It’s somehow already halfway through November, and we’ve lacked a giveaway this month. Heck, did we even have a giveaway last month? That seems like eons ago. My bad.
No worries though, I’m here to save the day. Or at least, save Tuesday. I’ll be giving you a Fenix3. But not any Fenix3, one of their newfangled fancy looking Fenix3 watches. Had I thought this post through a little bit more, I could have put it on Friday, and named it the ‘Fancy Fenix3 Friday Freebie’, but alas – I didn’t think of that until now as I write on the plane. My mental schedule is set for the week, and here it is.
In any case, they released these ones back a few months ago. One is more of a leather strap, and the other more womanly with swanky rose gold trimmings. Though honestly, it’s still kinda a big watch for a woman – so if you’re more petite – I’ll let you downsize and pick some other GPS watch that Clever Training stocks, even if it might not look as pretty and be lacking the flower power.
Since I landed in a snowy place this evening, we’re going to get you thinking about winter. To enter, simply leave a quick comment with an answer to the following:
How do you adapt your training schedule for winter? Do you change sports altogether, or do you happen to be one of those lucky ducks living in Hawaii?
Giveaway closes Friday evening, November 20th at 11:59PM US Eastern Time.
Oh – and by the way – I’m piloting a bit of a new option for folks to support the blog. Many of you have asked for a way to simply support more directly than via Amazon or Clever Training purchases. Now you can! If you become a DCR Supporter™ (no, not really trademarked) you’ll help support things around these parts. More tangibly though, you’ll get a totally ad-free site. Although you’ll still have to put up with my occasional rosé wine inspired tech rants. And pictures of the food I eat. And my travels. None of those disappear.
I use PayPal as a processing provider, but you need not have a PayPal account (it takes any credit card). I don’t store your credit card info, nor do I sell/giveaway your e-mail/info. But obviously you’re creating an account here to sign-in (so you can be super-special going forward and skip the ads). But to be SUPER CLEAR – you need not sign-up to enter the giveaway. As will ALWAYS be the case, my regular giveaways are free to enter.
You can also sign-up for just my newsletter – which is a roughly once a week collection of my posts and a few additional tidbits. Again, another thing that a gazillion of you have asked for for many years. Simply hit up the checkbox at the bottom.
With that – thanks for reading, and the support! And of course, as always, thanks to Clever Training for giving away some really pretty watches! You can always save 10% with them via the DCR Coupon Code or VIP program.
FOUND THIS POST USEFUL? SUPPORT THE SITE!
Hopefully, you found this post useful. The website is really a labor of love, so please consider becoming a DC RAINMAKER Supporter. This gets you an ad-free experience, and access to our (mostly) bi-monthly behind-the-scenes video series of “Shed Talkin’”.
Support DCRainMaker - Shop on Amazon
Otherwise, perhaps consider using the below link if shopping on Amazon. As an Amazon Associate, I earn from qualifying purchases. It doesn’t cost you anything extra, but your purchases help support this website a lot. It could simply be buying toilet paper, or this pizza oven we use and love.
Treadmill running and bodyweight training. A yoga studio opened in my neighborhood so I’m also thinking about that for flexibility.
Work on core strength but I want to try out Zwift.
No need to change anything in sunny Greece-you can still run with singlet and split shorts !!!
No need to change training much here in florida. Running mileage has a tendency to come up just because its so much more enjoyable to put in miles when its not oppressively hot and humid. otherwise swimming and biking remain relatively constant.
Living in Utah, where the snow is 6 inches deep on a warm day, my cycling habits tend to take a back seat. Trail running in the snow, on the other hand, is a lot of fun and should definitely not be missed.
Switch to weight training, trainer, plus keep training outdoors if the weather permits.
After work rides become lunch rides (why cant we always save the daylight?).
One of the lucky ducks in TX. It’s summer we have to survive.
I live in south america so get never get prepared here its always sunny… =)
Lots of time on treadmill and trainer. Thank good for gym’s wi-fi and Netflix.
I simply train for a shorter distance, Shorter/faster :)
Well I live in cold, wet, windy Blightly (that’s UK for those of you across the pond that don’t know where Blighty is!!) it’s definitely long tights, long sleeves, buff, hat, gloves and some good quality waterproofs. Put the lot on the radiator the night before and then get up and go for a lovely long run to start the day off. I don’t change my fitness habits for a bit of piffley winter weather!! x
I adapt, cross country skiing, skating, and of course the indoor usual :-)
What do you know i’m from Canada …no choice !!!!
Bit less running, bit more mountain biking
Thanks DC, no major changes needed, I live in Guatemala, so just long sleeve running shirts and long pants and your done :)
Mostly indoor training here in Sweden. Trainer with Zwift, Teainerroad, Sufferfest snd Bkool!
Running on threadmill. Swimming in pools..
Hawaii you said.. Might have to move there :)
During the winter, I add more layers and keep hiking/biking/running. But winter also brings fun winter sports like snowshoeing and skiing so I’ll tackle those first whenever possible to make the most of the variety.
For running and biking, I layer up. Don’t have a great system for swimming. The local Y is the only game in town for an indoor pool. And alas, I’m not paying that membership fee.
I run more…it’s easier than running in heat and we usually don’t have less than -10C
A lot more indoor activities including yoga and weight training
I put the bike on the trainer, continue to run outside and swim at the ymca. I do add in strength training and do more fun 5k or relay races during the winter. I will also do a travel race to a warmer climate with friends this year!
Winter means pulling out the high visibility jackets, gloves, and hats. When the snow falls, the microspikes make an appearance.
I plan on transitioning into triathlons next year, so layering up for runs, riding on a trainer, and swimming inside. Also going gym for general strength conditioning.
No such thing as bad weather, just bad kit.
For running I’ll add my North Face Summit Series gilet in the cold. In the wet gore tex socks and OMM Kamleika jacket keep the moisture out.
Turbo sessions with all the sufferfest videos keep me going on the bike.
Xc-skiing all the winter! :)
I put on my spiked shoes, head band and wind jacket. Turn my head lamp on and just head out in the white winter wonderland… and the new home gym sees some more action.
Even living in northern Michigan, I gotta stay outside. I hate treadmills and I hate stationary bikes. Waterproof shoes for early winter weather, then gaiters once the snow’s a bit deeper, then snowshoes once it’s really deep. I also XC (skate) ski a good bit. Hoping to find myself a fat bike to keep up my riding regimen as well.
Ride indoors and hit the treadmill.
I add clothes, or hit the treadmill.
I live in Texas, so that means I get a longer period to be outside. But that also means summers are brutal, but I won’t complain here. I am getting into triathlons so that means more time in the pool and on the indoor trainer. Running on Texas ice isn’t fun so the treadmill will see more of me unfortunately.
This year winter training will be very social although more time will be spent in the pain cave through the help of Zwift and my new trainer. But also shifting focus from rumaking as main sport to cross country skiing, but still maintaining some sessions with running to not loose it all together during winter.
In the winter, run intervals are at lunch time, slower runs in the morning…if any….hate running in the cold dark. No early morning pre-work rides – more hometrainer. I would be happy just to be a duck, forget the lucky, in Hawai, or an ugly duckling…I could so be an ugly duckling in Hawaii.
Everything is the same, Just with more layers of clothes :-)
I wear a wind proof bottom layer and leggings. If too cold I move indoors, but I live in Florida so I don’t see many mornings below 30 degrees :)
To this question just simple answer:
there is no bad weather for a runner just bad clothing :)
so in winter I user warmer clothes
Basically I get fat
Glad you and your family are safe. Love the site.
Spiked shoes and warm clothes for me
Would love to try it – it’s not convenient to run with the Edge in hand, and hiking alike!
I move more of my training indoors, using my Wahoo trainer for the bike and focusing more on strength training in the gym. Can’t run inside though… I hate the treadmill! So rain or shine I’ll still get my outdoor runs in.
I just ride a tauntaun.
(Actually, more TM runs and no open water; or, thicker compression suit, and a few more calories … The latter for reasons I’m probably making up.)
Will use the trainer a little more. Otherwise, no change.
I´m one of those lucky ducks living in Brazil! No need to change sports at all!
Will run outside as long as there is no ice. Move to the trainer for the bike. Get’s pretty cold here in the midwest.
I use my mtb bike instead of road bike or when it is rilly cold oudside I use indor trainer or go mountain running.
Here in SoCal I need to break out the long sleeve shirts and reflective shoes. That’s about it. We’re pretty fortunate.
I live in South Dakota. The question isn’t if it will snow, but when and how much. Along with the snow is the relentless wind. The past two years I’ve been spending my time fatbiking in the winter. Of course the distances change, but once you get the proper layers on, it is still quite enjoyable.
Road bike on the trainer until March, and the mountain bike takes centre stage. Also more cross work (running, swimming and yoga) to get stronger for backcounty snowboarding & splitboarding
I just set up my trainer in front of the computer and enjoy doing my interval in front of swift. Also, running help with the outside part!
I train inside. And when the snow comes it’s skiing time!
I like fancy watches :)
I hit the indoor trainer a bit more on the bike, but I like doing that anyway as you can control the workout more and be flexible scheduling with shorter days. I like running in the cold so that doesn’t change much. Right now I live in Florida so not much has to change, but in Michigan it definitely does!
More hours on the Kicker power trainer
Just longer sleeves. SC isn’t too cold :D
More trainer workouts with trainerroad
Zwifts new workout mode is paying off already as I look out the window at Storm Barney, as named by the UK Met office. 80mph winds, not a problem with Zwift :-)
Adjust? HA! Nope, I just throw on the layers and try to be back home before pitch black evening hits the east coast.
I don’t change much, I just sweat a bit less :-)
I will try to shift my rides from morning and evening towards the middle of the day, so that I get to use as many of the limited day hours as possible. This liberty is one of the big advantages of life as an exchange student…
Mix it up in the gym and layer up
Add more clothes! And maybe move the cycling to the trainer and out of the snow.
Just a add a few more layers and keep at it.
clothes really
I don’t change my training scheme, except me bike trainings are not always oudoors.
I will have to run and ride indoors for the Chicago winter. I always like to add my weightlifting and bjj in the mix of training.
I will be setting up the trainer in the garage and still running in the cold. Probably do some skate skiing as well.
Living in Colorado, it’s impossible not to add additional sports in the winter; snow-shoe racing, nordic skiing, fat-biking…. hell, even the running trails are solid with light traction. You say people that live in Hawaii are the lucky ducks. You’re wrong, people that live in Colorado are, as we have variety and constant fun! :)
as long as it is not icy running in the winter is not too bad. Lots of great classes indoors to take advantage of in poor weather.
Depending on how well my neighbours clean their sidewalks, not much will change other than more layers while running!
I may spend a bit more time on the treadmill, but hope to be able to stay outdoors.
Winter means putting on gloves and go for a dark run. Afterwards a hot shower and drinking some tea.
Bundle up and Ride here in Kansas
Love the cold, because lived in Thailand :)
I wear extra clothing for bike riding, road and or trails, as long as temp is above 0c and dry. Otherwise I use an indoor trainer (w/zwift!). At work I am lucky to have a gym where I can do cardio or weights. So I am able to stay equally active summer or winter!
In the winter I do more running outside unless it’s icy. I also do more strength and flexibility training.
More strength, power workouts, and flexibility/mobilty.
In My Winter I Keep Running because I Live in Puerto Rico
Do much of cross country skiing
I’ll put my bike On the Kikcr. And, i’m one of those lucky ducks living in Norway so i can go xc skiing whenever i want (got time)
Reflective gear for running – since it gets dark so early!
For the winter I usually just add a thermal and some gloves – I’m lucky that temperatures don’t go too low where I’m living…..!
For the bike, trainer inside indoors – unless it’s a dry day at the weekend.
I enjoy hanging out in the garage riding in front of a tv. Chicago is way to cold after middle of December!
Every year my running volume plummets as I stick to runs on the treadmill or when I travel to warmer climates. The last few years I have done some of the P90X videos over the winter but this year I am going to start a full up weight lifting program with a much reduced running schedule.
I live in the Northwoods of Wisconsin. With many days of negative temperatures I need to submit myself to the bike trainer, treadmill and a lot of strength training. I bundle up for a run or a ride with fenders on my bike whenever the weather is agreeable. I also get out cross-country skiing as much as I can.
I do several things to adapt my Cycling Training in Buffalo NY (so no to Hawaii)
• Warmer gear and ride outside as weather permits
• Cleanup the basement and setup the trainer, TV, DVD, & things
• Setup my TP & Spinerval accounts
• Switch it up with some Snow Blowing, Strength training, and Elliptical work
Embrace the Snow! Snowshoeing, Skiing, Run & Bike (swim indoors :( though)
In SC, we’re lucky we can train outside all year.
Thanks for the giveaway, Ray!
Well, it is time for some bling bling
I’ll be in the gym more regularly and bundling up when I head outside.
Instead of swimming and playing tennis, I switch to playing squash and yoga!
As PayPal did not work when I entered my first reply, here I go again.
But, not to gain an unfair advantage: Please delete this comment.
Head inside to the basement trainer with TrainerRoad & a movie on the laptop. Cinders & ice keep me off roads in the winter.
Nog changes here. Just keep on running outside and some weights inside.
Living in Thailand, so pretty much the same. Winter is the racing season here, so will be racing as much as I can.
I fall out of my home office chair and crawl over to my home office treadmill :-) The treadmill gets quite a few mentions in my work video conference calls. Most co-workers are convinced it’s a cardboard cut-out.
Headlamp, high-viz yellow hoodie intended for flight line use, and gortex. Or just wait for the weekend to ski.
Will add a few layers for the sub-zero temperature, slower my running pace and biking speed in the snow, but as each year, I will embrace the long winter!
Hi Ray,
I’m in central England, not quite the same as Hawaii! I enjoy the winter months, cold, crisp fresh air doesn’t stop me from heading out for a run, I just put a few more layers on and head out even earlier for a morning run. It’s really beautiful, not many others about so it’s just me and nature :) Thanks for the giveaway
Wake up earlier to get time outside in the daylight before work.
During a winter I’m giving my legs a break.
Adding more strength training, some swimming and XC ski.
I am using the winter time for indoor swimming and bicycling with light during night.
