Have some fun in the travel section.
I travel a fair bit, both for work and for fun. Here’s a bunch of random trip reports and daily trip-logs that I’ve put together and posted. I’ve sorted it all by world geography, in an attempt to make it easy to figure out where I’ve been.
My Photography Gear: The Cameras/Drones/Action Cams I Use Daily
The most common question I receive outside of the “what’s the best GPS watch for me” variant, are photography-esq based. So in efforts to combat the amount of emails I need to sort through on a daily basis, I’ve complied this “My Photography Gear” post for your curious minds (including drones & action cams!)! It’s a nice break from the day-to-day sports-tech talk, and I hope you get something out of it!
The Swim/Bike/Run Gear I Use List
Many readers stumble into my website in search of information on the latest and greatest sports tech products. Too bad steering isn’t added for the original NeoBike (being an early adopter is always punished)
I’ve an original NeoBike and I can steer. Just updated a beta firmware (4.5.0) which was avaialable a couple of months ago.
Thanks Marc, works like a charm.
Will be doing a real test on Monday (had my training for today and next couple af days are outside days :-) )
The Lifefitness subsidiary ICG (“Indoor Cycling Group”) now has a smart training bike called the Ride CX for the private market and a high end smart bike IC8 which should be in the same class as the SB20.
I’d be interested to see your review of these bikes and the associated software. Note that the CX has a spinning bike interface: brake power is adjusted via a wheel behind the steering column — I don’t know if this can be done remotely.
I got my oh neo bike early September for about 2200 eur so there can be good deals. I guess it was pre update close out
Happy with yours? what did you upgrade from?
Speaking of trainers, I have a NEO 2T and keep waiting for Garmin to release a rizer like Wahoo and Elite already have. I wonder if I am waiting on a pipe dream and if I should just get the Elite one already? I hear people have used it successfully with the NEO even though it isn’t officially supported. Any thoughts Ray? Would you advise to be more patient for someone who likes the Garmin ecosystem?
As far as I remember to have read, NEO axle does not allow the bike to rotate…
I think it will not happen…
On the topic of Garmin bug fixes – have you been able to investigate whether Garmin has successfully fixed the auto-zero/temp compensation issues with the Rally pedals? It’s been mentioned as an improvement in all of their firmware updates, but I’ve seen no indication how successful they’ve been.
Any plans for a Zycle’s ZBike review? I reckon it’s one of the cheapest indoor smart bikes, seems interesting.
Do you think the neo bike (v1) is still worth buying in 2023? I am looking to upgrade from my neo (1) trainer to a cleaner permanent setup (dedicated paincave). Found deals at around 2000 EUR.
If you have a Tacx NeoPlus bike and use it with the Tacx app, can you turn left and right? Is it similar set up like Swift?
Thanks for the review, Ray. After shipping back five—!—of the old model (which I picked up on that fire sale you announced three years ago), Garmin sent me the Plus. What a difference. All of the issues I’d experienced—especially in the drive train—have been fixed. My ONE issue is with the steering, and it doesn’t seem to be a Tacx problem: I also own the Zwift Play paddles and they conflict with Tacx steering. But I see no way to turn off Tacx steering now: are you aware of one?
Has any experienced and found a fix for the thigh rub scenario that seems pretty common? For me I touch the adjustment rail under the seat at downstroke. At very average height, I would have to slam the seat very far forward and mess up mechanics to avoid it. Not a total deal breaker, but super annoying and unfortunate design choice for the $$.
Garmin sent a service alert this week (July 2024):
“Garmin has identified an issue with the NEO Bike Plus trainer that can cause overheating or in rare circumstances, fire.”
“Discontinue Use of the External Power Supply
1. Disconnect the external power supply from the trainer and the wall outlet.
2. Do not use the external power supply until further notice”
A $4,000 trainer that we can’t use (at least to full functionality) and no ETA for repair…absurd. Do not recommend.
I was wondering about the differences to date with the Wahoo Kickr Bike Shift (since this smart bike was released after this firmware update). That smart bike supposed to respond pretty fast to power changes and transfer it back to Zwift in a faster way, making it more “snappy” for sprinting in Zwift races. Does this firmware update make the Neo Bike Plus on par with the Kickr Bike Shift for sprinting? What are your thoughts on this sprinting comparison?
