It’s giveaway time! Partly because it’s been a while, partly because it’s Friday and it seems fitting, and partly just cause I’m on vacation and this seemed a whole lot easier than writing an in-depth review.
This time I’m giving away a Garmin Fenix3 multisport watch, sponsored by Clever Training. It’s the only watch I brought with me on vacation (yes, I know, only one watch – incredible!)
So how do you enter?
Simple: All you need to do is write a comment below with what type of training (or I suppose racing) you typically do on vacation. Do you cut back, or press on as per the schedule? Or does all training just simply shift to eating ice cream and chocolate bonbons?
The winner will get to choose any Fenix3 variant from Clever Training. This could be the base grey one (seen middle in photo above), or the more swanky Sapphire unit with the metal link strap. And then you can get it with or without the HR strap. Totally your choice!
As usual, Clever Training is sponsoring the giveaway. Remember you can save 10% off anything they sell through either the coupon code or the DCR/CT VIP program, plus of course free US shipping for goods over $75US.
Thanks for reading!
The giveaway entry period will run through Monday, April 27th, 2015 until 11:59PM US Eastern Time. Winner will be selected randomly. One entry per person. The product will then be ordered immediately and shipped immediately, assuming in stock.

SBR whenever I can on vacation, maybe not as hard.
Running. And playing with the kids. And stairs of course, always live high above the beach.
Hiking and long walks.
Vacation training is no training:) Drinking coctails and a lot of food – that’s my main activities. But maybe dancing counts?
Holiday training usually involves a rigorous schedule of food, drink, relaxation and sleep.
I prefer to relax but have some running and trx at morning time to prevent lose of fitness. And it depends of what training goals are intercept on vocation time too. Peace!
Hiking/running is the best way to explore somewhere new. Sometimes I’ll do a race if the timing works out.
Running or swimming in the pool
Morning run.. Exploring other side of the place.
Since I typically, do not travel with my bike when I fly, vacation is the time I spend getting some decent running done. Sometimes it makes me wonder why I switched to being such a cyclist with the infinitely larger amount of gear required…
i run to explore and hard stuff turns into fartleks. Plus yoga!
Run explore. If the wife lets me!
It usually degenerates to less training, more beer… Swimming and biking becomes zero, but I still try to get in a few good runs. It can be refreshing to run in a different country and if you’re lucky, in a nice cool climate.
Most vacations I walk in the mountains.
This year I planed 1 day a race in the mountain, the rest of the days probably rest.
no rules…
chillin if days are active…
otherwise an early morning 5+ K would do…
Cut out the structured training, more fun stuff like mountain biking and hiking.
Diet usually goes out the window.
My husband and I love to hike and bike on our vacations. Maybe not structured training but still training!
I try to run as much as possible when I’m on vacation: nice easy runs to keep my head clear.
Usually I pick up the pace on vacation to make up for all of the time I missed during my daily life! Sucks but it’s the most free time I’m going to get!
Lately, we try to aim vacations where and when I can find a race.
I like to take advantage of whatever location I’m enjoying, which usually means focusing on one sport (running, biking, or swimming).
Vacation time tends to end up with running more than cycling as I don’t travel with the bike..
I generally race to the buffet
We rented a place in Ocean City, NJ last year which was w/in walking distance of the high school track. We did a lot of circuits with sprints and body weight exercises. We also used the bleachers for pull-ups and to run stairs. There was also an area that had tables and benches which we used to practice some OCR stuff.
Vacation is a good time to add some new sports into play! But otherwise routines are not that fixed as during work weeks…
I ride or swim when I can
Definitely try to get some running in on vacation! Along with some extra, non-training activity (SUP, diving). Would love to use the Fenix3’s navigational features and mapping – I love having the confidence of knowing I’m not lost!
On vacation the only racing I do is to the fridge to get a beer!!
I try to relax as much as possible on vacation. Exercising can wait until I return home.
Workouts definitely continue as vacation provides a new scene to enjoy the outdoors.
I always pack my Hokas but they never seem to leave my bag when I travel on vacation. But I will continue to take them non the less.
My guy-trips with friends are usually backpacking in one of the national parks in the western U.S. Hike until mid-afternoon then set up camp and explore.
My family vacations are usually somewhere flat and beachy. Running before the kids get up is a must. Then it’s snorkeling and playing in the waves.
I usually end up getting more workouts in when on vacation because there are less demands no my time. This only works when we vacation at the beach and the main activity for the week is sitting watching the water roll in.
Press on! I don’t feel rushed while working out on vacation.
Press on but cut back a little. I try to get about 30 miles of running in.
When I am on vacation I always run. It is so easy to pack the running gear. I will also throw in a swimsuit and goggles in case there is a decent pool. And if there is open water then I will swim every day. This is often a rare opportunity given that I live in the Northeast. I only bring the bike if I am able to drive to the destination. I adjust my schedule according to what the location has to offer.
Usually I have more time to rest on vacation so I like running very much
I usually keep up my training on vacation, but often try to make it a cutback week.
None, unless I’ve planned something really difficult for not long after, in which case I will grudgingly hit the treadmill or stationary bike.
Thanks, as always, for the awesome giveaway.
Most often we take backpacking or vacations where hiking is involved. Otherwise yoga, Trx and running and of course major naps!
I like easy running so on my global heatmap I can remember the vacation!
Assuming I can only workout on vacation… workout as if my life depended on it.
Well, when we travel it’s usually with kids so corralling them is a pretty good workout, but besides that we hit the hotel fitness center and utilize whatever they have.
Normally, I would always bring my running gear as running is the easiest to do just about anywhere or most likely my hotel would have a gym, although I admit to enjoying more food, I will do my best to balance it out with a quick run :) the biking and swimming will have to wait when I get home.
In my suitcase I will always pack my running shoes and a TRX for some strength and balance training. I usually run more often on vacation and longer to be able to see more of the location.
I definitely like going for a run on my vacation. That’s a great way to explore new areas in a different way.
I always bribg with me my running shoes and what I need for running: I get relaxed with it
I cut back in training whilst on holiday. Don’t get me wrong, I run when on vacation, but I don’t necessarily hit all my workouts. Nothing better than running to see a different country.
Always have good intentions and pack all of my gear, but it always seems hard to do much while on vacation mode.
Zumba interval training !!!
On vacations I use to go early to cycle or run, as rest of family likes to sleep more than usual. When finishing some real town bread and croissants to have a good breakfast all together
I try and press on but never get all my scheduled workouts in.
Gotta run. Pretty much every morning. Too much eating out to not do anything.
Well, on vacation we do a lot of walking, hiking and biking!
On vacation I usually try running some new routes and get lost in the woods.
Either i am on vacation or not.
Holiday time is about riding my enduro bike on the nicest place as possible and forgetting about Watts, intervals and hill repeats
I usually bring my running gear and do short runs whenever. No serious training. Just enough to stay active.
I always pack my gear to continue with my plans but some how 2lbs of bacon (darn buffets) and 26 degree Celsius temperatures always foil my plans about 2 or 3 km into said workout :) But none the less I continue to try to improve my behavior on every trip
I stopped competing due to a knee problem and last summer was the first holiday over some years when I did not frantically plan my travel and time management to include training. It was tough to even find space for all the gear when going somewhere with 3 kids. Now I mostly take it easy while on vacation, eg going hiking, biking etc with the kids rather than leaving them behind and trying to squeeze in a quick run or not so quick biking.
Half the fun of going somewhere beautiful is planning the run! The other half is the post run relaxation activities.
I run 5 to 10km every morning just so I can eat and drink anything I want for the rest of the day!
Love to run to see the sights when on vacation.
I’m starting to get in shape again (similar to your story, Ray – didn’t do much for a few years) and am combining weight training, running and hiking (in the Austrian mountains, who wouldn’t go for a hike?!). To somewhat keep up that regimen during vacation I usually pick out routes around my destination on MapMyRun and do YAYOG exercises in the hotel room.
TL;DR: running and bodyweight exercises, as much as my daily schedule allows.
Vacation – Explore new places on my run. Usually cut back on the kilometers.
Keep on training as per usual schedule as I have to keep the momentum and motivation to keep my body fit.
Vacation is time off, I’ll make it up when I get home.
Walking, unless I’ve taken my bike, in which case cycling.
Taking every chance I get when it comes to findings new paths in foreign places!
Wow, the Fenix 3 would keep me from having to take two watches on vacation, because training never stops.
On vacation I still stay very active, but usually the type of exercise changes to hiking, backpacking, and whitewater canoeing…something were I get to enjoy the local scenery best. Also really like to drink local beer- so need to burn calories to offset!
Long runs are my thing in vacation!
Some running, some HIIT, some crossfit, a little bit of everything as possible.
On vacation, if possible, I swim, bike and run. Then, I come here and read about your adventures :)
Vacation is vacation. A time to relax mind, body and soul.
Training destinations are vacations! They are my escape from the same old trails cause sometimes life without mountains just won’t do. Go Explore!
Uo early and smash out a run, bike.or swim. Back in time before the Missus has got up and ready for the cool down ;)
Heavy weight lifting. Just substitute the weights with a pint of beer and big steaks.
I am also a North American expat in Europe (precisely, a Canadian living in Brussels). My husband and I continue to run on vacations but use these opportunities to see things we might otherwise miss on our travels. So, for example, in the past month we ran extensively through the Nature Reserve in Fuerteventura — 7 kms at a time. We had a great Sunday morning run from our hotel to and through the Parque Juan Carlos I in Madrid. And we are constantly hiking in our travels.
We don’t let running take over our vacations. We just use them to see things from an entirely different perspective than what we would have seen them otherwise.
During holidays I enjoy swimming and some biking, but without ambitious goals.
While vacationing, it’s easy running and/or cycling to soak in the surroundings for me. No training agenda to chase.
Well, i plan to exercise, and i get out once. But then i live on that runners high for the rest of the vacation. No sad feelings in the sun!
Running is my favorite way to see somewhere new. One of my favorite long runs was through Zion National Park in the morning before it was open to vehicle traffic.
I normally do lots of extra swiming if its a beach holiday. Always try to get a run or two in as its a good way to get lost and explore. I have also been lucky enough to ride the rapack in Marin county and a trail in Moab. Being from the UK both rides are unforgettable.
So basically I just do what ever I can.
Thanks.
I’m mainly a runner and I’m ADD. So regardless I’ll go for 1 or more runs and look at all the pretty things.
Normally I try to change my training up enough around a vacation to lighten the load but if I can’t I try to stick to the plan.
I usually take it up a notch during vacation. Different places, new sights makes for more interesting training!
I plan to rest a lot.
And maybe go out to run….
Usually try to do a local 5k …. if none available go out for “adventure” run making up the route as the view provides and perhaps a few laps in the pool depending on time of year and vacation location!
I squeeze in a run between pina colladas.
My training usually takes a back seat while on vacation. More often than not, I end up eating more lobster rolls than the number of times I run. However, we still stay active with family hikes, family canoe paddles and countless trips to the floating dock in the lake! Enjoy your vacation DCRAY!
Vacation, is just … vacation. triathlon schedule goes out of the window. Occasionally I do a run and swim a bit, but that’s it.
Depends on vacation type, but earlier my workouts are completely stopped, because there was no time (but a lot of walking usually). Recently I try to get a few runs.
In Juni I go in Greece Windsurfing and Mountain biking in January I usually gi sking in France.
try to do instead of 60 miles at least 80 miles per week and despite of it having fun….
I always try to run wherever I go. It’s a great way to see what’s around you. I like to collect Garmin Connect maps of new places too!
Thanks Ray!
My last holiday was in Cape Town over Easter weekend. You can’t go to Cape Town over Easter without running Two Oceans Marathon!
Usually easy/long runs on vacation. Depends also on the schedule of upcoming competitions.
I still run daily as my family goes on vacation especially if there is a upcoming race.
Generally I try to go to the gym.
I practice the fine art of drinking the exact amount of wine with the main, noon meal, that still lets me go for a late afternoon run!
Normally on my vacation I use the hotel gym or go on a 30 min jog outside. If I’m on a business trip, then it’s weights or bodyweight exercises due to lack of spare time.
