A November Garmin (Fancy) Fenix3 Giveaway

IMG_9544

It’s somehow already halfway through November, and we’ve lacked a giveaway this month.  Heck, did we even have a giveaway last month? That seems like eons ago.  My bad.

No worries though, I’m here to save the day.  Or at least, save Tuesday.  I’ll be giving you a Fenix3.  But not any Fenix3, one of their newfangled fancy looking Fenix3 watches.  Had I thought this post through a little bit more, I could have put it on Friday, and named it the ‘Fancy Fenix3 Friday Freebie’, but alas – I didn’t think of that until now as I write on the plane.  My mental schedule is set for the week, and here it is.

In any case, they released these ones back a few months ago.  One is more of a leather strap, and the other more womanly with swanky rose gold trimmings.  Though honestly, it’s still kinda a big watch for a woman – so if you’re more petite – I’ll let you downsize and pick some other GPS watch that Clever Training stocks, even if it might not look as pretty and be lacking the flower power.

Since I landed in a snowy place this evening, we’re going to get you thinking about winter. To enter, simply leave a quick comment with an answer to the following:

How do you adapt your training schedule for winter? Do you change sports altogether, or do you happen to be one of those lucky ducks living in Hawaii?

Giveaway closes Friday evening, November 20th at 11:59PM US Eastern Time.

Oh – and by the way – I’m piloting a bit of a new option for folks to support the blog.  Many of you have asked for a way to simply support more directly than via Amazon or Clever Training purchases.  Now you can!  If you become a DCR Supporter™ (no, not really trademarked) you’ll help support things around these parts.  More tangibly though, you’ll get a totally ad-free site.  Although you’ll still have to put up with my occasional rosé wine inspired tech rants.  And pictures of the food I eat.  And my travels.  None of those disappear.

I use PayPal as a processing provider, but you need not have a PayPal account (it takes any credit card).  I don’t store your credit card info, nor do I sell/giveaway your e-mail/info.  But obviously you’re creating an account here to sign-in (so you can be super-special going forward and skip the ads).  But to be SUPER CLEAR – you need not sign-up to enter the giveaway.  As will ALWAYS be the case, my regular giveaways are free to enter.

You can also sign-up for just my newsletter – which is a roughly once a week collection of my posts and a few additional tidbits.  Again, another thing that a gazillion of you have asked for for many years.  Simply hit up the checkbox at the bottom.

With that – thanks for reading, and the support!  And of course, as always, thanks to Clever Training for giving away some really pretty watches!  You can always save 10% with them via the DCR Coupon Code or VIP program.

I live in Valencia (Spain), so I do not need to change my training drastically, only some more trainer

  2. Nick

I move to a trainer indoors, and eagerly await a break in temperature and rain.

  3. Patrick Duranleau

I do a mix of snowshoeing, cyclocross, sufferfest inside and running…

  4. Nuno Simoes

On winter, if its rainning i’ll do my trainning indoor at home or in the gym.

  5. Erko

im the lucky one who lives in a country where is 4 seasons, thats in Estonia. Already waiting for snow so i can start cross country skiing. Besides that running doesnt go anywhere. Thats a sport that you can make all year long. Also some swimming (that in a pool and also in a lake). Norseman 2016 is waiting :)

  6. Last year I moved from Chicago to LA for warmer winter training weather!

  7. Nick Karan

Still sunny and hot so i will continue to run outside as much as i can!!!

  8. Rob

I change to my winter running gear and break out the headlamp.

  9. Jim Buchanan

In Scotland, every day feels like Winter, so a change of shoes to cope with the snow and ice just about covers it.

  10. Brandy

Dress warmly and hope for a dry winter!

  11. Jan

Living in Bangkok, I get to train all year round in hot and humid weather.

  12. Martin Van Doren

The only thing that changes for me is some treadmill running if there happens to be ice on the ground. When training for a spring marathon, you can’t skimp on the mileage just because it’s cold.

  13. pat

No change, man up – it’s only wind and rain (Seattle)

  14. Lee harris

Winter has started here in the UK, nippy 50mph gales…. It’s just a case of gritting your teeth and zipping up your ‘man-suit’! ;)

  15. Rad

I try not to change a lot – simply warmer clothes and reduced pace on slippery ground.

  16. Ben Sims

Off season is all about building a bigger base.

  17. Mike Thayer

When the temps drop here in NC I just put on more layers and keep on.

  18. Frank G2

BRRRRRrrrrrrr- Layers, and an indoor trainer. WV country roads calling me home.

  19. Niels Henningsen

Roadbike put in the Tacx trainer…..MTB for rides in the nearby woods, with varmer clothes !

  20. Brian

I alternate between bike trainer suffering and treadmill interval workouts.

  21. Euan

I mountain bike less and run more. Higher intensity also means less time outside in the horrible weather.

  22. Leg

pretty easy as I live in Sicily, Italy!

  23. I usually do the workouts in the morning to see th sun shinning :)

  24. Tyler

I still train outside as much as possible in the winter even if it means using yaktrax. I rather run in the cold even if its 9 degrees than 80s or 90s. You can always put more layers on but can only take off so much when it’s hot

  25. Spencer Oswald

I am from Seattle and bike to work. Even in the heavy rain I just throw on another layer and go for it. All i need for running/biking in the cold rain is a water resistant running jacket, some running tights, and determination.

  26. Chris McGrew

How do you adapt your training schedule for winter?

winters are fairly mild in Houston, so not a lot of adaptation needed. For sure I back off some and give myself a bit more flexibility if workouts are missed.

Do you change sports altogether, or do you happen to be one of those lucky ducks living in Hawaii?

    Ride 100% throughout the year!

  27. Ryan Jeffery

Winter means time to set up the indoor trainer.

  28. Shawn

Indoors since I am a cold wimp.

  29. Ingo McLean

Time to relook goals of the past year, improve for the next year, get back to muscle strength conditioning and CORE!!!! and incorporate short-hard intervals…. and more lunchtime outdoor training to take advantage of the warmth (need that Vitamin D) and break up my work day. Great time to try new nutrition (transitioning from Infinit to UCan)

  30. Paul Erickson

How do you adapt your training schedule for winter?

Living in the SE US, the cold isn’t too bad. Running is actually easier, so I do bump that up a bit and work on both speed and endurance. For cycling, I have ample cool weather gear so I can continue to ride. I also have a great gym with INCREDIBLE spin instructors.

For swimming, I move it indoors and work on technique. Endurance is a bigger challenge due to the redirection at the end of each pool length though.

Do you change sports altogether, or do you happen to be one of those lucky ducks living in Hawaii?

I also add in weight work and classes like Body Pump to keep it fun. Hawaii? I WISH!!!!!!

  31. Jay

I live in Louisiana – so winter lasts all of two weeks if at all.

  32. Aditi

Bundle up as much as possible, hop on the treadmill or take a spin class/gym when ice gets in my way!

  33. Kerry Morrison

Training for me would consist of some Zwift riding with my buddies locally and across the country. Healthy competition is good and it will prepare me for next season.

  34. Joshua Cohen

I try to keep my regular running schedule up. In NYC all you have to do is layer up and get out the door!!

  35. Nicholas Browne

No outdoor swimming or biking, indoor pools and spin classes. A few more treadmill runs than I would do otherwise but still over 80% running outside.

  36. Justin

    I like fancy!

  37. Ben Burrows

I retire to my sufferfest cave with my DC Rainmaker inspired Wahoo Kickr, and sweat and vomit in my own home…..

  38. Andrew

I switch to full run mode. It’s too rainy in the PNW for riding!

  39. Lukas

Cold and snowy winter is coming here where I live so warmer gear for starts, then indoor activities (gym, swimming pool) and wait till spring :)

  40. Kim Gydemand

I live in Denmark so winter can be pretty tough but i dont change sport. I change clothes and use light.

  41. Randy

I do more work inside on the treadmill & trainer.

  42. Petr Stec

For me the winter means preparing for the spring to start race season. So I add more km than usual and really focus on interval training to gain some speed. :-) Brace yourself, long runs in the dark are coming.

  43. Phil Mills

I’ll be doing most of my bike work on a trainer and may use the track at the gym when the weather gets particularly nasty.

  44. MonicaT

I focus on working on my swimming, which is by far, my weakest (not that I’m any good at cycling or running). Mainly, do drills to improve technique. I also do kickboxing 4 x week to keep my weight in check since I like to indulge more than I should in all the holiday deliciousness.

  45. James Poole

Ironically, I leave my gps watch at home and stress less about distance and time. It’s refreshing and everyone should try it for a month or so. P.s. My 910XT is proving a nightmare atm so the Fenix would be a godsend.

  46. Carlos Heil

Not living in Hawaii so I swim in the gym pool, ride on a trainer in a cold garage and run on a treadmill!

  47. Ravikumar

Here in south of India no changes required for the winter training…if fact we wait for the winters for more rigorous training.

  48. Justin

    Oh golly

  49. Steve Martin

    Work out indoors more often.

  50. Jason K

Do more swimming and pull out all the “cold weather” gear for running (and even biking as long as its not icy out)….I’ll also get out snowshoeing if there is enough snow.

  51. I bike less and run more. I run faster to stoke the furnace hotter.

  52. Hypokris

And actually more interval training using tacx trainer in winter.

  53. Avinoam Swissa

Do more crossfit less cycling. Like to Catch some sunny days here in Israel for a good mtb ride.

  54. Marek

Tough guys don’t care about weather. I’m training a little bit more on the gym (upper parts of my body), that’s all.

  55. mitch dangremond

I retire to my pain cave to toil away in the dark until Spring.

  56. Niek

winter is my recharche time. So no cycling, 1X a week swimming and 2X a run

  57. Kostas

Turbo trainer with Trainerroad and Sufferfest for me

  58. Carlos Cabral

Layers, lots of layers. And switch from swim, bike, run to just bike and run.

  59. Living in Florida I’m excited for the winter. I finally get to get out and run when the sun is up and the humidity isn’t knocking you over and slowing you down. Unfortunately the swim is a different story as that one now sends me inside with all of the others training for early triathlons vying for a lane to train in.

  60. Buny

I’m going to put my road bike and mountain bike into hibernation for the winter and ride in the meantime with my fatbike.

  61. Kevin R.

Just like most people I hunker down inside on the trainer. I also hit the gym more. My Fenix 2 is shit. Gotts to get me that fancy Fenix 3!

  62. Matt

    Lots more trainer time!

  63. Chris Benten

Winter Training: I clean the dust and cobwebs off the trainer and ride in the garage.

  64. Volodymyr

Trainer for me for most of the winter and two weeks in Tenerife to remind me what it’s like to ride outside. :-)

  65. Ernesto De Abreu

During winter Miami gets to the nice temperatures so i’m actually able to workout outside for longer and at anytimeof the day. Just wish we would get more of those cold fronts earlier in the seasons (still in mid 80’s here)

  66. Manuel

    Winter gear. Same routine.
(balls of steel may be required for open water training)

  67. Frank van Santvoord

It’s the other way around for me. I enjoy my trailrunning more during wintertime. All sorts of weather, nightbtrails with mud and/or snow. Let’s go!

  68. Wesley Brown

There’s no such thing as bad weather, only bad gear. Layer up right and head outside as much as possible. I’ve even got studded snow tires on the all purpose bike. But, alas even the dreadmill and trainer see more use on the truly bone chilling days.

  69. Denielle

I still maintain to hike or run despite the rain. Having a the right gear for the weather is a must in the Pacific Northwest! ?

  70. This winter, I plan to switch to skiing, because we moved to a ski town! I am hoping it will replace the biking (it’s basically a series of 10-minute squats) over the winter. When early spring rolls around, I will get back to triathlon training!

  71. Mark

I slow it down, and runs and ride at my z2 hr. Building the foundation up again

  72. Scott

Throwing my hat in: don’t change a thing, live in Florida.

  73. Tommy Nguyen

    The Dreadful Treadmill.

  74. David H

One of the advantages of living in AZ! Get to do (mostly) year round training if wanted!

  75. Andreas L.

More layers when running and when it snows enough, Cross-country skiing.

  76. Joe H

I’ll be riding indoors a lot on my trainer, which is a bit more tolerable now with Zwift.

  77. BH

Weights and trainer. Cold weather sucks

  78. Cindy

During the summer when it’s hot and humid, I workout in the gym. During winter, I go outside. I love running outside after I get off work to de-stress. Weird. I know!

  79. Art

Living in Florida, I transition from morning to afternoon running. Running in 90 degree heat and 90% humidity in the summer isn’t my idea of training.

  80. Jon

I might swap to the turbo for some bike work, but swimming and running stay pretty much the same

  81. Rocky Fennell

It just gets wet in Oregon, so I wear a jacket.

  82. Peter

Not too much change in sports, more a reduction of total training hours because of less long bike rides. Basically warmer clothes and some indoor training gadgets :-)

  83. Adrian

More time on the trainer, but also studded tires on the gravel and mountain bikes for icy and/or snowy conditions to at least get *some* outside bike time. For running no change to routine, just wear winter gear, and no change for swimming.

  84. Paolo A. Spadari

With correct gear running by the lake (Garda Lake, Italy) is still nice so far (coldest 5° C.).
I think I will keep putting layers on till It’s spring again .

  85. Alex

I change sports. I focus more on indoor training like weight lifting, HIT, skiing.

  86. LukeJ

I try to run and ride my bike when the weather is ok, and there are dry roads – to avoid crashes and injuries. Temperature is less important – I try to go out when it’s not below -10 deg Celsius when on bike, and not below -15 when running.

  87. Warren Day

Layers, lots of layers, oh and lights, bright lights

  88. Bill Niquette

When Sugarbush opens this Saturday, the bike goes in the basement and the tele skis go in the trunk! From then on, if I’m outdoors there are probably boards strapped to my feet! Thanks Ray.

  89. Ryan Ravinsky

I change sports altogether. I’m a ski instructor so with my work schedule, my tri training becomes more cross-training. One run, one swim, and one bike a week; all inside. Ugh!

  90. Brent Snodgrass

I hibernate, as in jump on the bike trainer and head to the YMCA for the treadmill. My fastest PRs come off of indoor training during the winter..

  91. James

I live in SE Ontario and I change up some sports. Road cycling switches to indoor Zwift & outdoor mountain biking. Other sports remain unaffected, such as swimming indoors year round.

  92. Josh Wingell

    I ride indoors.

  93. JM

switch from biking to snowboarding/xc skiing

  94. Andy L.

Donwnhill skiing and some skating. Running with more layers, as long as there is not too much snow.

  95. I wish I lived in Hawaii. I live in sunny Buffalo, NY, so yes weather does dictate what I do, when I do and where I do exercise. Sports don’t change, I still swim, bike and run. They just happen mainly inside in the winter months. :-)

  96. Stephanos Ritsi

Not too many changes, it gets dark earlier, so just trying to work runs in during the daylight hours. Plus it rains a lot in the winter so getting mentally prepared to get out the door takes more work

  97. Karl W

I typically bring my training indoors. I put the bike on an indoor trainer and run on treadmills. I focus more on running than biking. If not too cold I’ll bundle up and run outside. I also increase weight lifting and other cross training activities.

  98. Niall gardiner

I don’t massively change it, as I am in uk whilst it gets colder it’s still ok to run most of the time. Had a few falls last few years on ice so I won’t do speed intervals if it is icy especially if it includes going around a tight turn or corner (ripped 2 pairs of tights last year) and my knee!

  99. James Winchester

Lucky enough to be in SoCal, so really just a wardrobe change. Unless El Nino is bad this year…
