Something look funny? Read this newsletter online!

Hey there!

Welcome back to yet another newsletter! Are you wondering what has been happening in the Maker biz and family life lately? Well it’s a LOT. As always, we never just sit still. Last week we were off to the Alps for a ski week. But I’m getting ahead of myself, I’ll save those details for the end of the newsletter. First we must do our homework and see what’s new in the sports tech world! “On y va!”

Alright, well it seems I missed relaying to you that the live video podcast, Beers, Bikes, and Tech, is up. This was from the Rapha pop up in Adelaide for the Tour Down Under. Ray, Shane, and two special guests (Murray Hughes and Neil Henderson from Wahoo) took to the stage to answer all the questions. I saw in the comments that there is interest in having a female (or numerous females) in the next panel! YES! I agree, however it was suggested that I join the boys next time. I think we would have to name that podcast…. Beers, Bobbie’s Bad Jokes, Bikes, and Tech. Honestly, I’m blushing that anyone would suggest adding me to any (current) panel outside the context of “How to survive the early years of raising a family”, or “Diaper Rash Avoidance: Best Methods”. Maybe in another year. Though, maybe the next time GP Lama’s wife and I get together we could do a pretty fun piece on the mom-athlete-juggle? We could make it extra fun and be well champagned before recording!

If you missed the big news, Strava (finally) updated their bits and bobs to let you upload straight from the Apple Watch Activity App to Strava! Woot! From the number of comments building up in that thread, people seem more than enthused with the new feature! Check out the post: Strava Launces Native Apple Watch Workout Sync.

Next up was the Week in Review Post. Ray brings our attentions to the snowball that is gaining interest regarding LEGO’s lack of interest in bike lanes. Then he topped that off with an article that closely mimics a script you would assume was from an episode of Desperate House Wives… only it’s an explainer of the current state of the UCI! Ooops. Thanks CyclingTips!

Last but not least, another “pop some popcorn and grab a beer to read the comment section” of a post hit the blog. The Suunto 7 Wear OS GPS Watch In-Depth Review post is up. I won’t give up any spoilers here, for the most part everyone is shaking their heads in agreement with the post. But, every now and then there is some feistiness within the comments and challenges towards Ray. I find these posts are like watching a Gladiator style movie. Where you’re really cheering for the Gladiator, but it DOES get really exciting when the next basement door opens, and you see some hungry animal emerge. You can’t look away, what will happen?!?! Anyways, as always I appreciate that the comments are a place to really sort out the questions and confusions, we all know Ray can talk a little fast, let’s just keep the comments on the product huh?

…okay. This newsletter was finished on THURSDAY but due to some unforeseen computer issues (yes in this household) the newsletter is only coming to light now. So since then, Ray also popped out this fun piece about how Oreka took cycling rollers to a whole new level of scary. For realz, put your helmet on and check out the Oreka O2 Cycling Treadmill In-Depth Review.

That’s all from the literature side of things with week! Next up we have Podcast updates and YouTube-y goodness.

The FIT File with DC Rainmaker and GPLAMA:

FIT File page is up to date, and we have two new podcasts (new to me anyways). First up was the Episode #99 from Adelaide, Australia. Live recording, you can watch the video from the post, or simply listed to the audio!

Second is Episode #100! Woot woot, the big 1-0-0! And super fun topic on the table is… CORONAVIRUS… more specifically, the impact of the coronavirus on sports tech. Pretty interesting stuff, check it out!

As always, for your streaming convenience, you can pick your fancy of streaming platforms via iTunes, Google Play, or Spotify.

In-Depth Thoughts from The Girl

Hi Hi, and thanks for sticking with me to the end here!

So, I’m sure some of you are like… “excuse me but we didn’t see any Instagram running pics lately???” And this is true. Sad. But true. Less than 48 hours after the last newsletter, I was crushed by a cold/flu virus. NO, I didn’t have COVID-19, but it was brutal, and honestly I think it was the most sick I’ve been in years. Thankfully the brunt of it lasted a mere 12 hours or so, and then continued on like a bad hangover for the next 3-4 days. With that cycling through our house just before our ski trip the coming week, getting out for a run was last priority.

Then, the following week I did record some workouts on my trusty Fenix, but they were on the slopes! We had an absolute blast with the kids skiing, and having the chance to pop off just the two of us. But, let me tell you a little secret. There was nothing “vacation” about that trip. It was fun, but it was exhausting! The hats, mitts, boots, ski boots, helmets, googles, skis, sleds, snacks, water bottles… “everyone in the car… WHAT? You have to pee? OMG!” It was a workout to keep it all going somedays.

I will admit, it does take Ray being a bit of hard ass towards me to crack me out of my comfort zone. While on past ski trips (sans children) that would be liken to him casually steering me towards the Black Diamond ski run without me noticing until we are left staring down the Darth Vader style slope and then him saying “well, you gotta get down somehow”. This trip was a little different in that this time he was more like “WOMAN, TAKE THE CHILD ON THE POMA LIFT!”. You must understand, I CAN ski a black diamond run… but I CANNOT take a poma lift! Hahahaha honestly, I don’t know what the problem is, I didn’t grow up on them, we had the T-Bars or a highspeed quad lift. That was it. On past trips over the last few years living in Europe these “platter poles” have been my nemeses, and suddenly you want me to take my child up the lift WITH ME? Ummmm, we will both die. I will pummel the child somehow. We will roll back down the hill in a spectacular yard sale.

Alas, as always, Ray huffs and puffs, and eventually remembers I do always try my best, and maybe just a little encouragement is needed. So we did a trail run (one) on the poma lift. The lift operator was so very confused by my terror, however it was a success, no skis or egos were damaged. Then Ray was like “take the child”. So, remembering that we do have decent travel health insurance, I took our little P2 by the harness and HTFU’d. Up the lift we went- over and over and over again. Neither of us lost any limbs, and she only had to tell me a few times “Mama, TOO TIGHT”, to which I loosened my death grip on her harness. Sorry kid. In the end we had a blast, both kiddos were zooming up and down the slopes. Hopefully Ray will get us a ski post here before our memories start to fade!

Anyways, that’s all the news! I’ve laced up my sneakers since being back in Amsterdam, and I’ve almost completed my shopping list for my new strength training area at the DCR Cave. But I think that warrants a newsletter all of its own! So, enough typing for now, I need to go foam roll my old legs back to health!

As always, thanks for reading. Have a great weekend,

~The Girl
