The DCR’s on Vacation Fenix3 Giveaway!

IMG_7145

It’s giveaway time!  Partly because it’s been a while, partly because it’s Friday and it seems fitting, and partly just cause I’m on vacation and this seemed a whole lot easier than writing an in-depth review.

This time I’m giving away a Garmin Fenix3 multisport watch, sponsored by Clever Training.  It’s the only watch I brought with me on vacation (yes, I know, only one watch – incredible!)

So how do you enter?

Simple: All you need to do is write a comment below with what type of training (or I suppose racing) you typically do on vacation.  Do you cut back, or press on as per the schedule?  Or does all training just simply shift to eating ice cream and chocolate bonbons?

The winner will get to choose any Fenix3 variant from Clever Training.  This could be the base grey one (seen middle in photo above), or the more swanky Sapphire unit with the metal link strap.  And then you can get it with or without the HR strap.  Totally your choice!

As usual, Clever Training is sponsoring the giveaway.  Remember you can save 10% off anything they sell through either the coupon code or the DCR/CT VIP program, plus of course free US shipping for goods over $75US.

Thanks for reading!

The giveaway entry period will run through Monday, April 27th, 2015 until 11:59PM US Eastern Time.  Winner will be selected randomly. One entry per person. The product will then be ordered immediately and shipped immediately, assuming in stock.

Last year I was training so much that vacations were long runs or bike if hotel had stationary. Post heart attack I’ve been released to exercise again and im focused on running this year. Swimming when I can.

  2. I train triathlon and i bought a watch can’t use on the water so now im looking for another watch and because have a polar watch and a forerunner 15.
Need to know how garming can improve my training against polar watch.
    cheers.

  3. Troy

I definitely press on, some of my best, as in most interesting, runs have been on vacation. At home I have run the same roads and trails repeatedly, it is a blessing to get to try something new and novel.

  4. running and therabands

  5. Eli Selzer

I try to run, whenever possible, on vacation. My favorite has been in Regents Park and around the Camden Locks when I went to London. Will usually take advantage of whatever the hotel has, too (pool or gym).

  6. Mor Himi

I really cut back on vacation, no time to workout…

  7. Greg

I do a lot of mountainbiking. This year I also continue with running.
Hopefully Fenix 3 will help me with both ;)

  8. Santiago

When on vacations it is usually a maintenance routine in which I run without a specific schedule, just how much I am willing (or able to) run in any particular day and try to enjoy the scenery!

  9. Melanie

We try to be more active on vacation. Best recent vacation revolved around 5 days on the bikes.

  10. Shawn

No training while on vacation because vacation, but I do tend to walk everywhere I go whether I’m in a city or the woods. Bonbons and ice cream are a definite possibility as is tons of ethnic quisine.

  11. David

No schedules, no planning… But lots of trail running, sea swimming and mountain biking !

  12. Daniel Brosemer

My normal training is cycling, but when on vacation, it’s much easier to travel with a pair of running shoes, so running becomes dominant.

Of course ice cream plays a major role too.

  13. jakub

Eating ice cream and some running in between;)

  14. Mark

I usually ask my wife to drop me of somewhere. Or take a one way bus- or trainticket. This means I have a goal: to get home. Furthermore, I can explore a new area which is always nice!

  15. Justin Spohn

The training never really stops – but not so much because I’m diehard about it (Im not) but just because I love to run everywhere I go. It’s just a great way to see a place. I’m off to rural Tanzania in a month and Im hoping to get my most remote run in yet.

  16. Totally depends on where I am– I’ll usually try to run and lift, and swim if that’s a possibility.

  17. Gabe Raff

I love to take leisurely long runs while on vacation. Nothing beats a long run and being tired, but not having a thing to do afterwards.

    Gabe

  18. Boris

Escaping my flat urbanized country is always a good reason to go running in the nature !

  19. vacation is usualyl “the race” ive been training for all year.

  20. Si

Holidays are a rest period for me. I will walk but not the usual runs that I do during the week.

  21. Aine McCullagh

Training on Holiday! You gotta be kidding

  22. Brian Ruggles

Don’t go on vacation much unfortunately, but when I do, I try to get in about half of my normal training, just so I don’t get too lazy!

  23. Maciej Mierzwiński

Depends on type of vacation. Either nothing if I’m sailing or pushing it to the limit if I’ve got my bike with. The children are the limit off course ;-)

  24. Shari F

I hit the resort gym and do whatever they have there. I try to mix it up with what is available to me

  25. Tim

It depends. If I have a long flight, I would cut back for a couple of days and make only easy runs with several pickups. Staying at home I would increase my training load, add some strength sessions and long runs.

  26. Henrik K

Cycling, more miles, nicer roads. Moar of everything good in life :)

  27. Ronald

When on vacation I always choose a hotel/resort with at least a 20m pool for early morning swim or map a 10k running route beforehand. If all else fails, indoor cycle! I love to explore on a run when on vacation.

  28. Scott

This year’s vacation is actually finishing with me doing my second half Ironman of the season. A few days relaxing on the beach (probably with some open water swims) and some easy bike rides then knocking out a HIM before going home.

  29. I always love trying to find race opportunities wherever I go but otherwise, I do a little research on cool places to see that are running friendly. If I can’t find any running or swimming friendly areas where I am, I’ll just resort to the hotel gym. ugh. But I absolutely do not stop training!

  30. Aaron W

On vacation, I utilize the training I’ve done for my enjoyment. Thus, the training is minimized, but my activity level is well above any normal training level.

  31. jan

I don’t cut back, on the contrary. I usually train more. I run ultras… So being on vacation means I can explore new trails, visit small villages on the way,run up some hills, fall into water and trip over a couple of roots, just to make sure;-).

  32. Kermit262

Walt Disney World with the family! And on occasion, get to fit in some Disney races while we are there. :)

  33. XLrunner

I relish different places to run or bike. When I go on vacation I religiously stick with my program as much as I can, taking into account jet lag of course. I love planning my routes beforehand on Strava or Garmin. And there is nothing like a segment KOM in some godforsaken place, and knowing it is not likely to be taken by anyone soon.

  34. McLav74

im normally fairly structured with my training when at home but when training on holiday I turn into an explorer, some of my best runs have been exploring strange cities, parks, forests etc but I always have my Garmin!! My 610 is due an upgrade!?!

  35. Zenek

    ice rules
    winter: ice skating
    summer: ice cream
and trail running, trail running, trail running

  36. I try to stick to the plan if I have a race coming up, otherwise I’ll do some long walks to enjoy scenery or something quick to get it done so I can enjoy the day.

  37. Nathan

I try my best to make sure I keep up with my training schedule, usually get up early and do a run to not impact any plans with friends or family

  38. Dan Reed

Depends on where we go and how we get there. I generally don’t fly with my bike so I will increase my running and cals. If I take the bike, I will do days running and 3 days riding per week with calisthenics during the runs. If I’m going to a mountainous area, hiking will be incorporated. Of course, if we go to a beach, I include swimming.

  39. David

During vacation I switch to pig out mode.

  40. Frederic Bard

When I go on vacation, I take the opportunity to discover new places while keeping the same training plan

  41. dan welch

Depending on the time of year or upcoming race…. i try to not let vacations ruin my training schedule. my wife loves me… luckily.

  42. Raphael Bolduc

When I’m on vacation and I stay home, my training time goes up and so does my sleeping time! :)
When I’m on vacation and go out for a family trip, I stop everything and take that as a rest period. If I wasn’t doing that, my girlfriend would kill me anyway so the training would come to a stop! :D

  43. Jonathan

Hiking and kilometers on the trail!

  44. Adison

Swim 1000 yards or run for 6 miles, do them both once a week.

  45. Etienne

On vacation I enjoy trailrunning with actual difference in altitude, which is nearly impossible in the Netherlands where I live.

  46. Tom

I hate to say it but my training usually takes a vacation when I do. I may do some light cross training but nothing major.

  47. BruceR

Mainly running as can consistently get in a session independent of the location or weather.

  48. Marek

I spend my vacations in the mountains, so let’s call it cross training with occasional trail running thrown in when situation allows.

  49. Andy

I usually just go by feel and get a couple of easy runs in making sure I’m well rested and motivated when I get back home, where it’s usually easier to get in quality training without getting lost or stuff like that.

  50. Nicole welch

My husband trains on vacation… me? I parent. I’m happy because he is happy, plus he does ironman distance races, I can miss some runs because frankly I hate running…

  51. Joel Sturgill

Vacations offer a nice break from the usual running routes. It’s fun to layout a new course and go see what’s out there! I don’t hit all my planned workouts but make the ones I get count! Plus there is usually lots of walking.

  52. Alan Duggan

I try to stick to schedule but inevitably at lower intensity.

  53. Kenny K

I always say I’m going train.. but then the reality is I just train by eating ice cream and sweets.

  54. Chris

When possible, I try to get up early for a run.

  55. Ann

Swimming and running if at the beach on a summer vacation, else skiing or snowshoeing on winter vacations.

  56. Jose Carlos Rodriguez

I tray to swim in the ocean when it’s possible and try to run outside to know the place better. Also try to take my carbs intake to the highest level haha

  57. Kasper Wøbbe

I eat all the icecream I want and recharge my batteries. Eventually I only eat 2-3 icecream but do not set any restrictions.

  58. Rob

Way more time when work isn’t getting in the way!

  59. Richard M

Well on my last vacation in BVI, I swam around the boat a few times….typically on vacation though depending on where I’m going I do like to bring my bike if possible and explore the area via biking/workouts.

  60. theboxers

My holidays usually involve a ride of several hundred miles a day (longest was 1004km in 12 hours) on a motorbike to new places. Then walking around to see what is there. No running or riding (of the pedal variety) but I have been swimming in a few odd places, the Norwegian sea not far from Mehamn is one. Bloody cold even in summer.

  61. Richard C

We typically take beach vacations, which means that I get to do more open water swimming. Yeah!

  62. Karl watanabe

I at least run as much as I can while on vacation since all I need are running shoes and shorts at the minimum. Usually there is a gym and I will ride a stationary bike and sometimes hit those little pools, but mostly run.

  63. Christer

i usually run or swim, not much equipment to bring and makes it easy to keep training and eat a lot of ice cream.

  64. Michael

If I’m driving to the vacation spot, I’ll throw my bike in/on the back of the car and challenge the local mountains. Always fun to try new Strava segments and see how my efforts compare city to city. If its a long haul through the air, then I’ll just bring my running gear (shoes, shorts, water), so much easier than managing a big bike through the airport! Using my cycling GPS though isn’t as mice as having a running watch would be!

  65. Marcin

During vacation time I usually just try to continue with my running schedule

  66. Tona

    Swimming and drinking beers :)

  67. Tom

Depends on the holiday – I like to think of skiing as training, but otherwise cycling or swimming wherever possible. I tend to get a more training done on holiday than during a usual week.

  68. Paul S.

I train more, because I’m not working! Generally more bicycling and hiking.

  69. I am a Belgian pro cyclist,
During my vacation in october i m swimming a lot and do some little trail near the Mt Ventoux.
No bicycle during this period :)

  70. depends where we are – if we’re by the sea, sea swimming – much nicer than lake swimming in the UK with a wetsuit.

  71. David Cruz

i tend to run around the city and explore that way.

  72. Nick Dailey

I usually try to keep up with schedule. I get up early to run… Then take a nap!

  73. Patrick

I will continue my running training according my shedule. But there is always enough time for my kids and my wife. So I will keep the balance between hard workout and leisure time with the family. The Fenix 3 would be the right tool to find the way back in time. ;-)

  74. It depends on the vacation, but usually I walk everywhere at considerably fast pace and consider that my exercise. For example, this year during Paris marathon weekend we walked 54 km in 3 days (also ran the 5k Paris breakfast run) – we were lucky that Paris was more or less flat.

  75. Tory

My vacations are racecations. The I eat up everything in sight.

  76. Jeff Schaffer

Hiking generally. if in a city, I will just take long walks in the city.

  77. Carole

Enjoying the time off, no trainings

  78. Karl P

    Running on the beach

  79. Jozsef Sz.

A morning or evening run feels right even if I am on vacation, therefore the running shoes always with me. (also on business trip) I always have some “limitation” and it is not impossible, but very difficult to keep my training plan during vacation, so I always adjust a little bit according to my daily activities and the equipments available (gym, bike etc.)

I always add some more entertaining activities as well, like golf, tennis, hiking, trekking etc. which are fun and usually not part of my weekly plan.

Foodwise are no rules and musts, I wont miss anything tasty or local, when I visiting new places, but I like to keep tracking my calories during holidays as well.

  80. Dan Mc

My training doesn’t change. I always try to find a local race to run in.

  81. Adam Neilson

Always like to go somewhere with good cycling and ideally a laned pool. Nothing better than sunny cycling!

  82. William L

Typically enjoy the hot weather somewhere with a few long runs, choosing the most scenic route possible and ending up down at the sea for a cool-down swim and stretch session.

  83. Ben

Ride hard and come home destroyed :)

  84. Joel

Reduce training volume by 50% and focus on mobility, stability and kinesthetic awareness. And sleep!

  85. Richard Sheward

I press on, but make it fun. For instance, I went to a friend’s wedding in Charleston, SC in May while training for a marathon in June, so for one of my training/taper runs, I got to explore a new city, killing two-birds with one stone.

    Cheers!

  86. Robert Jeter

While overseas in “rough neighborhoods” I run and bike on stationary equipment in the gym and maybe get in a short swim in a non-standard very short pool.

  87. Jonathan

The family vacation gives me even more freedom to enjoy epic back-to-back long runs, starting early in the morning or just after dinner. Anything ranging from 35 to 60k a day is par for the course. These distances are even more sustainable during the vacations, because you can recover even better than at home (for instance, taking a swim and a nap afterwards).

  88. Andrew

Generally running for me, but more as a way of exploring the local area than for keeping fit. It is an added benefit that it helps burn off the extra food and drink consumed :-D

  89. Steve Hunter

I don’t go on vacations that often. However when I do, I slow things down and do mostly hiking with my wife. The odd solo run too!

  90. Björn Wolf

I never cut back ;) On vacation there’s usually more hiking with my girl and my dog. But the bike is always with me.

  91. Tom Lang

Swim and Run when ever i can

  92. Paul

Vacation means going somewhere nicer than winter in Chicago, which means training gets changed up to running outside in December!

  93. James Cisneros

While on vacation all training is suspended. I enjoy the time with the family and get my exercise through brisk walks and lifting quarter pounders with cheese! It’s a vacation after all:)

  94. Carlos

    Recovery runs

  95. Scott Trice

Vacations are usually taken in nice tropical locations so running and swimming. The next 2 vacations are technically just long weekends to go to races.

  96. Colin

On vacation I like to run as a way to explore. Usually separate from whatever my current schedule is.

  97. brian

    (hungover) running only

  98. Antoine Siegel

lots of food and lots of walking to visit places, some occasional short runs…

  99. Ricky Roberts

My vacations include training that I don’t normally get while at home, this summer it will be long runs on the beach and an open water swim!

  100. Benjamin

My training on holiday usually consists of laps of the pool. Unless it’s at my parents’ house. In which case I seize the opportunity to cycle on mountains! (They’re rare in the Netherlands)!

I’m going on “holiday” in May to run the Brussels 20Km!
