Howdy!

Well, a few weeks have passed us by since the last newsletter. Approximately more than you can count on one hand. But hey, who actually uses their fingers to count these days?

Dare I ask how everyone’s doing?? I’m not sure about you, but I’m going to need a well-orchestrated intervention to get me out of these yoga pants and hoodies. All kidding aside, “what happened to the newsletter?”. I have to say folks, I got a little overwhelmed with life. With letting the mind roam into the darkness of current world health affairs. Frustration, sadness, confusion, mixed with constantly trying to find the positive! While I spent the days with the Peanuts all was fine, I kept my chin up, made the most out of my time with the girls. But when the day was done, and I was left to pick up ALLLLL of the craft materials, Lego blocks, and scraps of meals off of the floors, that’s when exhaustion and a slice of sad crept in.

The last thing I wanted to do was sit down and try to write a newsletter. And not because I was SO overwhelmed, but because I wasn’t confident in knowing WHAT to say. These days, It’s really hard to know what to say (on a public platform). People all over the world are suffering, or thriving, or just surviving day to day. Others have taken it upon themselves to inspire, teach, provide free content, or motivate. And, I really don’t even want to get into it about “those people” making their sourdough bread…(though...I'd love to eat some!).

So what DID I do with my free time in the evenings over the last 9 weeks? I’ll get into that in my section below the tech. So stick with me while I cruise through the tech review and I’ll give you all the deets!

Oh - and two line heads up, a bunch of Father's Day focused Garmin sales began today. $150 off the Fenix 6 series, $100 off Instinct, and probably some other gadgets. Links and details here. Movin' on!

First up: Wahoo. The company who really realllllly likes to remove vowels from their product names, has released the new 2020 TICKR Heartrate straps. Most notably, you’re coming out of this with multiple concurrent connections, and transmission of run metrics to your wearable. Cool!

Next we have the third generation of Garmin’s bike radars. Ray managed to crank out the in-depth review for these well loved safety products, the Garmin Varia RTL515 and the RVR315. Take a read to see what he, and the 170+ commenters had to say!

Continuing on the Garmin theme, we have a post on Garmin Launching Strava and Komoot Route Sync. In this post I learned there was a thing called Komoot, and I learned where Ray had stuffed MY Garmin Edge 500! No Ray, SHE IS NOT OLD SCHOOL! She’s simple and classy. I want her back please.

And last but not least. FORM Swim Goggles Adds Openwater Swimming to Garmin and Apple Watches. Of course they did! Because we aren’t going to see the inside of a swimming pool for like, another decade. Bravo FORM, wise move. Normally during a post like this, Ray takes the opportunity to dig up a picture of me with my signature swim cap. Which he failed to do, so I hereby present it to you. You’re welcome!

Oh - and behind the scenes tidbit: Ray has finally received, unboxed, and as of earlier today, now riding the Stages Bike. So, if you haven't followed the DCRAINMAKER Instagram account, you should - he's been posting little tidbits about that bike and all sorts of behind the scenes things. Albeit, almost always via Instagram stories. He's still terrible at actually making regular Instagram posts. I however, am fantastic at making regular posts, as evidenced by my latest Instagram photo.

With that, we are at the end of tech catch up for this week. Next up we have Podcast updates and YouTube-y goodness.

The FIT File with DC Rainmaker and GPLAMA:

It seems the podcast has been social distancing itself. So, at the moment there are discussions on the next episode, but I think they are as far behind in recording as I was with the newsletter. But hey, now’s a good time to go back and listen to the oldies!

Check out the FIT File Page for the archived episodes!

As always, for your streaming convenience, if you’re not at your computer you can pick your fancy of streaming platforms via iTunes, Google Play, or Spotify to tune in.

YouTube

Well I’m going to give Ray some super props here. The YouTube output and production quality has been “top” lately. There have been 13 new videos since the last time we chatted here. I won’t list them all, the latest 3 were all in the posts from above. But notably there is a trending video on IQ2 Power Meters, and a tone of fun drone footage. Check them all out here at the DC Rainmaker YouTube Channel.

In-Depth Thoughts from The Girl

Well hey there. Huge thank you for making it past all that techie stuff. As promised, I said I’d fill you in on what I’ve been up to since…. Errrr April 1st-ish.

First of all, I KNOW some of you are wondering what happened to running? I had been posting regularly of my progress and then it stopped suddenly and never re-started. Well. That’s because I was stopped suddenly. While out running on a nice easy run, nothing special, about two miles in, I heard/felt that dreaded low calf "pop". Out of the blue, so homeward I hobbled.

It’s a longer story than that, but you get the point. Maybe I’ll tell you more about it in the next edition of the Quarantine Corner! Wait, you don’t know what the Quarantine Corner is? Oh, sorry. Well, as a way to give a bit more back to our annual DC Rainmaker Supporters, I approached Ray with this idea to record some videos at home (while everyone is in lock down) of… well, “us”. It’s basically us at the end of the night, at our kitchen table, once all the peanuts are tucked in, shooting the $h!t about our current “life affairs”. Some topics are about our latest wine discoveries, or Ray’s poor choice in chocolate. Other’s are running strollers, pizza, and how Ray manages to break technology often. We do not engage in tech talk. This is just our honest, end of the day, hang-out chats that we have before migrating to the couch to finish off whatever Netflix series we are onto next. So, if that’s of any interest to you, and you’re also looking for a feel-good way to support the blog in these very uncertain times, go ahead and check out the “Support” page. There are 2 episodes ready to watch, and if you are awaiting the third one and have a question or comment, simply reply to this newsletter!

Well that somehow worked out to be a decent prelude to “how to support local” right now. I know you are tech savvy, as anyone following Ray has to be, and you probably already know this. So I’ll keep it short. Now is more important than ever to “support local”.  While you might be thinking “how? Everything is closed?” Well, you can opt to take the three extra seconds to head to your favorite online blog, influencer, (family owned) website, or charity and click on his or her’s Amazon affiliate link before you do your shopping. I'm not even saying you should pick ours; though it would be nice. Or as stated, another small business who’s working super hard in these strange times! THANK YOU!

Okay. Onwards. What else? Hmmm, well honestly there’s not too much exciting to say. It’s been Groundhog Day for a long time. I am still cranking away at the article or series of articles I would like to write on a woman’s return to athletics post-partum. This includes many many things like, testing workout programs, reading as much research I can, interviewing specialists in the field, fitness trainers focused on this topic, and dare I dream of getting in touch with some high profile athletes who are willing to share. It’s tough though. The more you learn, the more you know you need to learn. I don’t want it to be a puff piece. And realistically, you are “postpartum” for the rest of your life. So, it’s hard to know when or what milestone to cut it off at. But, fear not, it is still coming.

I think I’ll stop babbling now. As always, thanks so much for reading and continuing to support the website. Until… next time,

~The Girl
