It’s giveaway time! Partly because it’s been a while, partly because it’s Friday and it seems fitting, and partly just cause I’m on vacation and this seemed a whole lot easier than writing an in-depth review.
This time I’m giving away a Garmin Fenix3 multisport watch, sponsored by Clever Training. It’s the only watch I brought with me on vacation (yes, I know, only one watch – incredible!)
So how do you enter?
Simple: All you need to do is write a comment below with what type of training (or I suppose racing) you typically do on vacation. Do you cut back, or press on as per the schedule? Or does all training just simply shift to eating ice cream and chocolate bonbons?
The winner will get to choose any Fenix3 variant from Clever Training. This could be the base grey one (seen middle in photo above), or the more swanky Sapphire unit with the metal link strap. And then you can get it with or without the HR strap. Totally your choice!
As usual, Clever Training is sponsoring the giveaway. Remember you can save 10% off anything they sell through either the coupon code or the DCR/CT VIP program, plus of course free US shipping for goods over $75US.
Thanks for reading!
The giveaway entry period will run through Monday, April 27th, 2015 until 11:59PM US Eastern Time. Winner will be selected randomly. One entry per person. The product will then be ordered immediately and shipped immediately, assuming in stock.

I do a variety of workouts from swimming, running, cycling, crossfit on non-racing seasons. Vacations are reserved to relax! But with occasional morning runs or HIIT workouts. Races includes century ride races, half marathons, marathons, triathlons, 70.3s in scenic rave venues!
If I’m on vacation I don’t plan to do any workouts. If they happen, great, but that is a rarity.
I always bring my running shoes on vaca with hopes and dreams of increasing my miles. Alas, I usually end up sipping beers and never lacing them on. :(
I usually cut back about half. The thing I really like is the new scenery you can enjoy while running on vacation – not the same old routes!
If I’ll be on my feet all day I will probably do several sets of 12 oz. curls during the evening.
I cannot wait for vacation. We go camping, and it gives me the time and freedom to go trail running, mountain biking, hiking. ( and yes fishing )
I started running trails last year, and fell in love with it. A GPS watch would do wonders to assist me in improving my performance. ( and who knows maybe even not get lost )
I typically try to stick to my training schedule while on vacation. I find that it usually isn’t too disruptive and it’s a nice way to see the area.
Depends largely on what my current goals are. When I was climbing and mountaineering, vacations were actually to attempt the goal(s) – so those were the focus of the trip. When on work trips (sometimes combined
with vacations) I’ll try to find local walking/running tours, or maybe local hikes and climbs. Either way, a sports
watch with navigation features would really be handy.
none
Try to keep on my normal running schedule. I really like running in new locations.
Small Good Morning pick up bread an butter runs (just long enough to have an energized Start of the day), I add few long distance runs to learn the region by foot.
Cut back…. training impacts my wife/kids enough… win the war lose the battle
I take an annual family trip to the outer banks and do my best to get on my bike every day. Starting in Duck, I’ll ride Noah to the end of the road or south to the lighthouse. It’s beautiful riding, but mind the wind.
Just relax… :)
My training doesn’t stop on vacation. I am more likely to plan my vacations around my running schedule.
I typically push harder on vacation, since I do not have to worry about work.
I typically narrow down my workout to the relevant intervals, and just press on at the hotel gym.
Keep moving as much as possible. Walk a lot. Carry a backpack and go exploring. Enjoy good food but enjoy the land too!
That depends on the type pf vacation. I’ll admit when it’s visiting family, the thought of getting away for a longer than usual run is enticing. As there are rarely enough hours in the week to focus on a solid bike or run workout, vacation time often provide the space and freedom to ramp up.
i try to run everyday
I normally take the sneakers and get in a couple of runs. They don’t take long and you can adjust the pace / course accordingly.
Hi Ray! Love the site. On the rare occasion I do go on vacation I’ll do some slow long easy work. Just enough to maintain.
I continue to run as normal during vacation time.
Relax during vacation
I usually plan my vacations around my races, so I’d say that I race and continue to train while of vacation!
It’s fair to say, I think, that going on holiday means gaining relief from at least some of the tasks and activities that constitute the drudgery of everyday life. It’s not that all of these tasks and activities are intrinsically unpleasant. Cooking, for instance, can be very enjoyable. It can cease to be enjoyable, however, if you are obliged, day after day, to cook for yourself and perhaps for others. So when you go on holiday, you want to eat nice food, but you want someone else to make it for you. Athletic endeavours are sort of like cooking. Chopping onions isn’t fun. More generally, prep work is tedious and no one really looks forward to it. Similarly, no one really looks forward to 12 X 400 on the track. Regardless, people who do such sessions enjoy their running and derive a sense of satisfaction from it. It may even contribute to their wellbeing. If you’re like me, then running dulls the pain of your existence. That being said, training – like cooking – is something that I do routinely.
Now I also think that doing things that one enjoys is partly constitutive of what it means to go on holiday. There are many things that I enjoy, but running is close to the top of my list of enjoyable activities. I therefore have a good reason to continue training while on holiday. But because running is one of the activities that constitutes the drudgery of day-to-day living, I also have a good reason to stop training on holiday. And it seems to me that these are equally valid reasons. Should I just pick one at random (training or not training)? Doing so would not be very satisfying, however, because irrespective of which option I choose, I will have a valid reason to act otherwise.
What if I find a physical activity that (a) is aerobic; (b) gets me outside; (c) can be solitary; (d) is not overly time consuming? An activity, in other words, that’s enjoyable. Doing this activity while on holiday will give me a break from my normal routine AND it will satisfy the requirement that I do something I enjoy. That’s one proposal. Another would be to make my running on holiday radically different from my running at home (trail instead of road, low intensity, no watch, stopping in scenic places etc). This would give me a break from the drudgery AND I would be doing something I love. But which should I choose?
Dcrainmaker has asked a very difficult question.
running (easiest to pack). frequency goes up, duration usually goes down.
Racing Galveston 70.3 on this vacation.
Wow! What did I do on my vacation?? No! What DO I do on my vacation? Now, I’m doing triathlons on my vacations. I’ve done bike tours on my vacation. I love to do walking tours of places I’ve never been before as well as places I love. But it’s not exercise. It’s just a part of my everyday life every day.
Love getting extra cycling done on vacation! Great time to go on some longer rides and explore new places.
I cut back a little and partake in the local cuisine.
Vacation usually is a lot less training and more about enjoying the destination in the outdoors. Be it hiking, walking a city many times over, or taking advantage of a local bikeshare/bike rental. Basically, just being active and taking a break from the daily grind.
Vacations are race weekends for me. I’ve traveled to Hawaii for a race and will travel to Steamboat, Colorado for a marathon!
I’m a cyclist. If I can’t take a bike then I usually aim to fit in 30 minute runs while the rest of the family sleeps in. But then I decide 30 minutes isn’t long enough and go longer, or harder, or hillier and forget how much pain I’ll wake up in the next day!
running!! best way to explore.
Run, swim or bike wherever i’ll go… As simple as that… And yeah after training pizza!!
On vacation, I will stick to my training schedule or exceed it somewhat since I have the free time.
If there’s no bike around to do nu normal workouts, I usually go out running on nearby trails.
Depends on where I am! Whatever the location has best to offer I try to take advantage of regardless of load vacation is time to mix it up
Since I travel so much for work I train whenever I can, vacations are the only time I really get to devote time to train hard.
On vacation I train my lazy bone, sweet tooth and stomach muscles…
Bike mostly limited on family vaca. But always try to have water where we go so possibly get some OWS done.
I typically press on with eveb more training while on vacation since I have more time to recover!
Usually end up eating chocolate and drinking Coke.
I do try to keep up with training while on vacation, but as someone who is primarily a cyclist, I’d rather not have to travel with a bike. So, lately I’ve been renting bikes. Renting also gives me the opportunity to do something different and fun while on vacation, like ride a gravel or mountain bike on some scenic terrain.
Vacation is usually back-country hiking. So no training, but plenty of fun exercise.
Vacation for me is usually about spending time with the family. I will train if I have the chance but I don’t worry if I miss a workout. Life’s to short to not spend it with the ones you love.
Scenic runs or to find a good coffee spot
Definitely a run to explore the new area!
I wish I could take this to Patagonia and China…..
Training isn’t training to me, it’s working towards the next fun event/adventure in life and savouring the glorious moments in between.
We love to go to the mountains for vacation, so I’m usually doing more on vacation than normal! My husband, two kids, and I love to go biking and hiking together, and I get my alone time going for a run! :) Thanks for offering a great giveaway!
Always a run to see new sights. If I am lucky, I may get a full size pool now and then. Occasionally haul the bike along, but I get comments and looks from my wife when I do.
12 oz curls…
I normally plan vacations where I can actually take my bike or rent one. Feel far too guilty about not training and gaining weight to kick back completely.
I run, slowly, after having eaten too much food. Sometimes this over eating actually helps me float better when swimming. Win-win?
I always keep running when on a holiday. Biggest mileage week I ever did was on holiday! So much easier with the rest of the day to recover, sleep and swim in the ocean. I should go on holiday more!
Last vacation with the wife was a bike vacation so if it is more than just long weekend it usually includes putting some miles in
I always run while on vacation. As a Firefighter from New York, I recently travelled to Indianapolis and participated in a 110 story stair climb. This was done to honor the 343 firefighters lost on 9/11. The climb was done in full fiefighting gear including air tank. Very challenging.
It depends on the race schedule
Long runs by the beach…
I try to plan vacation with good outdoor activities that compensate for missed training. Otherwise. It’s run, run, run.
Usually try to get some short runs to stay a little active.
Hard training run in the morning, and then an 11 a.m. beer by the pool.
I always pack my shoes as well as goggles and a suit. Often i can get in a nice run before the family is up and around. One vacation i was Able to run on ali’i drive the whole week before they were up and around. Very cool. Another i got in swims in a hot springs pool and trail running in the mountains. It was like a vacation within the vacation!
Vacation time is running only, leaves more time for the family.
Many times a vacation is a chance to reboot a training program that has been knocked off course by the daily grind. Full time jobs, kids, home, etc all challenge the ability to get out every day. When on vacation I thrive knowing I’ve got nothing else to do but what I want to do, and that means I have time to train. What I get to do depends a lot on where I go, but running everywhere, swim when there’s water and ride if we take the bikes.
I live in the Algarve so every day is a holiday Run !
Plan a holiday with family along
…… Babysitter’s !
Then train my ring off while the miniature people are occupied.
I usually use vacations as an excuse to take a break from the training plan and just enjoy being active in a less structured way. I particularly enjoy renting a bike or going on an easy run with the focus on just exploring and seeing new sights without any particular pace/hr/power targets in mind.
I usually just resort to running. Pending where I am at might bring the bike or swim, but running is the mainstay and preemptive for drinking that will occur later in the day.
Mountain climbing and rock climbing until muy fingers bleed and muy shoes scream!
I try to schedule my training plans such that my vacations and other travels are included in the plan. For instance if I’m traveling to Ireland for work, that is a good week to focus on running.
I usually end up just doing some easy runs because it’s too hard to bring my bike or my pool most of the time.
I enjoy finding a trail and getting lost and at the same time discovering the vacation site and elevating the heart rate. Snorkeling is a close second if I’m at the ocean.
Always try to bring my bike, if not possible, take it easy and enjoy the sun and nice food.
Walking and running of course
I usually go for shorter distanses and less frequent runs using the vacation to be with the loved ones.
Running with a Fenix3 is good, running with a Fenix3 from DCR is a dream come true! :-)
If I can get in 2-3 runs I’m doing pretty good.
During vacation it is running, it does not take so much time. This year I plan also some hiking :o)
I usually try to involve my kids on creative runs/hiking. They always say that those are the funnest parts of vacation.
press on on vacation. It will usually include a swim and a bike each day. Leave the running at home
I usually try to schedule my recovery week during vacation.
Always try to use the opportunity to increase training a lot during vacation, as it is running I normally do. Add in some weight training if available too.
I just run easy around Disney World when I’m on vacation.
Daily doubles, mostly running.
Cyclotouring is the best combination of training and vacationing.
not many days of vacation in a row, usually, so most of the times a pair of racing shoes is all I pick up. But I’m lucky enough to live in a place where people come for mtbiking, trail running, and xcountryskiing, so short holidays are not that bad. Now that you make me think of, i need to improve much the icecream eating part of my sport training. I already own a tech gadget I use to record my progresses: it’s called a scale…
Walking and running
I normali do some running et much walking with the familly :-)
It depends on the season, skiing in the winter or mtbing in the summer.
Morning runs. I love exploring new routes while on vacation.
Well having just finished a week in Phuket, two runs on the beach, 30 deg 90%humidity, two sea swims and one gym. And lots of lounger time
On vacation – go for a run in the early morning before the crowds and traffic. 5ht ave New York with no people, running past the Louvre or down the Champs Elysee with no traffic, around London with no crowds. Our fitness makes this experience possible!
I actually pick my training up on vacation. Nothing to distract me and I head out before the kids wake up. Plus hard workouts are easier to recover from poolside!
I leave my trainers at home and take a break!
Running during vacation and recording theme park rides!
Usually a lot of hiking with family plus some occasional bike rides.
Was on Phillipines for a few days.I say you need to feel and enjoy your vacation, indulge in all the flavors but if you a runner take at least one run to explore the area and fill up your soul.At least I need this feeling doesn’t matter where I am.
