It’s somehow already halfway through November, and we’ve lacked a giveaway this month. Heck, did we even have a giveaway last month? That seems like eons ago. My bad.
No worries though, I’m here to save the day. Or at least, save Tuesday. I’ll be giving you a Fenix3. But not any Fenix3, one of their newfangled fancy looking Fenix3 watches. Had I thought this post through a little bit more, I could have put it on Friday, and named it the ‘Fancy Fenix3 Friday Freebie’, but alas – I didn’t think of that until now as I write on the plane. My mental schedule is set for the week, and here it is.
In any case, they released these ones back a few months ago. One is more of a leather strap, and the other more womanly with swanky rose gold trimmings. Though honestly, it’s still kinda a big watch for a woman – so if you’re more petite – I’ll let you downsize and pick some other GPS watch that Clever Training stocks, even if it might not look as pretty and be lacking the flower power.
Since I landed in a snowy place this evening, we’re going to get you thinking about winter. To enter, simply leave a quick comment with an answer to the following:
How do you adapt your training schedule for winter? Do you change sports altogether, or do you happen to be one of those lucky ducks living in Hawaii?
Giveaway closes Friday evening, November 20th at 11:59PM US Eastern Time.
Oh – and by the way – I’m piloting a bit of a new option for folks to support the blog. Many of you have asked for a way to simply support more directly than via Amazon or Clever Training purchases. Now you can! If you become a DCR Supporter™ (no, not really trademarked) you’ll help support things around these parts. More tangibly though, you’ll get a totally ad-free site. Although you’ll still have to put up with my occasional rosé wine inspired tech rants. And pictures of the food I eat. And my travels. None of those disappear.
I use PayPal as a processing provider, but you need not have a PayPal account (it takes any credit card). I don’t store your credit card info, nor do I sell/giveaway your e-mail/info. But obviously you’re creating an account here to sign-in (so you can be super-special going forward and skip the ads). But to be SUPER CLEAR – you need not sign-up to enter the giveaway. As will ALWAYS be the case, my regular giveaways are free to enter.
You can also sign-up for just my newsletter – which is a roughly once a week collection of my posts and a few additional tidbits. Again, another thing that a gazillion of you have asked for for many years. Simply hit up the checkbox at the bottom.
With that – thanks for reading, and the support! And of course, as always, thanks to Clever Training for giving away some really pretty watches! You can always save 10% with them via the DCR Coupon Code or VIP program.
FOUND THIS POST USEFUL? SUPPORT THE SITE!
Hopefully, you found this post useful. The website is really a labor of love, so please consider becoming a DC RAINMAKER Supporter. This gets you an ad-free experience, and access to our (mostly) bi-monthly behind-the-scenes video series of “Shed Talkin’”.

Otherwise, perhaps consider using the below link if shopping on Amazon. As an Amazon Associate, I earn from qualifying purchases. It doesn’t cost you anything extra, but your purchases help support this website a lot. It could simply be buying toilet paper, or this pizza oven we use and love.
I will make use of my head torch and hope for bearable temperatures here in the UK.
Lisbon is not Hawaii, but the cold weather is still pretty manageable! I can cycle throughout winter just swapping out my regular road bike for a winter one.
I run and swim as regular and started to bike indoors on my trainer.
Planning to switch to mountainbiking for the winter season.
Thanks for the awesome blog!
One of the main changes during the winter is that I do my intervals in the indoors track. Otherwise, unless it’s -15 degrees Celcius or colder, warm ups and long runs continue outdoors as usual (with additional layer of clothes of course).
Running at midday
Running stays pretty much the same, long runs tend to be at a lower intensity though. Cycling mostly moves indoors onto the turbo.
More winter gear on!
More time on the turbo, and an longer run commute to avoid some of the darker unlit parts of my route.
I’m going more often to the Gym.
cross country running, indoor cycling on zwift, mtb, windsurfing,… enough options, even in Belgium.
More clothes for morning rides. On the plus side, I can sleep in longer on weekends
More running than cycling. When snow falls I have studded running shoes.
I toughen up and layer up. Bring on the cold!
Swim less, but run more. Few local clubs run duathlons. Hit up some longer trail runs.
Cycle commute in the morning is a little chilly..
I’I run in winter, waiting for the bike less. And I do not look forward to the late, cool watches.
I don’t really adapt my training at all in the winters, if anything I just put on an extra layer.
Kickr and Zwift with a dash of TrainerRoad.
Mode hamster on with the trainer at the garage
I actually prefer to run in the cold than in the Summer heat. The only downside is the need for a headlamp.
Thanks for the giveaway Ray!
In years past it was swim-bike or run come hail-rain or shine but last year and this one too i’ll be doing weights and gym classes for a bit of fun for the next few months
Très peu de changement pour moi, toujours sur mon VTT avec un peu de vélo de route et de course à pied. Habitant près de Paris le climat n’est pas extrême avec un peu plus de vêtements ça passe !
Very little change for me, always on my mountain bike with a little bike and road running. Living near Paris climate is not extreme with a little more clothes it’s OK.
Kickr all winter long for me
Over winter I don’t really change the running aspect of my training, just suffer it out and try to avoid the ice patches, but I tend to stay off the bike. I also usually put on weight.
no real need for adapting here in Australia. summer is more of the hassle…the occasional extra layer of clothing on cold mornings is all thats required
I’ll be mixing my riding up with a bit of Cyclocross this year and a few Wattbike sessions for intervals. Also hoping to work in a few long runs on nicer days.
not Hawaii :-/, but it’s also not so bad in Greece :-D Absolute lows in my town are around 0C (~30F) during the night, and worst that can happen from time to time is rain = day off :-P
Although I’m not one of the lucky ones living in Hawai and that I do get some winter every year – it’s rather mild here in Belgium. Having said that I do not alter my training schedule in any major way. There is just that period between the fall marathon and the beginning of training plan for the spring one (I’m trying to run two marathons a year), when I don’t stick to any training plan and tend to experiment a bit with different training methods. What I do stick to however is the schedule itself – four runs a week is a must, the Sunday one being a long one. Other than that it’s pretty much freestyle in that time of the year.
I personally find it easier to go out for a run in the winter, (in France at least). Even if I usually put some more clothes on.
High tempeartures are really a pain for me.
Just moving indoors for the bike on the Tacx Turbo. I’m still running outdoors and plan too all the way through the winter (although not very wintery in South East England at the moment). I havent progressed to open water swimming so no change there for the pool!
Lucky duck living in Singapore =)
london based: winter means no cycling, just running for me. and also more running on roads than in parks.
Keep in touch when you pass by Mallorca ;) – best!
If the weather allows I will keep running / cycling outside. Otherwise I will have to stay indoors and hit the gym.
I switch from cycling to trail running.
Also use the trainer indoors to keep my cycling legs ticking over.
Sigh, more trainer rides
More running, more zwift, less outdoor cycling. Vive la France !
Ja! I live in the caribbean! So i adjust by wearing a light jacket if needed.
How do you adapt your training schedule for winter?
– Less climbing, more high cadence riding. Try to do more swimming, keeping my level of fitness and avoiding the typical winter weight gains.
Do you change sports altogether, or do you happen to be one of those lucky ducks living in Hawaii?
– I don’t change sports, nor do i live in Hawaii. Though, the upper rhine valley is relatively warm. We usually don’t have too much snow in the winter, which makes road cycling possible pretty much year round.
Winter gear for the win!
If there will be snow in Latvia, I would replace running with xc skiing.
No real changes here – warm clothes and go!
Because of a new job, I moved to a new city and decided to do something for my health. So I started to run 3x a week and I am pretty proud to be able to run 10 KM (after 2 months of training). Because I am new to all this, I am experiencing winter “for the first time”, so I am not sure what to change. I guess I will just keep doing what I do and hope the route I am running won’t be too slippy.
In Melbourne, Australia the weather is consistently varied :-) so we are in the habit of coping with bad weather. In winter I generally cycle less, use a trainer, and do flat rides rather than climbing because descending a wet road is not so much fun.
I’ll be doing less cycling (I’m a fair weather cyclist) and more running miles (with more clothing on!)
Winter traing means indoors swimming and indoor riding (kettler Ergometer). Have not been swimming outdoor since medio september. Not that I couldn’t ride outside (it is not that cold) but it is dark (and mostly wet) both in the morning and after work.
Extra time inside in the gym crossfitting. But otherwise just keep up the training with my group!
I love to run when it’s cold so I’ll run more often outside during the weekend and because of the early night, going more often to the gym after 6pm.
Just a few but critical changes:
1. Reduce my long rides and runs
2. Increase strength training
3. Have more fun.
nothing changes in the routine. Just an extra layer or two :)
Harden the f*ck up! I allways train in the “wild nature” here in western germany. OK, sometimes not. :D
This winter I plan to do a lot of treadmill running :)
Wear warmer gear. Living in Ireland it rarely snows or is icy so its just cold, wet and windy in winter. Good gear sorts it all.
Flip side is its never really nice in summer.
Use my Kickr More indoor workouts. I’ve also become addicted to Zwift and am doing the 12 week FTP builder. the problem will be how will I adapt when the summer comes !?
This winter will be spend base training for La Marmotte on my Kickr with Trainerroad and Sufferfest. And hopefully a bit of core training on the side.
Get out on the hills Mtn Biking and Trail running – somehow the wind and the rain just seems to be normal when doing these!
Back to the tredmil and indoor training…outside too cold to handle in China
I drop my early morning training ride. Run a little more and rug up. It only gets to -5 deg C at Canberra’s coldest so nothing thermal tights or a good base layer can’t fix.
Wearing gloves, long trousers,… that’s the only difference. And – if it’s too slippery outside – I go to the local gym to run on a treadmill. But that sooo boring that I only do this in case of emergency.
In fact, I like running in the cold. It’s always a struggle to leave the comfortable warmth of home, but the satisfaction is great when you return.
Rock climbing and surfing!
Less kilometres, more clothes.
Trainer now during winter time, cycling in after winter time :-P + a lot of hich hiking!
First-time TrainerRoad (and structured training in general) user here! Lets see where that goes! ;)
Winter i traning inside. I want to try spining and squash.
After a short break with no sport, i switch to cross country skiing and mountain biking, running at slow pace, and indoor boxing (while keeping the usual swims and indoor biking). Not being obsessed by speed but rather enjoying the fresh air, a good way to smoothly prepare for the next season!
My training schedule will continue to follow the regular routine, since I already train mainly indoors (body weight based HIIT). For the outdoors training, I’ll look out the window whenever I feel like running and if it’s ok, I’ll maybe just run with shorts and a sweater instead of fully naked as usual :D
I wouldn’t consider a change in sports even if it was snowing and I was a swimming addict. There’s always a nearby swimming pool available! However, I’m a lucky duck living in Portugal. It’s not Hawaii, but it’s November and the sun is still high and shining with a whopping 24ºC outside!
cross country skiing
Being a bit tired from the constant workout going for Ironman Kalmar this year, Ive decided to try a few other different sports. Ive started climbing, playing squash etc. Ofcourse I still do a bit of running and Im accually looking forward to biking again, so there is hope ;)
Indoor Training and Velominati Rule 5
I don’t live in Hawaii but close enough on the Gold Coast in Australia. I guess in winter it’s actually the perfect weather for training over here :) Weather is in the mid 20s (Celsius) and it doesn’t tend to rain much, summer starts up again with a tonne of rain and temps back in the mid to high 30s (again in Celsius) and humidity is also in the 80s and 90s. Being a very pale person I tend to train more in the midday during winter and enjoy the perfect training weather and I have to hide away in the summer or risk getting burnt to a crisp :P I’ve recently acquired a second hand treadmill which should help me fit in some more long runs when the summer sun is bearing down!
Get ready for the mud and ensure batteries are charged for the headtorch for running.
Hide in the shed on the turbo for cycling.
I do indoor cycling, both trainer and spinning classes. If the weather here in Stockholm is decent I try to do regular outside rides on my CX. Some XC skiing if we have some snow.
More clothes, but also regular trainings: indoor cycling and treadmill.
Hey Ray,
Winter training is more about keeping the fitness up as there are no races for me. So I spend a lot of the time in the velodrome and not much on the road. Running is the same and swimming is replaced with rock climbing. Swimming being my least favorite of the three so it gets substituted for something awesome :)
Glad to see you and The Girl got through the recent troubles.
Drew
Winter = cross country running season, so nice big spikes for the wet sloppy mud!
winter is the best training season being in sub-tropical region. So time to get out and enjoy some good weather and train hard
I move into my basement for the winter. Trainer road & HBO Go will be only riding companions.
Have some great weather in South Africa, so no massive changes in training.
No Change – enjoying the warm & humid weather in Singapore to sweat 12months/year.
Winter in Sweden means a sweet mixture of xc skiing, tour skating and xc running. The season for tour skating has just started: link to youtu.be
Living in the French Alps means a lot of changes coming through winter !
Basically trading the bike for the skis and having a lot of fun touring in the backcountry + small runs to stay in shape. That’s the way to have some nice sleeping metrics !
Turbo, turbo and more turbo trainer. The joys of an Irish winter :(
Cross country skiing in Switzerland
:)
winter = long rides
Alas in the winter my training becomes far more turbo based and more time is spent working on pool technique and general conditioning with joyful summer rides and the more casual runs cut out of the system. Generally less junk miles and more focus.
Since most of my training is indoors, nothing much changes. Bike rides in the winter forest is fun, though.
I swim for most of my workouts, thus no excuses for me :-) For my outdoor training I just invested in winterproof attire.
Started getting fit last winter on an old treadmill. It was a wellness challenge the company I work for offered, and on a fluke to win $100, I did it. Well, walking got a hold of me. I also started eating better, and have lost 125 pounds. When summer came around all my walking was outside. I’m spoiled now, and winters here in North Carolina aren’t that bad, so winter is like summer, I’ll just put on more cloths and walk outside.
Cheers
Change up to a run focus and crank out the trainer!
Since lining in a warm country the winter training is almost the same – any how it’s great running in the Rain :-)
No major changes in my training during winter time, I run more, bike more and swim more :)
Living on the Cote d’Azur in the south of France, I can still run outside pretty much whenever I want, with an extra layer of clothes. Nice looking watches btw!
as it is gets to -20 Celcius in my city during winter, I switch to indoor trainings – crossfit, gym, tredmill
I am commuting each day between 15 and 50 km (depends which route I take). I do that all year. In winter time my race bike hangs on the wall and I am hitting gravel and road with my crosser. Luckily we have a gym at work. During lunch break I occasionally run. This way I am in pretty good shape when the first races begin.
Nothing changes, just more lights and more clothes as the darkness sets in
I use to do more spinning and more exercise indoor, but allways, and the wheather allows it, I ride outdoor. For me it´s better :)
Being in Australia we can continue to train outdoors all winter so the biggest change for us is usually throwing on a headlamp to run in the morning/evening or bike lights for the commute.
Oh and lots of whinging when swimming in outdoor pools.
More running
For me the cycling heads indoors and onto the trainer. The running long sleever also gets thrown on
It is usually not too hot in winter :) , so I plan to not give up running workouts. I have bought some new sports clothes. I hope now I have a good set to combine them for almost any weather.
Also it depends on snow. If there is just a little snow this winter, I will continue bike rides. In case of big snow I think about buying new ski set.
