’m curious to know if it can be used on a treadmill since it doesn’t have a footpod.
