It’s giveaway time! Partly because it’s been a while, partly because it’s Friday and it seems fitting, and partly just cause I’m on vacation and this seemed a whole lot easier than writing an in-depth review.
This time I’m giving away a Garmin Fenix3 multisport watch, sponsored by Clever Training. It’s the only watch I brought with me on vacation (yes, I know, only one watch – incredible!)
So how do you enter?
Simple: All you need to do is write a comment below with what type of training (or I suppose racing) you typically do on vacation. Do you cut back, or press on as per the schedule? Or does all training just simply shift to eating ice cream and chocolate bonbons?
The winner will get to choose any Fenix3 variant from Clever Training. This could be the base grey one (seen middle in photo above), or the more swanky Sapphire unit with the metal link strap. And then you can get it with or without the HR strap. Totally your choice!
As usual, Clever Training is sponsoring the giveaway. Remember you can save 10% off anything they sell through either the coupon code or the DCR/CT VIP program, plus of course free US shipping for goods over $75US.
Thanks for reading!
The giveaway entry period will run through Monday, April 27th, 2015 until 11:59PM US Eastern Time. Winner will be selected randomly. One entry per person. The product will then be ordered immediately and shipped immediately, assuming in stock.

I train even more!!
It depends. Can manage to continue training (mostly swim and run) but food is the big issue. Impossible to cut back…
I normally do a kind of training camp while be on vacation. Running nearly every day. Swimming and other sports.
Mostly just running, trying to find interesting routes
Vacation is vacation from everything! Family, Espresso, Sun an fun.
Biking and running the trails. Much like I’m doing Lake Maggiore right now. Nothing hard, not easy but mostly the best way to see the area.
Hiking, trail running and swimming. If my bikes are with me – long road biking
Vacation is about relaxing and getting energy back. So light running and chilling thats it :)
Find interesting trails in the area to explore the scenery. Acctualy run more then other times :-)
Hope you have a great vacation, Ray! My training on vacation totally depends on the location. I always keep training but I may cut I back depending on where I am.
Cycle up the nearest hill and wish I had brought my own bike. Rental never feels right.
I usually take a break from running with long hikes, walks and icecreams.
My trainings not vacation involves chasing our four kids around while my wife finally gets to relax.
I train more; typically enjoy change of scenery and love exploring new territory in running shoes or on bike.
Vacation training usually includes leisure activities specific to the region such as hiking, cycling, etc. If the weather is nice and the surroundings are beautiful maybe I’ll squeeze in a run. Occasionally I hop into the hotel pool for some laps.
Nothing too strenuous though.
Vacation is recovery time for mind, body, and soul.
I keep up with running and go exploring, mostly use gyms for cycling, swimming depends on the circumstances.
For me every run, swim or bikeride means the good life. So on vacation I try to experience that life as much as possible.
Swimming and running
I try to carry on like normal….and eat chocolate and drink beer.
No training, just enjoying the free time. Lazy but necessary :)
I train more to over compensate for allowing the beers I am drinking!
Real runners take vacations for the run! Nothing beats a destination race! J/K
But for most work trips, I try to take at least one set of running clothes and shoes. I figure since I took the time and space to pack the clothes, I better end up actually using them. Pro Tip: either pack a trash bag or take one from the hotel before you fill it up. They usually have extras in the bottom of the trashcan.
I rent a bike, throw the camera bag over my shoulder and off I go to see the sights!
That’s kinky one, on holidays it’s pretty active all and all so there is no specially reserved time for training. Many holidays on the other hand is for running contests, so that is just eating and saving energy. So answer is I don’t train on holidays, plain and simple :)
Holiday, that’s when we can increase our training. Never travel without a bike
depends where we are – i usually try to get out for a run when i can. last vacation was in Jamaica – i got in 2 open water swims and 2 short runs in 3.5 days
vacation is an active time with the wife and kids. I usually wake up and sneak in an early morning run.
I did Matterhorn Ultraks 30km last day of our family holiday in Zermatt. Only problem was my wife didn’t know I have registration and I had to drive us home just after the competition (around 1200km…) Imagine my legs then :-)
Triathlon, generally, but with an intense focus on the refuel with local food/drinks/deserts
On vacation I use the time to sport with my wife and enjoy the rest of the day discovering the places where we stay.
My training on vacation mostly consists of finding the nearest mountain and trying to climb it.
best intentions to get up early and take a run on the beach but those intentions are turned off with the alarm as my head goes back on the pillow.
I love planning vacation running. It’s a great opportunity to explore. Depending on the trip I’ll schedule a more intensive block of training and “train like a pro” by taking naps and sometimes even scheduling a sports massage.
Schedules are bad on vacation, but I try to do the workouts anyway just without drama if I miss one or go easy on another. I find running is very good to have a restart especially the first day when you have been siting in planes and cars.
vacation time = mental & physical rest
I hit it hard on vacation, run tons of miles so I can pig out on junk food and see the sights
If I do anything on vacation, it’s running. For most of my trips I at least throw in a pair of running shorts and shoes to give me the option. On the rare occasion that I’m sailing somewhere I’ll also include a pair of goggles for impromptu swimming. Of course, none of this precludes chocolate bonbons when they’re available.
i love working out on vacation. different spots than normal always makes it fun.
I guess I would consider camping a vacation, in which case I usually do some trail running and attempt to run up mountains. Follow that with cheap camp food, beer and good company.
Most of my holidays are for a race. Half and full marathons, and some trail races.
I run I am, I am I run. 82K+ miles run and counting. Vacations, more time to run.
I like to multitask and search out new biking or running routes so I can tour while I’m getting my workout in. Getting in my workout on vacation also allows me to eat and drink the yummy local food with out feeling guilty :).
I rent a bike and every morning I ride more that I can. In the afternoon a lot of ice creams, of course!
I rarely have vacation so when they come I would just rest, eat and drink =)
Training in vacation is a good thing, I usually try to run once a day, but sometimes also do activities which is not a typical planned exercise, but became a good hiking trip of some sorts.
Is this vacation a bike tour? In that case I’m biking…. ;) Otherwise I’m slacking off
Ultra trail running training and races.
I run to some new fun place and almost always swim openwater. I sometimes bring my bike in my RusterSports bag … if traveling for work, I try to find a Masters swim workout nearby. Next week I am on vacation running in Zion!
I usually end up just hiking on vacation so that takes the place of any workouts. Maybe a little running or biking mixed in, but mainly just hiking.
On almost all my vacations, runs are easiest for me, followed by swimming if hotel has a decently sized pool; biking depends on whether a bike share system is available and lastly hiking, if there’s a nice park nearby.
I usually cut down the training time with at least 50%. That gives time for sunbathing, golfing and relaxing.
If the “vacation” is backpacking or any type of activity that requires some work then I dial my typical training down and enjoy the change of pace. If it’s a “do nothing” vacation or a “relaxing” vacation then I typically do next to nothing for training. Although I try and schedule these type vacations at a time that I would normally be on a non mission critical training cycle period.
Most of my training during vacation means small runs or ride, and the rest of time, enjoy free time with my family.
run, swim, ice cream :)
Vacation is the best time for new experiences, so I try to use the most of the specific location. Am I close to a mountain? Hiking or trail running. By the Sea? Swimming or morning runs on the beach. I always try to use what the geographic area provides to take in the scenery and nature experience.
Running, it’s relatively quick and easy and can be done almost anywhere. Plus usually a lot of walking around with the fam!
I love training or racing while on vacation, to the point that I train hard in the weeks leading up to a vacation so that I have a higher level of fitness to allow me to get more training in.
Keep at it. Just earlier than usual so I don’t get told off :)
Normally my holidays are for racing or mountain climbing. If I go with the family for a weekend getaway, then I stil squeeze a few runs.
Mostly training for running, but also swimming if I can.
Running. Minimal things to bring (shoes) and can be done everywhere.
Run and sometimes rent bikes while on vacation, Mahalos!
On vacations, I run mainly in the morning after which do a good relaxing swim in the pool or openwater depending where we stay with my family. Of course I follow the training program whenever I can )))
Scale back … except for vacation related activities (swim and beach runs and skiing etc) and the inevitable beer curls
Total relax, trying not to eat like pig but dont even go jogging at the beach. Only sports is sex :-).
I definitely cut back but try to do something active every day. It’s just too hard to get back into the swing of things when I get home if I don’t keep up the habit.
my favorite is to trade my bike with me on vacation, but if not then use what is available. On a recent cruise I mixed time on a spin bike with running laps on deck. Need to keep training to justify those extra cocktails.
Orienteering, it’s normally the reason for going away!
Depends how close am I to race day, and if it’s a rolling vacation or not.
Usually would try to maintain at least some level if training though.
Vacation, a triathlete is never ever in vacation!
Running on the beach is my fav extra holiday activity – the hotel / cottage is often deceptively far away and the noise of the sea beats spots off the noise of the city
Typically, I cut back some, but still try to get some running in or at least a nice walk on the beach with my wife. That, and I eat.. A LOT.
Always trying to keep the schedule, sometimes cutting back a little when necessary. Never stop completely. :)
On vacations I relax and run just a bit to support my husband during his training.
Rest with long walks, hikes and swimming
Pick me pick me
A little of swimming, pool or ocean depending on the season..
Taking it easy – maybe a couple of gentle 5K or 10K jogs to up the activity level (a little…)
one of my favorite things when on vacation, is to take my forerunner and go out for a run in a new city and just follow the gps
Training continues no matter what! Best getting to experience a different locale and see what you can find.
Depends on the venue. When to the mountains, cycling and hiking (or skiing in season). Paddling in some places. It also depends on what my spouse has planned and if I’m viewing it as a training vacation or an R&R vacation.
Vacation plan: Go to Lago di Garda, get on a MTB cycle up Strada del Monte Baldo >>> done.
I try to schedule a cutback week during my vacation week. For instance, in about a month I will be going on a cruise and will only run about 40 miles in the week rather then my usual 80. Couldn’t cut it completely back because it is too good of an opportunity to run in cool new places.
Try to keep consistent where ever I am!
Try to run with icecream. Not always works…
Definitely more time for training than during the working days. Early morning quick one or two hours on bike then relax :-)
Occasional jog and lots of food, it is a holiday after all!
Run, drink, run some more.
I always try to bring my bike with me on vacation, it is always nice to ride somewhere new!!
Definitely cut back on vacation! Maybe a few short runs, or even just long walks.
I usually cut down a little but do more swimming and less running and prefer cycling. Also with cycling I can sightsee a little
Usually run more on vacation since I have more free time. It’s also a great way to see places.
My vacation running becomes my opportunity to get away and explore, while the family rests and relaxes. A vacation within the vacation!
I usually try to get a few runs in while on vacation as a way to explore where I’m staying, but being vacation often means training is also on vacation.
On vacation I get up each morning as early as I can. Depending on what we did the day/night before sometimes that’s easy, sometimes not. I then go run as far as I can. Sometimes that’s a few miles and sometimes that’s to the parking lot to puke in a dumpster. Then after the run I rest and enjoy the day. I do that every day of every vacation!
Interval training with my flippers on the beach!
When off I usually go into ice cream training mode.
I cut back and eat too much. Though training by swimming with sharks this week is a novelty!!
If near water and it’s warm then swimming. Morning run is always on the calendar.
Usually vacation means summer, summer means beach and beach means swimming… but also a bit of running with my daughter (she is 18; I am 44 and still run faster than her but that is not going to last for many years…)
