It’s somehow already halfway through November, and we’ve lacked a giveaway this month. Heck, did we even have a giveaway last month? That seems like eons ago. My bad.
No worries though, I’m here to save the day. Or at least, save Tuesday. I’ll be giving you a Fenix3. But not any Fenix3, one of their newfangled fancy looking Fenix3 watches. Had I thought this post through a little bit more, I could have put it on Friday, and named it the ‘Fancy Fenix3 Friday Freebie’, but alas – I didn’t think of that until now as I write on the plane. My mental schedule is set for the week, and here it is.
In any case, they released these ones back a few months ago. One is more of a leather strap, and the other more womanly with swanky rose gold trimmings. Though honestly, it’s still kinda a big watch for a woman – so if you’re more petite – I’ll let you downsize and pick some other GPS watch that Clever Training stocks, even if it might not look as pretty and be lacking the flower power.
Since I landed in a snowy place this evening, we’re going to get you thinking about winter. To enter, simply leave a quick comment with an answer to the following:
How do you adapt your training schedule for winter? Do you change sports altogether, or do you happen to be one of those lucky ducks living in Hawaii?
Giveaway closes Friday evening, November 20th at 11:59PM US Eastern Time.
Oh – and by the way – I’m piloting a bit of a new option for folks to support the blog. Many of you have asked for a way to simply support more directly than via Amazon or Clever Training purchases. Now you can! If you become a DCR Supporter™ (no, not really trademarked) you’ll help support things around these parts. More tangibly though, you’ll get a totally ad-free site. Although you’ll still have to put up with my occasional rosé wine inspired tech rants. And pictures of the food I eat. And my travels. None of those disappear.
I use PayPal as a processing provider, but you need not have a PayPal account (it takes any credit card). I don’t store your credit card info, nor do I sell/giveaway your e-mail/info. But obviously you’re creating an account here to sign-in (so you can be super-special going forward and skip the ads). But to be SUPER CLEAR – you need not sign-up to enter the giveaway. As will ALWAYS be the case, my regular giveaways are free to enter.
You can also sign-up for just my newsletter – which is a roughly once a week collection of my posts and a few additional tidbits. Again, another thing that a gazillion of you have asked for for many years. Simply hit up the checkbox at the bottom.
With that – thanks for reading, and the support! And of course, as always, thanks to Clever Training for giving away some really pretty watches! You can always save 10% with them via the DCR Coupon Code or VIP program.
FOUND THIS POST USEFUL? SUPPORT THE SITE!
Hopefully, you found this post useful. The website is really a labor of love, so please consider becoming a DC RAINMAKER Supporter. This gets you an ad-free experience, and access to our (mostly) bi-monthly behind-the-scenes video series of “Shed Talkin’”.

Otherwise, perhaps consider using the below link if shopping on Amazon. As an Amazon Associate, I earn from qualifying purchases. It doesn’t cost you anything extra, but your purchases help support this website a lot. It could simply be buying toilet paper, or this pizza oven we use and love.
Living in Norway, with beautiful rainy, windy winter weather, so putting on my wool underwear and my Castelli cycling clothes and go out for a nice ride… :-)
Usually I transfer my trainings to XC skiing but recently winter has been postponed so I can actally run outdoors .
Alas discard the short shorts and make sure to up the tempo. It’s never that bad in SE Asia, but the incessant winter rain does make the trails that much more technical.
The weather really changes here in Penang Malaysia but heck its fun to ride a bike around here! Otherwise I just stick to the wind trainer and running at work with the odd swim!
Swap the ocean for the pool and the open road for the turbo; a really good strength and conditioning program; and regular running/exfoliation sessions in wind-driven rain fresh off the atlantic.
Winter = Being out for longer than usual but less frequently and the dreaded turbo……..
Lots of gym work!
Winter means the bike goes onto the trainer, the swim goes indoors and the run becomes the primary outdoor work. Aim is to do a marathon and a couple of half marathons over the winter break (June – Aug here in Australia).
My philosophy is there is no such thing as the wrong type of weather, juts the wrong type of clothing!
I play rugby through the winter and carry on commuting. Week off rugby to go and do some cold hills in the Lake District this weekend though.
Upping the pilates and then London marathon training outdoors in whatever Northern Ireland/London chooses to throw at me.
As we are heading into summer down in NZ, it is the reverse for me so will base my comments on what I should have done over winter (but didn’t do) – more indoor intervals, more often….so I could have talked more smack about now….as opposed to grovelling before I get spat out the back while coughing up a lung…
I start running in the lunch hour. It’s less cold and this way i can run with natural light and optimizing my time.
Hours spent looking at garage wall on turbo trainer ;-)
In Durban, South Africa, you need little more than a long sleeve when riding. Running is still in shorts and a t-shirt.
Instead of running outdoor 3-4 times a week, I do my runs in the gym before or after weight training.
Maybe I’ll go for an outdoor run once a week
Lots of clothes and lamps for running and biking. Once the roads get icy I set up my Vortex Smart for the bike sessions.
It’s sort fo challenge with nasty, dark Finnish weather. I cross train more and also do lunch break runs instead early morning runs.
Treadmill and trainer.
I will concentrate more on the athletic aspects of running by joining a fitness studio for a few months. Basically I will do some TRX courses and stuff like this. But still I will have 4-5 running hours outside but without sprints or intervals. Keep running ;-)
I usually use the treadmill to keep active during winter!
I just reduce my running milage (I love winter runs) and of course I use my trainer for cycling.
In the winter, I’m quicker to head to the pool if I don’t feel like running in the cold. Other than that, I keep things very much the same.
I switch to using kettlebells, and of course my trusty jump rope, and stay inside.
Winter ain’t gonna stop me from running. Sometimes even prefer snow over hot, sunny weather. Nothing better than running in snowy fairytale.
Shorter rides, the trainer, and definitely more time in the gym. I also find it helps to have some mid-winter goals to keep you motivated (like riding in Hawaii in January).
Heavily lugged shoes and getting on the trails.
Winter is for conditioning, so it’s all about circuits in the gym
For winter I cut down on the cycling and running load (it is raining), and keep the pool load (it is indoors).
Also, I do a lot more yoga and pilates to fend off injuries I accumulated during the summer abuse..
I’m a runner living in the Netherlands. Most of the times, the winters are mild enough to keep running outside. Most of the times, the temperature doesn’t drop below -5 celsius degree during winter, so running outside is still an option. Last year, I could even run in shorts most of the time.
Plan to run more often than in summer, always outside. And why not try a gravel bike for cold adventures…
More indoor riding, I guess!
I’m changing out my road bike for my CX bike and try to do as much of my training as possible outside. When winter really kicks inn I have an old turbo trainer for the worst days and also spend most of my weekends skiing.
I don’t really change the amount I run, just wear more layers and choose more dark-friendly routes.
Trail running and CX bike, and my swimming goes indoors. That said, it’s been as wet through the summer as it is in the winter this year!
Gloves when running.
(Is the competition winner the one with the most interesting reply? Curses. Hang on, let’s see what else I can squeeze out… £12 Nike running gloves: I was trying to only spend 50p, but they were the only thin gloves I could find… I’m still not going to win, am I.)
I do not change that much my schedule. Just OWS is limited to very few cases, but still feasible (Ligurian see – Italy)
Living in Denmark, it’s gonna be running outside with multiple layers of clothes on, swimming in an indoor pool. Thinking about buying a hometrainer for the bike, but not sure the girlfriend will allow it… :/
It is not that cold in winter in Spain so I plan to keep running 3-4 times a week. When my new membrane jacket arrives I will have no excuses!!!
Living in Cape Town means mild but wet winters, so cycling miles go down as running especially trail running and indoor swimming goes up.
I’m hitting the turbo on my balcony, I think my neighbours think I’m a bit strange.
in dubai we are just starting our season so lots more training!
I still run outside and callisthenics in nearby park, beast mode
During the Winter I ride less on my road bike (falling from 1200 km / month to a 800 km / month) and I run more (going from 2 sessions per week to 3 sessions!). I also go ski mountaineering at least 1 day every 10 days and when it’s rainy or when the road is humid I trade my road bike with my mountain bike.
Adapt I do. I tend to switch from cycling and running when the weather allows it to the winter regime made of spinning classes during the week and skiing + cross-country skiing during the weekends
Long sleeves and pants until it gets below -15 then drinking glögi until it warms up again.
In the winter, i do sky alp, less running and no more cycling, but i don’t like to train indoor, so all my works are outside. (except some swim in the pool)
No real changes to my routine.
Northern Italy, cold and foggy but I plan to hit the road at night (9:30pm) two times a week with lamps, until temperature drops below 5. Then it’s finally time to buy a trainer.
A bit more treadmill, a lot more layers and a lot of willpower should do the trick :)
Well I happen to come from the tropics. So winter.. I guess it’ll be the same old ‘get completely sweat-logged’ things! Unless I escape to somewhere with a real winter. Then lots of long runs before snow hits!
just more swim and treadmill, less intensity and shorter workouts
Only one run per week, some MTBiking on the weekend and a lot of futsal mid-week (…and then dancing :-P link to youtu.be Just kidding, I hate dancing!)
I try to change very little. I run outside under any conditions (seriously) and most of my mid-season bike training is indoors.
Thank you for making this available.
XC skiing in the weekends when the winter finally arrives. Running on week nights – it is perfectly OK as long as you watch your step on the ice and keep the forward momentum.
I am a “lucky” duck living in Belgium. (Read: rains a lot) So I’ll be hitting the gym more often, running on the treadmill. Furthermore, I am thinking of buying a Tacx Vortex based on your review. Lastly, I will be hitting the fields with my 10 year old Mountainbike and will be eating a lot of dirt the next couple of months!
Living in Madrid means that in winter you have to wear more gear, but that doesn’t keep me without training.
Have a nice day!
Getting on the trainer (enjoying zwift) more often and go for runs through cold and icy Berlin.
As a cross country skiier I switch from roller skis to snow skis.
I just bundle up – add more layers & keep on going.
Keep running – if necessary with DIY spikes

Spinning and riding MTB in the durt :-)
As we don’t have many of bad weathers days here in Recife, I just add some more indoor trainings with TrainerRoad.
X-country skiing this winter
CX skiing, more swimming in pools
More cloths and more running because there isn’t that much snow in the Netherlands. Thinking about buying a Tacx but that might have to wait until next winter because of other investments.
Living in Austria doing more running and indoor cycling less biking
X-country skiing with my wife
I don’t change much, only the clothes I wear because in here the problem it’s the cold not so much the rain
Ray, first off, I was glad to hear that you were safe and sound.
The winter is the dreaded treadmill time. I live in rural Maine and there are no sidewalks sadly.
During winter I try to maintain the same frequency of training (i.e. outdoors running and cycling). Cycling in the winter season can be difficult, especially in harsh weather conditions, nevertheless I prefer shorter sessions or even rest above indoor trainers. :-)
I just run in the treadmill! It stinks but it gets the job done.
Hi Ray. I am one of those lucky ducks who is not living in Hawaii. I have a heavy rainy season though so I need some spare running shoes cause I am a bit lazy to bring my muddy shoes to laundry machines.
winter for me means training with gloves and gore-tex, lots of indoor trainer rides, more strenght training, no openwater swims and generally training at night during weekdays. Other than that, no changes in my regular SBR diet!
I hope I am lucky this time, fingers crossed, ready to take some Fenix3 love!
Train in the rain!!!
Less road biking, more CX, MTB and trainer time. Or just more time in bed.
I move indoors and do lots of dreadmill runs.
Since Im such a lame duck in running, I’ll do a big block of running focus and to keep the bike legs sharp I’ll be doing Zwift rides every other day. Be prepared :O
I live in Malaysia where it is almost a constant 30 C, 365 days/yr – which has its own challenges in terms of training.
But after 5 years here I am hoping to move to a place that has 3-4 seasons.
Terry
Would be nice to wear alongside my Ambit2!
To the gym Geeves! I’ve wanted to start training for Tris so planned on that this winter.
I would really like to see some winter over here actually, because the temperatures are still strangely high for this time of year. So no extra layers yet. I do change the schedule to a more shorter intense training instead of long cold swims/bike and runs.
I will be more on my taxc trainer for cycling but when it comes to running its still outside and no changes, i live in Sweden so hopefully it will stay at -10 celsius at most ;)
Winter training on the road bike will happen indoors, and outside I’m going for mountainbike rides, muddy season ahead!
more swimming and indoor running – less long bikes
Cycling, running and rowing, as usual!!
Doing more stuff indoors.
No changes in the winter training compared to summer training. Just a few extra layers and sometimes cycling on the indoor trainer.
How do you adapt your training schedule for winter? Do you change sports altogether, or do you happen to be one of those lucky ducks living in Hawaii?
I have the luck to live in Melbourne, Australia. Winters are cold, but no ice cold, so usually, I just gear up in warm clothes and continue the same routine (one run, one swim and one long (for me ~40km+) bike ride per week.
But we’re heading into summer now, so I’ve got that going for me :)
I just tend to put on more layers when going outside :-)
Living in Denmark, Europe the weather kinda sucks regarding winter training. I plan to buy my first hometrainer after reading the recommendations list.
I live in Australia, you just put on a long sleeve shirt and you’re good to go..
Don’t want to put lights on my tri bike, so less biking and more running.
I train with lots of layers and a headlamp for the loss of light.
Gym, Ski and once in a while a run outdoor when not freezing!
I live in Sweden. I just reactivated my Trainerroad account. Indoor biking and outdoor running will be my plan for the winter.
Switch to the new turbo trainer, as recommended by your recent post..
I keep running out site. live In Denmark, so it gets cold and dark during the winter. It unfortunately prevents me from running in the forest at the evening, so I have to run on the roads a lot more then I do during the summer.
During winter, i make different sport to keep my mind fresh and work different type muscles and effort. I’ll ride ski, i’ll attend spin class, i’ll ride mountain bike, and do some cross fit and core training. i’m close to mountain, so i’ll do some hicking too with family, it’s good for the mind.
living in Cyprus so weather its always nice :)
