Hello February!

Just like that we have left the cold dark month of January, and February has started off a little bit sunny! Thanks Amsterdam weatherman!

It’s been a productive week for both the Boss man and I. He flew off to Chicago early Monday morning and I’ve been holding down the fort here at home. So let’s get going all the happenings from the week past!

First up, Ray knocked out his regulars. The Week in Review post this week has a really interesting article from Outside magazine regarding the website LetsRun’s message boards. I have to say, I hope they get their shizzz together and clean that up immediately! And to answer their question, it is NEVER okay to publicly comment on another person’s body/appearance. Especially young (female) athletes in a sport that has such extreme ideals on body mass/race weights. If you’re a taking money for advertising, driving people to your website (more clicks more money), and not being responsible for monitoring that level of hate, discrimination, the list goes on… then you’re awful. And now I’m all wound up! #FixGirlsSports

Okay, I’ll leave that alone for now! Next up is the 5 Random Things from this weekend past. A big ol’ combo of construction, track workouts, and of course eating. What we Maker’s do best!

A news story for you; Pioneer Exits Power Meter Business as Shimano buys their Cycling Business. Is it rude at all, that anytime we catch wind that another company has left the power meter biz that the epic drum and guitar intro to Queen’s “Another One Bites the Dust” song creeps into my head. And is not stuck in yours? Sorry. “Bump Bump Bump, Another bites the dust, another one’s gone and another one’s gone…” Sorry, couldn’t help it. Moving on.

Now last but not least. The Garmin Vivoactive 4 Smartwatch In-Depth Review has hit the web. I’m pretty sure this is the watch that continues to blind me in the middle of the night if Ray’s wrist does something funny midsleep, the screen lights up. As well, I love that there is a section in there regarding sleep tracking… What sleep? And why don’t naps count?? Anyways, if you’re interested in the Vivoactive line up, go forth and check it out!

That’s all from the literature side of things with week! Next up we have Podcast updates and YouTube-y goodness.

The FIT File with DC Rainmaker and GPLAMA:

I just checked out the FIT File page, and I’m surprised to see #99 hasn’t popped up yet. I know it’s been recorded so keep an eye there for the latest and greatest. Actually, go ahead and subscribe and you’ll get notified upon release!

As always, for your streaming convenience, you can pick your fancy of streaming platforms via iTunes, Google Play, or Spotify.

In-Depth Thoughts from The Girl

Hey there!

Last week I left you with the idea that maybe I’d start to share a little about my training here on the newsletter. Since I didn’t receive any hate mail from that, I took it as a positive start. I did receive some lovely messages of encouragement. So thanks for that!

Since last week, I did in fact log 3 runs, and the week is not over just yet, I’m hoping to sneak one in on Friday or Saturday too! I’m on a slow build to the 10km distance. Once there I think I’ll hold that ground for a while. I chipped away at 4.25 –  4.6 miles on each run (which is hovering in the 7km mark). I was pretty pleased with the last run especially, which felt super comfortable. I was just focusing on running form and nothing else. Being pleasantly surprised by the pace and HR average I couldn’t help but post a bouncing-eyebrow selfie on Instastories. 8:50 min/mile pace and HR average of 150bpm! Woot, even my old coach was proud! Now to be fair, I wouldn’t bet the house on it that my watch was on tight “enough” for the optical sensor to be 100% there, so I’m going to bite the bullet and snag one of Ray’s Scosche arm bands for a few runs to compare/get the wrist tightness correct. I say I’m not confident because it was chilly out, and I wasn’t all that interested in the data (until after it was over), so I didn’t want to keep pulling my sleeve up to look! Maybe some of the running attire companies could create a “peep hole” for the watches in long-sleeved shirts? Am I on to something?

Which brings me to another thing. Running attire! WOW. So other than my running shoes, most everything that I’m wearing these days is ummmmm well, yeah, going on 6-10 years old! WHAT? When did I become so old school? No, seriously, my GORE running vest (which I LOVE) is at least 8 years old! I really can’t imagine getting a different vest at this point except for the fact that I realized it’s so old, that the zip pocket for your phone, keys, etc. was designed back in the day when phones kept getting smaller. While I don’t normally run with a phone, I do like to take it with me “just in case” when Ray is out of country. But it had zero chance of fitting. So maybe I’ll take a poke around at some upgrades. Anyone have any favorite running pieces I should look into?

Finally, I’m just going to leave you with this fun little link. I was trying to find a picture of my running vest from back in our Alexandria, VA snow running days and found this little gem of Ray instead. This is what his selfies looked like 12 years ago! Ahhhhhhahahahaha I dare you not to look!

Well that’s all the excitement for this week. I’ll try to get into posting on Strava. I hear that’s a thing (man I’m out of loop). But until then, I’ll try to keep posting on my Instagram page what I’m doing with my running shoes.

As always, thanks for reading. Until next week,

~The Girl
