Have some fun in the travel section.
I travel a fair bit, both for work and for fun. Here’s a bunch of random trip reports and daily trip-logs that I’ve put together and posted. I’ve sorted it all by world geography, in an attempt to make it easy to figure out where I’ve been.
My Photography Gear: The Cameras/Drones/Action Cams I Use Daily
The most common question I receive outside of the “what’s the best GPS watch for me” variant, are photography-esq based. So in efforts to combat the amount of emails I need to sort through on a daily basis, I’ve complied this “My Photography Gear” post for your curious minds (including drones & action cams!)! It’s a nice break from the day-to-day sports-tech talk, and I hope you get something out of it!
The Swim/Bike/Run Gear I Use List
Many readers stumble into my website in search of information on the latest and greatest sports tech products. But at the end of the day, you might just be wondering “What does Ray use when not testing new products?”. So here is the most up to date list of products I like and fit the bill for me and my training needs best! DC Rainmaker 2023 swim, bike, run, and general gear list. But wait, are you a female and feel like these things might not apply to you? If that’s the case (but certainly not saying my choices aren’t good for women), and you just want to see a different gear junkies “picks”, check out The Girl’s Gear Guide too.
Hey, I looked at the video on youtube. I was able to adjust the view by tilting my phone in multiple directions, and then I could also turn the picture completely around by swiping the screen till I was facing forward. Definitely gives a more interactive feeling to videos. Imagine Ken Block’s Gymkana videos with that level of viewer decision making. Pretty cool.
those hot chocolates look incredible. ive never seen a gopro on a ski before! pretty crazy
I need to book a snowboard trip to make some of those really cool maps. What a great idea.
Hi Ray,
This might also be interesting for you… They can print a 3D sculpture of you activities track on a map.
http://www.nicetrails.com
Looks pretty cool!
Rob
Woah, that’s pretty darn cool. Love the concept.
This is what it would have looked like if Fluri was running during Ray’s ski day: link to gph.is
Agree those 3D printed trails are really cool.
Very nice. What’s the typical battery drain profile look like for something as long as this having GPS enabled?
It will last all day as long as you don’t leave your phone outside your pocket and let it get really cold. We took lessons from Strava and aggressively limit GPS and other sensor use to the minimum required to get accurate stats. The result is way less battery drain than the older apps that scared people off tracking skiing with their phones.
I took a look at the Fluri website, looks promising.
The website mentions “40 resorts across the US and Canada”, are there any plans to also cover European ski resorts?
And as far as I can see, this is available for the iPhone only, will this be made available for Android as well?
If The European Commission pushes trough with free data roaming within Europe this indeed will be perfect for finding friends and family back on the slopes (which can be very time consuming without such a tool).
Fluri was iPhone-only this season but Android version will be available for 16/17 season. There are currently a couple of European resorts in the app – Paradiski/La Plagne/Les Arcs and Zillertal Arena – and more will be added for next season. If you’re on iPhone and you’ll be skiing Europe this month, let us know where you’re going and we can get the map loaded for you.
Thank you Jay for the clear replies.
I look forward to test and use the app next season (on my android phone in Europe).
I also read your answer wrt loging in to the app, currently only trough Facebook. Is a login trough a Google account also planned?
Good luck with this undertaking!
Google account login would be great but it’s not currently in the road map. We’re still a small team and have to focus on just the highest-priority items for now – email/password signup, getting it up and running on Android, etc.
Thank you once more for the time to come here and answer or questions.
Fair enough, indeed an android version and regular login with password would be enough to start (me) going.
Keep up the good work..
Ray, thanks for the post!
Took me back to my days living in Germany in the 80’s, and when I ski instructed in the Alps whenever I could get away from Army life. Les Arcs I never skied, but got to Chamonix and Aguile du Midi many times. Pretty area.
Looking forward to the in depth review.
Ray….seems like you loved so much the Firenze Marathon, as it’s the second/third time I’m spotting you wearing that t-shirt!
Ciao da Firenze ;)
I’ve only got one vest. :)
Hi Ray,
thanks for your pictures from skiiing, I love to do it as well.
Question on Fluri app: I have to wait for strava integration to show my tracks on the slopeplan, correct? I can´t export it to re-import it to fluri?
Thanks
When the Strava integration is live, you will be able to generate the trail maps with overlay automatically for all your Strava ski activities. They will be saved in Fluri so you can view them later. You can always add them as photos to your Strava activity – they look great in the mobile feed that way. Currently there is no way to do it manually as you are suggesting but if you have a sample activity you can point me to I can generate one for you.
Thanks Jay, looking forward to this!
When you make your turns you should use your stick more! :D
Besides that: Excellent skiing!
this is my first experience watching video from a 360 degree camera. I’m stunned with the experience and how good it is! For me, I’m interested in this for safety, to record every road bike ride I take in the event that I get hit or harassed, as evidence.
Question about Fluri, I’d tried contacting Fluri via Fluri’s website contact form but it doesn’t work:-
“Unable to send form. No storage service is configured. Configure one using the ‘Storage’ tab from the configuration area for this block.”
I’ve downloaded the app to my phone, but have a question about login process.
Do I have to have a Facebook account to use the app and download maps or will clicking the “Go Skiing” button do this? I don’t use Facebook and don’t really want to start!
I live in Banff and go to Lake Louise every weekend.
I also use a Garmin Fenix 3 whilst skiing and would like to be able to import data from that into your app. I have a few weekends of skiing data from my Fenix 3 that I could import to test your app.
Thanks
Andrew
Sorry you’re having difficulty with the website. Currently the only way to log in is through Facebook. Fluri is a new startup this season and Facebook is the most efficient way to let users create accounts and find their friends. We will have email/password login for next season. But you can use the app now without logging in by just tapping Go Skiing as you said. If you email team@fluri.ski with your Fenix activities we can show you how they would look on the Lake Louise map. Just send GPX files as attachments or send links to Strava activities.
Ray,
Any plans/can I make this a request to review the Yuneec Typhoon H? I’ve heard “it is being called the DJI (4) eater”
Hi Ken-
No plans at the moment, but I’m definitely keeping an eye on it! I’m a bit limited in space when it comes to all these drones!
Cheers.
You can send one (or two) of them to me! See how accommodating your readers are to helping you out with your space issues! ;-)
People are generally discouraged from skiing in t-shirts because a simple fall can easaly lead to quite some gruesome wounds on uncovered skin. I had this problem myself once, although in my case I was wearing a long sleeve fleece jacked that slided up my arm during the fall.
Awesome blog. You guys should try skiing and flying at the same time. Like this: link to youtu.be
So far I think it’s never been done before.
Ray
Do you wear your Fenix 3 inside or outside your ski jacket? My Fenix 2 had a separate velcro ski band and I wore it on the outside of my jacket, however I have a F3HR and would prefer to wear it on my wrist inside my jacket (plus I don’t know if the band has the necessary diameter.) I guess I’d like to know whether the GPS is affected.
Chappo
Generally I wear it on the outside, merely so I can see it. But I’ve also worn it inside the jacket and haven’t had any accuracy issues with it there instead (temperature aside obviously).
Hi, thanks for the brilliant review!
Do you think the DJI Mavic Pro has better auto tracking than the Phantom 4? I.E. Any technical improvements in tracking capability?
Thanks,
Jez
No, not really.
