It’s somehow already halfway through November, and we’ve lacked a giveaway this month. Heck, did we even have a giveaway last month? That seems like eons ago. My bad.
No worries though, I’m here to save the day. Or at least, save Tuesday. I’ll be giving you a Fenix3. But not any Fenix3, one of their newfangled fancy looking Fenix3 watches. Had I thought this post through a little bit more, I could have put it on Friday, and named it the ‘Fancy Fenix3 Friday Freebie’, but alas – I didn’t think of that until now as I write on the plane. My mental schedule is set for the week, and here it is.
In any case, they released these ones back a few months ago. One is more of a leather strap, and the other more womanly with swanky rose gold trimmings. Though honestly, it’s still kinda a big watch for a woman – so if you’re more petite – I’ll let you downsize and pick some other GPS watch that Clever Training stocks, even if it might not look as pretty and be lacking the flower power.
Since I landed in a snowy place this evening, we’re going to get you thinking about winter. To enter, simply leave a quick comment with an answer to the following:
How do you adapt your training schedule for winter? Do you change sports altogether, or do you happen to be one of those lucky ducks living in Hawaii?
Giveaway closes Friday evening, November 20th at 11:59PM US Eastern Time.
Oh – and by the way – I’m piloting a bit of a new option for folks to support the blog. Many of you have asked for a way to simply support more directly than via Amazon or Clever Training purchases. Now you can! If you become a DCR Supporter™ (no, not really trademarked) you’ll help support things around these parts. More tangibly though, you’ll get a totally ad-free site. Although you’ll still have to put up with my occasional rosé wine inspired tech rants. And pictures of the food I eat. And my travels. None of those disappear.
I use PayPal as a processing provider, but you need not have a PayPal account (it takes any credit card). I don’t store your credit card info, nor do I sell/giveaway your e-mail/info. But obviously you’re creating an account here to sign-in (so you can be super-special going forward and skip the ads). But to be SUPER CLEAR – you need not sign-up to enter the giveaway. As will ALWAYS be the case, my regular giveaways are free to enter.
You can also sign-up for just my newsletter – which is a roughly once a week collection of my posts and a few additional tidbits. Again, another thing that a gazillion of you have asked for for many years. Simply hit up the checkbox at the bottom.
With that – thanks for reading, and the support! And of course, as always, thanks to Clever Training for giving away some really pretty watches! You can always save 10% with them via the DCR Coupon Code or VIP program.

Living in NC, training outside (running) just involves more clothes, and pushes me to a treadmill when there’s ice. I keep saying that I’m gping to swim during the winter, but I still end up running outside in the dark.
Dress warmer, hit the gym more / when the weather is really bad.
There is no such thing as bad weather.
treadmill runs and swiming in indoor pool.
I actually prefer the winter and tend to trail run a lot more in winter. I find that trail running definitely improves my overall fitness more than road running. Pull on those tights and skull cap, and go!
Bike commutes, bundled up runs & some kayaking
a bit less outdoor running
a bit more indoor rowing
a bit more indoor trainer
but this winter first time
a bit more cycling with my brand new cyclocross
Sufferfest for my race bike and mudguards for my commuter
I just wear more/warmer clothes. Winter running is my favorite!
Bike on trainer and running outside
Up here in Minnesota we layer up and complain a wee bit, but ultimately we enjoy what mother nature dishes out. I also mix in ice climbing and other frozen activities in between running.
Currently living in Glasgow, its already hitting 0, more time spent in the gym and indoor pool working on strength and form. The cycling group i am in would also start having our own spin classes 1-2 times a week.
Living in south Florida, indoor pool due to rough surf conditions in the ocean, more trainer for the bike due to the clueless snowbird drivers, and maybe a long sleeve shirt for runs.
More indoor rides. First year of trainerroad and loving it. Otherwise i will try to go to the gym more often… running is not a problem – I manage by doing lunch runs now :).
Living in Canada means adapting by buying All.The.Winter.Gear. :-(
In winter I run on my treadmill with good music or a TV show.
I am not a lucky guy who happens to live in Hawaii, but I love running enough not to care about temperature in winter.
I change roadbike to 29er and spandex to goretex. Snowy winter months are exellent time to build up muscle at the gym. Othervise training stays pretty much the same.
Cycloross tires on the bike, sheet metal screws in the shoes. Wear layers.
Less cycling, more running. That’s about it really. Running in the rain always seems so much less hassle than cycling in the rain. Less kit to dry out, and it is not as though the UK ever gets all that cold so as long as you run fast enough you stay warm…
I head to the pool when streets here in DC are icy. I just do some kick laps with a board. I don’t like pool sessions but it’s a good workout.
Trainerroad and goretex windstopper for the occasional outside adventure in Canuckistan.
Just keep on running all year round regardless of temperature. The cold temps aren’t an issue, but the ice is a problem.
No change, the weather in the UK isn’t that bad. As I’m away from home more it does mean I run more than normal and always have my max km running in December.
Dig out the headlamp and get more creative with running routes to avoid busy areas in the dark.
Live in DC suburbs, additional layers and trail shoes as long as there isn’t too much snow.
Winter time is ski time! (ski-touring, cross country and alpine skiing)
i don’t change too much my plan. i wear thicker clothes. and maybe i skip a workout from time to time, or keep them short, because in Germany gets dark damn early.
You mean, you’re supposed to modify your training for the Winter?
In the winter I tend to focus a bit more on my eating & drinking skills, with some running to counter the negative aspects ;). And a week worth of skiing of course.
I’m lucky to live in Los Angeles, so I’ll throw on some more layers and head outside!
As it happens, we are coming into summer down here in the southern hemisphere, however, in winter I add thermals to my outfit.
Here in Seattle I up the strength, and balance work as my miles dip some.
Just thinking about layering up as it was way cooler this morning
No changes to the training routine at all – the changes are more for post training (longer, hotter showers to try and warm up again etc.).
Add more layers and try not get too hot or too cold… sometimes I get it just right and other times I don’t. Always seems a challenge to get it just right on the bike…
I live in Dubai… so there is no real winder here…
Scotland. Perversely, less quality turbo work and apply rules 5 and 9 on the bike for long base miles.
Oh, and no more swimming in the lochs.
Train outside until it is under 20F. Then it is treadmill.
Is move to California a possiblity?
Run more :)
I always try to do the training in the morning hours – the feeling of the hot shower afterwards is something you’ll never get in summer!
I live in Brazil, no winter for me … NEVER!
put on more clothes for the exercise ;-)
I will concentrate on strength / stability / flexibility workouts in the gym. Actually I enjoy CrossFit almost as much as triathlon.
We are told a mild winter will happen in Chicago this year. But when it’s bitter I head indoors.
More swimming and running)
More Indoor swimming, layers for bike
More time at the gym
My training doesn’t change for the winter. I dress for the cold and snow. I might run on a different day if the conditions are icy, but that doesn’t happen often.
Suck it up and carry on whatever the weather
Boston here. Running goes pretty much as usual. Cycling only on a trainer and no OWS.
I switch from biking to running as the weather gets colder … gotta be outside!
Also, you should take a look at Patreon as another option to support the site. I’m not affiliated with them, but do use it to support a few of my favorite blogs. (sadly I doubt you’ll see this with 1.5k entries and counting … worth trying though)
just more clothes
I just put on the thick tights and head out the door.
Winter tends to see me running shorter but faster runs, mainly to keep warm.
I’ve just cancelled the gym membership as well so it’ll be outdoors all winter.
Gym. Lifting, calisthenics and cycling.
Cross country season already started, no worries for the form over winter.
In Vegas the winters are bad enough to not warrant getting outside still!
Lots of Treadmill & Bike Trainer for me. I do still try to get outside once a week once we are in the heart of the winter though.
Wait for the ice to clear from the bike lanes, usually only takes a couple of days after a storm and backcountry skiing works as the most fun workout you can do
Less cycling, rest some more. I also like to ski
Perfect time to hit more swimming in the pool and do some serious core stuff by weightlifting. SkiErg is my favourite for winter time among cross country skiing here in Finland. Next tri comp on August 2016.
Petteri
i don’t change much, just dress a bit warmer
I tend to run more in the winter, because hear affects me more than cold. Then again, I live near San Francisco so cold is a relative term.
It’s mild enough year round where I am, so I don’t have to do much of anything different. Maybe a little warmer clothes on the coldest days!
Here in New England (US) I still ride all year, but a majority unfortunately occurs indoors. I typically ride 5 days, but 3-4 are on the trainer or rollers, only venturing out into the cold when the streets are rideable (temperature doesn’t matter too much).
Some totally different sports come into play like cross country skiing and ice skating on the sea. Oh yea, and studded tires to the bike!
Lunchtime runs so I can at least see the sun. And more time on the turbo!
The training schedule doesn’t change so much, but some of the shorter runs are indoors on a track. The long runs are still outdoors…sometimes with a wind chill of -40 C…and then afterwards we all huddle around the hot chocolate…
I personally enjoy changing between my winter and summer sports giving me different training regimes through out the year. Currently finishing NFL but live in Australia.
Put my big boy tights on and run. A lot. until it drops below 0 degrees farenheit. Then its treadmill time.
I just sweat a LOT less and run a lot further / faster. Living in Houston means August runs are 95F / 35C with 95% humidity. I’ll crawl along at 9 minute miles for 2-3 miles before I give up. Winter means 8 minute miles and / or 5+ mile runs.
So that’ll be the Kickr and treadmill then
Swimming stays the same but cycling drops down to about 1/4-1/3 of summer. And yep, HI would be fine!
I do more weight lifting and just dress a little warmer. Overall the winters where I live allow for training year round without too much hassle.
Running and nordic skiing.
Will go skiing of course!
Going on the treadmill instead out outside until it warms up
Well, as the first snow fell yesterday, I’ll most likely switch it up to cross country skiing in stead of running – and then spend a bit more time in the gym, lifting heavy sh*t to prevent injuries.
Primarily a cyclist, I do less riding and more running in the winter.
everything depend on weather. But in general i wear warmer clothes and scale back the distance.
Winter bike for riding outdoors when it’s salty and slushie, if it’s too much of a snowy mess I’ll be Zwifting on the trainer.
As the winters have been very mild for last few years, i don’t change my running schedule at all. I believe it’s because of Murphy’s law and the fact that i bought cross country skis on that one last snowy winter..The first and last winter i got to use them more than once. I have no problem running in sub zero temperatures while it’s not too extreme, like -20 celsium, i just put more layers on, switch to wool socks in my minimal running shoes and do a little warmup inside.
I still put my bike down for the winter tho. Since one serious fall on ice a few years ago, i decided that it’s not worth risking injuries and also it saves the bike from the nasty salt and chemicals they put on the streets.
I live in the southern USA, so nothing changes for me!
even better in winter in the sunny Israeli weather
More or less it’s the same. I run outside, do my swim, but only the bike is inside on the trainer. Also I will skip some training for strength training.
No real change, apart from more running and a bit less cycling.
Training stays the same, pretty much. Just put up with the cold, wet and dark in the UK!
In the warmer weather I was running at 4 am on work days and doing a long run Saturdays at 6 am — now my weekday runs get move to evenings after work or into the gym on a treadmill with the long runs staying on Sat. but moving a bit later — hate having to use a headlamp but it’s necessary with the crazy South Jersey drivers — after completing a half later this week I will be beginning a full marathon training program which should make the winter months interesting while trying to get some indoor cycling and strength training done at the gym.
I ride the trainer and do interval runs on the treadmill if icy and below 0.
I don’t really change my fitness schedule. I simply bundle up a bit more. Haven’t found a reason to stop biking in Northern Virginia.
I do less cycling and play rugby in a social club during the winter.
Living in Florida and winter just makes it nicer to train outside. Not too warm or humid anymore, just need a long sleeve jersey.
In London, cycling is still fun until you hit about 4 degrees. Then I drop back on the cycling and up on the running and cross fit. I keep swimming constant throughout (yay heated pools). I actually really enjoy hitting cross fit some more and building up strength and having a change.
A couple of weeks of skiing don’t hurt either!
I rowed rather than rode on the road.
Can’t wait for winter for cross-country skiing season.
i dress a bit warmer:)
Mostly move indoors, as most outdoor sports can get quite dangerous with the snow and ice and I’m not a big skier. That said, I prefer going outside if the weather allows it.
I don’t have to get up at 4 am for a bike ride to finish before it gets 100 outside here in beautiful AZ.
