The DCR’s on Vacation Fenix3 Giveaway!

IMG_7145

It’s giveaway time!  Partly because it’s been a while, partly because it’s Friday and it seems fitting, and partly just cause I’m on vacation and this seemed a whole lot easier than writing an in-depth review.

This time I’m giving away a Garmin Fenix3 multisport watch, sponsored by Clever Training.  It’s the only watch I brought with me on vacation (yes, I know, only one watch – incredible!)

So how do you enter?

Simple: All you need to do is write a comment below with what type of training (or I suppose racing) you typically do on vacation.  Do you cut back, or press on as per the schedule?  Or does all training just simply shift to eating ice cream and chocolate bonbons?

The winner will get to choose any Fenix3 variant from Clever Training.  This could be the base grey one (seen middle in photo above), or the more swanky Sapphire unit with the metal link strap.  And then you can get it with or without the HR strap.  Totally your choice!

As usual, Clever Training is sponsoring the giveaway.  Remember you can save 10% off anything they sell through either the coupon code or the DCR/CT VIP program, plus of course free US shipping for goods over $75US.

Thanks for reading!

The giveaway entry period will run through Monday, April 27th, 2015 until 11:59PM US Eastern Time.  Winner will be selected randomly. One entry per person. The product will then be ordered immediately and shipped immediately, assuming in stock.

  1. I typically bring my bike and try to ride when I go on vacation whenever feasible. If there is a pool available I try to get in some laps as well. The training is more touristy in these situations (enjoying the new sites, not pushing quite as hard), but I’ve seen some fantastic destination trails and rides this way that I likely wouldn’t have experienced otherwise.

  2. Rick Holland

Running, walking, and a modified version of P90X.

  3. Andrew smith

Training continues as scheduled!! However, daily diet is thrown asunder for hedonistic desires.

  4. Jeff Taylor

I usually try to get a few miles each morning on the beach!!!

  5. Patrick

Hiking or Running, always with Strava.

  6. Smokin'Schwalbes

I fit in training in whatever capacity I can whilst on vacation whether that be running, cycling, indoor/outdoor swimming or even kayaking. One thing I always find time to do when I’m away is become a parkrun ‘tourist,’ though I suppose I would do with my being an Event Director of one :-)

  7. Farhan Hummayun

I already have made up mind that I will be taking part in the Shanghai Marathon in November.
So I will be starting my holidays from may and I will be getting ready for the Marathon.

  8. Ivan

Depends on holidays, but normally at the seaside, a long run before having breakfast, some openwater swimming, and some tempo running before dinner or, if possible, one or two long rides with a rented bike…

Let’s see if I can use the Fenix 3 in my next holidays!!

  9. chris

Running or Swimming. It depends on the vacation.

  10. Warren

If I’m at my parents I fix up my old road bike and join some of the local lads. Otherwise I always have my jogging shoes with me. As the only training gadgets I have are attached to my road bike at home, it will be useful to have a (portable) watch to track my stuff.

  11. Paul R.

When on vacation I like to run and then post to Strava.

  12. Reinier

As I live in the Netherlands where everything is flat on holidays I like to do some hilltraining

  13. Karin

I like to stay active when it is a “vacation” to visit the family with a good local gym at my parents and decent options at the in-laws. I always have my garmin with me in either case.

  14. rytis

    early run, late beer :)

  15. Antonio

I often travel through out South East Asia, and one of the things I look forward to, is looking for interesting and scenic places to run. Running on vacation seems to help me stay on schedule, and acclamate me to my surroundings.

  16. Dawn M.

Most of our family vacations involve a lot of hiking, so I don’t do a lot of extra training when we go. But if I do, I’ll usually just go for an easy run.

The Fenix 3 would be great for all that hiking :)

  17. Seth

Our vacations usually switch to fun mode. Exercise is found in the activities that we do while away; hiking, skiing, swimming, etc.

  18. Don

Typically running to the brunch buffet.

  19. Well, as I’m so lucky to be born in Denmark, which I’m glad, it does however mean I struggle to find any hills or mountains.
As a matter of fact, our highest point is only around 150meters above sealevel. Thats why on vacation, I mostly visit countries with more spectaluar views – mountains, big oceans etc. I’d love to my hiking alongside the lovely Felix 3 watch.

Thanks for a great blog and awesome reviews as well.

  20. Mark

    Early morning runs to explore.

  21. Nick O'Kane

I like to train on laying as still as possible and relaxing while on vacation.

  22. TheGerman

    Running wherever I am

  23. Sean Morse

I usually have big plans to carry on as usual. Then I’m too tired, don’t train how I wanted, then get depressed.

  24. IndyMTB

We travel out west from the flat lands of the Midwest usually. Its vacation! I train wherever my son and daughter take me. From a pain perspective, my daughter is on a cross country team in college so not much “going easy”. Usually it is a run or ride with elevation in Breckenridge, Moab, Durango, Boseman, etc. so even though I didn’t train as far or as hard, I feel great when I get back down from elevation.

  25. Per

I love to run when on holliday. It’s the perfect chance to explore new trails. The next trail trip will be in the German Harz land

  26. eric buchakjian

12 oz curls. Multiple sets, high reps.

  27. Janna McGiles

When I do get a chance to go on vacation (2 kids in college) I love to run wherever we go and explore the area. I try to stick to my training plan loosely:). Would love a watch to record my adventures.

  28. Jimmy Dunn

I normally keep up with my training plan that I develop the month before. Sometimes I’ll go on vacation for the purpose of training in the mountains. It’s pretty flat where I live in Michigan. Either way, I’d love to replace my aging Nike GPS watch with something newer and capable of picking up a heart rate monitor’s (like maybe the Mio Link) signal.

  29. Ben

Recently, on an epic car trip, I’ve just been hauling my Trek Madone around on the back of the car.

  30. Eric Mitchell

On vacation my training consists of working on my endurance at the buffet line.

  31. mmb

Depends where and who I’m travelling with. More than likely it’s a few easy runs early in the morning.

  32. Piyush

Go running in the morning, the best way to explore the new place

  33. Cchin

I like to run on vacation exploring new places.

  34. Daniel Paetta

I love to hike on my vacations!

  35. Keith Lacey

Next vacation is Ironman Barcelona! Great to have Fenix with me ;-)

  36. Steven

My wife, kids and myself combine vacation with races and exploring new areas. This weekend we’re racing the Whiskey 50 Off-road in Prescott AZ.

  37. When on vacation, it’s a challenge. My kids are young, and the idea of helping my wife relax usually does not equate to me saying “I’m off for a 10 hour bike ride, honey; you have fun with the kids in the new space!”. So, I fit in what I can when I can and as much as I can. Running is always quick and easy.

  38. dcg1963

I usually cut back a bit. Next vacation is Colorado, so I’ll try to get in some hikes & short trail runs.

  39. Jeff Jordan

run to ice cream with kids

  40. Luca Anceschi

    Windsurfing untill exhaustion!!! ;)

  41. Andre

On vacation is when I have more time to myself so I try to stick to my regular cardio sessions + I get to add resistance training or I make sure to take time to do yoga and stretch.

  42. Andrea

My vacations are a workout –I go backpacking. Hiking all day is great training for other the activities I do.

  43. Tobias

I try to find nice trails and to explore the surroundings, but usually cut back a bit.

  44. Popov Grigoriy

    Hello everyone!

On a vacation I usually run. It is a way to see other cities. Very unusual for me — I remember these moments. It became my secret and a habit.
I ran on Malta, Vienna, Majorca, Copenhagen

  45. Shannon

Vacation means vacation! I can do whatever I want, eat whatever I want!

  46. Karl Krause

Run and eat, in varying proportion.

  47. Jan Aniolek

Vacation is eating like crazy and then running like mad to get rid of remorse..

  48. Joe

I don’t vacation, but if I’d get the opportunity to do so, it’d be cycling. :)

  49. Andy c

Holidays usually involve bikes somewhere, either touring holidays, or hire some where ever we are, gotta love biking in different parts of the world

  50. Scott Kennedy

When I’m on vacation I don’t typically let up on my running, because it’s easy to bring my gear and find a route. Swimming is hit or miss. Biking depends on where we’re going and if it’s by car. Bon-bons are a must either way.

  51. Frank

On vacation, I’ll typically squeeze in running and swimming. At Zion National Park recently, did canyoneering and various hikes instead.

  52. michael

DCR – thanks for all the work you do to bring us these reviews. You’re my go-to source for training tech! My vacations are usually mtbiking destination trips, so my home training prepares me so I can thoroughly enjoy the trips. Thanks again!!

  53. Kevin McMahon

Always try to do everything I can, but definitely runs get done since it’s so easy. Bike not so much.

  54. Matt H

Hah, travelling usually means trying to contain 3 boys under 10 somewhere – so most working out involves keeping up with them.

So not a whole lot of actual training, outside of occasional hikes to try and run them down…

  55. Geebee

Normally can’t get away from ice cream, particularly when with kids. This year maybe we’ll press in though..:)

  56. jess

Cut back on scheduled/planned training, but enjoy active vacationing (hiking/biking/snorkeling, etc) and spontaneous runs where I let myself get lost in new cities.

  57. Ng Wei Tuck

Travelling means opportunity to run new routes!

  58. Ed Parks

I squeeze in whatever I can!

  59. Roger

I love running on vacation, seeing new things and different parts of cities that you wouldnt usually see. Same with biking, but it always a little harder to take the bike.

  60. MoMo

When I’m on holiday, I do no training whatsoever.

  61. Ritchie champion

I like to run as it allows me to explore new locations in a personal manner.

  62. Anderl

Trying to stick to my training schedule – never works though :) So I adapt and try to get a few longer runs in.

  63. David

Running is the easiest for racing and training on vacation. I just ran a half marathon PR this morning while on vacation with my family. My wife ran a 5k last night and my kids will do the fun run later today.

  64. Aina

I typically go hiking and rarely run during holidays.

  65. Sascha

I do on my vacations my long runs due to less time on working days!

  66. Daniel

I train my mouth to chew faster… Why yes, make that a full rack of ribs with fries, side of gravy, and a beer!
To me, it’s an all out break mentally and physically. Like everyone else, I’m sure we all work our butts off training and exercising the other 51 weeks of the year :)

  67. Austin Sweatmaker

When on the road for work or for vacation I try to incorporate what is unique about the area into my training. For instance a recent trip to Big Bend NP yielded an excellent opportunity for elevation and altitude training. I find travel as an excellent way to training enjoyable and a way to stay out of a rut.

  68. da_fox

    I train even harder!

  69. peejers

Running is the easiest to make work. Now I am thinking of places to take my bike.

  70. CH3

I always bring running and swimming gear, but excuses seem to crop up more while traveling.

  71. Bernardo

Swim, bike, run and have fun with friends and family..!

  72. Carlos Martinez

Ideal travel exercise; 3 mile run near the beach, followed by a 5-10 miles bike ride.

  73. Yeo Zhen Ning

If I’m on a vacation, i would love to trek a local trail or hike up a mountain to take in the scenery.

  74. MTB Keith

Riding my Mountain Bike every day I can!

  75. Dag

    Run. Eat. Eat. Eat. Run…

  76. tony Quinlan

Train hard before, eating ice cream and chocolate bonbons, train hard after!

  77. Jpj

Running and biking early in the morning

  78. lukej

on vacation i do most of my racing – be it running or biking. This sunday i run a marathon:)

  79. Mike

Run, run, hike, run, bike, climb, hike & bike, run, climb, hike

  80. Martin

Most of the time Running, but if possible sometimes Biking and hiking.

  81. Marko Milojevic

Token run or two to make me feel better about all the “carb loading” :)

  82. Tom

Holidays are just an excuse to skip work and go training instead. Everyday is long training day, youhou

  83. Andrew

    Swimming, running and ice-cream training.

  84. Bernard

When I go on vacation the chocolate ice cream comes out

  85. Vacation runs are for me, a more relaxed run. After all, that’s what vacations are for, right?

  86. Yurii

Usually running orienteering events. Sometimes do bike trips.

  87. Mike stevens

Vacation is a time when work schedules don’t my interfere with fun and exercise/training. It’s great! Little run, fun swim and some spinning if available.

  88. Guy Florack

The morning run is the standard when on vacation. Swimming in open water comes in second and biking usually gets done on spinning bikes :(. In combination with kitesurfing and lots of sleep usually causes me to return fit ready to pick up regular training.

  89. Leonardo

Activity depends on the vacation location. In Europe I always cycle. In the Caribbean I always run during my vacation.

  90. Tetiana

In most cases i spend holidays in the places with interesting and challenging routes for road cycling

  91. Since I started to run 2.5 years ago I plan my vacations based on the marathons, half marathons and other races I found on the cities and countries I plan to visit. My best travel souvenir now is a medal: small, full of anecdotes, easy to carry on airplanes, etc. During the race you see the locals and their city and share their enthusiasm and culture. After the race your appreciation for their food and local ingredients increase exponentially. I’m sorry I started to run so late in life and I do’t have time to run in the +130 countries already visited. But let’s not loose time, let’s travel and run some more!

  92. Chris

I like running in new places.

  93. Carl Helander

Vacation is always more training for me. Great way to shift my mind into vacation mode, simply get out running!

  94. Jan Andersson

Running (just did a stunning run in amazing CA wine country) is the easiest to pack for, so that’s my go to. During the winter months, I try to do some functional strength at least once a week, being a bit creative and you don’t even need to find a gym, the hotel room works just fine.

Or if time allows, renting a bike is a great way to get some training in yet see the country side.

  95. Matt

I like to wake up before the family and mix up light work outs run 3 miles or light pool swimming since it is vacation.

  96. ng s w

On vacation i will try to squeeze in a few runs.

  97. Kaz

I go sailing if I can and running when I can’t :) Apart from that – playing with the kids is an endurance sport in it self.

  98. hollyoak

Vacation time means more time for training and/or racing! Worst I’ve done is running uphill after a full day of skiing…rough ;-)

  99. Benjamin Blizard

Treadmill training : 3x mile intervals day after day until the legs give out. When I’m seriously on vacation, I can’t avoid taking multi-day breaks from working out, so that can be a while. Plus, minimal equipment necessary, and the hotel nearly always supplies the treadmill.

  100. WILLIAM HAMILTON

I don’t train for serious performance/competition, I train so that when I do go on vacation and/or travel for work, I can eat like a pig. But I only travel about 10 times a year for short spurts.
