Have some fun in the travel section.
I travel a fair bit, both for work and for fun. Here’s a bunch of random trip reports and daily trip-logs that I’ve put together and posted. I’ve sorted it all by world geography, in an attempt to make it easy to figure out where I’ve been.
My Photography Gear: The Cameras/Drones/Action Cams I Use Daily
The most common question I receive outside of the “what’s the best GPS watch for me” variant, are photography-esq based. So in efforts to combat the amount of emails I need to sort through on a daily basis, I’ve complied this “My Photography Gear” post for your curious minds (including drones & action cams!)! It’s a nice break from the day-to-day sports-tech talk, and I hope you get something out of it!
The Swim/Bike/Run Gear I Use List
Many readers stumble into my website in search of information on the latest and greatest sports tech products. But at the end of the day, you might just be wondering “What does Ray use when not testing new products?”. So here is the most up to date list of products I like and fit the bill for me and my training needs best! DC Rainmaker 2024 swim, bike, run, and general gear list. But wait, are you a female and feel like these things might not apply to you? If that’s the case (but certainly not saying my choices aren’t good for women), and you just want to see a different gear junkies “picks”, check out The Girl’s Gear Guide too.
Er, yeah. This isn’t Open Source at all. At best it’s “Public API.” While allowing interaction is always better than nothing, I’m sure the Open Source crowd would not appreciate the misuse of what is a very well understood term in software development. At least they didn’t call it “Free Software.” That’d invoke the wrath of RMS and then they’d be in a world of hurt.
Did you happen to talk to Computrainer about uploading rides/efforts to other third party platforms. I really keep a lot of my ride data that I like to analyze (for free, not training peaks). I use garmin connect (now auto to strava, thanks to your post) and want to see if they have any plans for that? Thanks, keep up the good work!
It wasn’t something we discussed. Though, with Kinomap you can do exactly that. So in a round about way that works out.
(Sites they support: Training Peaks, RunKeeper, Strava, and then just e-mail of files that you can upload wherever).
Excellent. Just the question I had….third party export. I did manage to export data once from a Computrainer file to Strava, but it was so convoluted and time consuming I gave up trying it again.
My only missing data metric for export to Strava is power (from the Computrainer). So it look like with Kinomap I can get Power, HR, Speed, Cadence etc. exported?
Yup, it’ll layer in power.
RM1 will generate a pwx file that can at least be used on other sites. ErgVideo is a problem since it uses a format that some programs (SportTracks for instance) can’t read (unless using the now unsupported CT import plugin). CT and EV switching to a more universal file type would be very helpful.
Definitely a move in the right direction. Third party software support on top of the reliability of the CT platform is a killer combination.
Hummm, I’m fringe geek and always looking to save a buck. I had a look at the Amazon link for the Rasberry Pi starter kit. Do you have a link to any info on how to proceed with this kit (or instructions on how you set yours up)?
I didn’t see any instructions on the Kinomap website.
Thanks Ray!
@Gunnar: the instructions are on the Kinomap trainer website, under the Computrainer section:
link to trainer.kinomap.com
Thanks Laurent!
Just to let you know that the new version integrating most of the features unveiled in Ray’s article is pending Apple’s validation…
Also, the Android app is opening for beta testing this Monday Sept 15th: register by sending an email to support@kinomap.com if you’re interested (basic app, with support for the KICKR, Computrainer and Elite Qubo).
Laurent, from Kinomap
Version 7.0 of Kinomap Trainer including Computrainer support, channels, new design, etc is now live
oh cannot wait for the trainer review… signed up for Lake Placid next year and really need to up my game over the winter break and spring and a trainer will be key. Hope you cover both bike based trainers and stationary
In the article you mention having trainer recommendations in early October. I may have missed it but don’t see that article and am looking for one now. Thanks.
I am a geek and a cyclist so this sort of thing seems really appeals to me. I have a compu trainer and an Elite Real Axiom trainer. Would the Kino Bottle or just the software all me to use both trainers ( or any other trainers I get) simultaneous so I can set up races / training sessions with multiple riders ? Great review, keep up the good work!
Thanks!
@Robert: yes, use the Kinobottle or just the ctnet software for your Computrainer. For Elite Real Axiom, make sure to have the ANT wireless version and you’ll need the Wahoo dongle. You can then enjoy multiple riders sessions with the contest or public races modes allowing up to 10 riders at the same time. You’d need an iOS device for each trainer though (coming soon on Android)
Does the pacer function work with Kinomap. I’m not a geek but does this just add to the Computrainer software or does it replace it? I’m still using a Nintendo version but I also have a newer Computrainer but haven’t set it up because I’ll have to buy a PC and I never used anything but Mac’s and every time I read the instruction for the PC setup I freeze at the complexity.
I have a Computrainer and have ordered a raspberry pi to make the Computrainer wireless but after another Internet reach for wireless Computrainers I came across a ctant+ device would install both be redundant? With the ctant+ device their claim is that you can add the Computrainer as a wireless device but unless it’s sendinding a signal I’m not clear on how this works??.
Any clarity would be appreciated
CTANT+ was more about broadcasting your speed/cadence/power as ANT+, and not so much about actually controlling the CompuTrainer.
