It’s giveaway time! Partly because it’s been a while, partly because it’s Friday and it seems fitting, and partly just cause I’m on vacation and this seemed a whole lot easier than writing an in-depth review.
This time I’m giving away a Garmin Fenix3 multisport watch, sponsored by Clever Training. It’s the only watch I brought with me on vacation (yes, I know, only one watch – incredible!)
So how do you enter?
Simple: All you need to do is write a comment below with what type of training (or I suppose racing) you typically do on vacation. Do you cut back, or press on as per the schedule? Or does all training just simply shift to eating ice cream and chocolate bonbons?
The winner will get to choose any Fenix3 variant from Clever Training. This could be the base grey one (seen middle in photo above), or the more swanky Sapphire unit with the metal link strap. And then you can get it with or without the HR strap. Totally your choice!
As usual, Clever Training is sponsoring the giveaway. Remember you can save 10% off anything they sell through either the coupon code or the DCR/CT VIP program, plus of course free US shipping for goods over $75US.
Thanks for reading!
The giveaway entry period will run through Monday, April 27th, 2015 until 11:59PM US Eastern Time. Winner will be selected randomly. One entry per person. The product will then be ordered immediately and shipped immediately, assuming in stock.

My plan is to enjoy as much time outside as possible! Give me mountains I can hike, roads I can bicycle and trails I can run! I’ll take it all :-). With a big smile.
I’ll rearrange my training schedule so I can relax on vacation But I’ll do a short run anyways just for the joy of running in a new location.
I love to take short scenic trail runs while on vacation.
I change all of my runs to “fun runs” and lighten up a bit
Depends if the kids are around but either way I usually focus on my eating.
Running for me. Love to have GPS data from all the places I travel. Thanks!
Running,cycling and gym.
I do cut back when I am on vacation and to eat amazing fatty foods of course. It is about laying back and relaxing when I am on vacation for me because I am not worried that I will lose my discipline in my excising routing when I get back from vacation.
At times I do try to find some time to work in some excises when there are some gaps in the middle of my day or I find some amazing trail try out, like recently in Austin, Texas. Vacation is time away from daily routine for me and enjoy the area and what it has to offer every minute you are there.
I do body-weight workouts like Tabata HIIT intervals, and try to run if I can manage getting back to my start point.
Since I usually do a runcation, I usually do a race. If not racing, I usually do yoga and trail exploring runs – long enough to kill the extra energy but not hard enough wipe me out for the day.
I usually continue on with my normal schedule. BTW chocolates are always part of my NORMAL routine :)
I enjoy exploring new places to run while on vacation.
Vacation is occasionally a bike-related trip, but otherwise is full gas off the bike and down the hatch!
I take the time off to swim more because at that time I don’t have a tight schedule and I keep the same workload on my running and strength sessions.
Bringing a bike is too much hassle for those short getaways holidays I do while swimming is just boring (unless im near the sea!)
I plan a route around the major attractions in a city for running or just go wherever my heart takes me when out in the country. (and then eat a huge meal when im done!)
Vacation for me is usually time to recover, do some light running and eat plente of local food.
Generally I keep a pedometer on, as I walk a lot more on vacation than when at home. If I didnt walk a lot for some reason, I do a workout in the gym every other day or so, generally a 5k and some weights. I try to keep it about the same level of calorie burning as I would normally, but I am probably eating a bit more.
Switch to day-drinking training!
eating and hiking on vacation
Running for sure and some biking if time permits.
I do a quadrathlon.
Swim
Bike
Run
Eat
Try to maintain rhythm but invariably fail….
I will usually go running in the mornings. Then during the day, my wife and I will find something active to do. Either hiking our kayaking.
I try to follow my training schedule to a “T” no matter what. It really is nice to go and explore new places via running.
I enjoy my vacations running and cycling!!!
I bring my running shoes because it’s ez! Too much gear to bring along to bike on vacation :)
I normally try to get in a couple of early morning rides and runs.
Going for a jog on vacation is a great way to explore the location I’m at and also to make up for the feast I had the days before lol
Most vacations are centered around a big Marathon now a days with my family. Aside from our honeymoon, my wife and I took our first family vacation to NYC in 2013 for the ING NYC Marathon! We have also gone to Galveston, TX for that Marathon and Houston, TX for that Marathon with many more planned in the future.
We were actually planning a trip to Hawaii in December 2014 for that Marathon and a week long vacation until we found out we were pregnant and my wife was due around then!
try to schedule vacation around races feel less guilty when we involve family.
I continue my regularly scheduled training through vacation and only cutback if the wife starts complaining.
Light cardio, but more on the light to none side when on VACA.
Just random runs as close to the coast as I can :-)
Find somewhere scenic/epic to run/ride.
Vacation if often alot of walking and swimming… But main thing is recovery
Running or trail running, it depends on where I’m on vacations. After that I’ll get the Ice cream and chocolates…
Running at my convenience.
Depends – we go to the beach every year and I bring the bike – so I bike and swim maybe a little less in mileage but keep it up. No swimming or lifting typically.
Disney World – we are busy that I may get a run in here or there. But with my kids, we are going pretty hard so no training (plenty of walking)
I bring my shoes and even my bike last time but all I ever do is look at them!!
Cutting down to do only running and if there is a pool some swim training. It is a vacation!
Trail running and biking non stop :)
Sleep, Eat, Drink. Repeat
I typically plan a vacation around training in that it I don’t vacation until training is over so I can vacation from all aspects of life! :)
My vacation usually involves chasing my son around the pool as excercise but getting in some runs and strength training is always good.
I try ti bring my running shoes and swim gear, really enjoy running in new places. My next holiday, I have booked a 2 day mountain bike excursion so it will meet my training needs. Just need the watch now ;)
Cycling, either on road or on trails!
Be a slacker and regret on the next training
I will try to do a run everyday. Great way to explore a new area.
Train?!?! I know my place and position within a race. Pack fodder doesn’t need to train all the time. Vacation to me means stepping back and enjoying other things life has to offer.
I still do “training” in a way – go for runs in the morning, walk everywhere with my wife, lots of paddling (since we vacation at the shore every spring, its my best time to get some valued ocean paddling in) – but I cut back on some of the hardcore stuff – don’t hit the gym, limited intervals, etc. I essentially cut back the intensity somewhat – and what is vacation at the beach without mimosas for breakfast and ice cream in the afternoon!
Primary training on vacation is the extremely difficult workout of sleeping. And core workouts, maybe a short ride or two.
Vacations usually mean trips to places i’ve never been, when I arrive the best thing I can do to put a smile on my face is lace up my running shoes and head out to explore. All of the runs, climbs, paddling, skiing I do on holiday turns from focused training into pure fun, mostly without a stopwatch going. That said, these self monitored efforts turn out to be high output fun so although the mindset shifts, the training continues forward!
I try to keep up with the running as my bike does not usually make the trip. I also hike, ski, and snowshoe. A Fenix 3 would be the perfect vacation watch!!
If within driving distance I bring the bike. Great way to see the area. If not, I just bring running shoes. Normally plan a workout every day and miss a couple… it is vacation after all
Training? What training??
Take it naturally — if biking comes up, then I bike, but nothing planned. Usually though we do hikes/bikes around so still pretty active, but nothing scheduled.
Taking some running shorts and shoes is the easy button on Vacation. I tend to run if I can. If not I’ll use the machines. If the schedule allows I train more on vacation since home life is so busy with work and kids.
But the question is… if you only took one watch… will you do some weights so you don’t lose arm strength?
My vacations are mostly runcations. For example, headed to Paris in September to do Spartan Super.
I like to just keep my workouts on vacation to a nice easy pace to slow down and check out the scenery and enjoy what is happening in a place I am not familiar with… :)
Most of my vacations are for races, so training continues. Although I do tend to eat more when on vacation.
Well i haven’t started training this year so this could be a good kick up the arse.
since vacation is somewhere warmer than where I live, I take full advantage of being able to get a good sweat on
Swimming mainly especially if its somewhere warm although I’m really tempted to go surfing and try the new Surf Tracker app which seems such a cool use for ConnectIQ
Training on vacation……….. usually vacation for me involves some (read a lot) of alcohol. So training is difficult. However, I do try to run every other or at least every third day.
It depends on were I’m on vacation at. When we take a vacation in Colorado I try to get as much vert as possible. When at the beach I don’t do a whole lot of running. This year our vacation is at Yellowstone NP a few days after BigHorn 100! So I wont be doing any running, just relaxing!
Usually running, hiking, swimming. Depends on the place but the bike has not made any plane flights yet. Sometimes they are rented. Something long where the scenery can be enjoyed
My wallet tends to get more exercise than I do on vacation but I do try to mix a little cardio with hotel gym or just walking/exploring all day – depends where I am on vacation.
Beer on the beach
Cut back on the training, but still get some running and body weight workouts in as I can. Have to balance out the beer and spirits somehow.
floating in the pool with a cocktail.
A quick morning run on holidays is my favourite way to explore a new place! And if I’m allowed to bring my bike it’s a bonus!
On vacation, I usually skip any training…this year, however, I have a bookend du right after a week away, so I’ll be definitely be training while on holiday. :)
I do not go on holiday to rest. I specifically go for hiking, kite, canyoning and climbing, etc.. during that time I did not run or bike like the rest of the year
Depends on where we go. Typically slow down and just try to fit in a couple runs. If at the beach do at least a couple open water swims. Usually am forbidden to bring the bike, unless I can bring everyones.
Usually try and hike with the family when on vacations, sometimes I’ll squeeze a quick run early morning if I’m able.
I have amazing intentions to run that usually go to the wayside once I arrive. Boo.
On vacations I love to do all strava challenges I can do.
Me and the Girl always keep up fit on vacations. Our last vacations were doing the Way of St James, so everyday we had between 8 and 10 hours of training – walking. This one was obvious.
When we go on vacations that are more relaxed, we start the day with a high protein breakfast, and start our routine of strength training – it’s easy to do it with TRX (they’re lightweight and you easily can carry them on your bag). One muscular group per day, 4 different exercises, 4 series of 12 repetitions each. In the end, it’s the cardio time, 20 min of bike or run. Normally it’s like 1h to 1h30 per day – and we’re good to enjoy the rest of the day. (By the way, we use myfitnesspal to track the macronutrients and ensure we’re not going too wild)
By the way, in august we will do another way of St James (this time more than 300km).
A circuit, in the room, on the floor:
Archer push-up x20
legs to heaven x20
pseudo planche push up x20
v-tucks x30
flutter kicks x100
planche push up x20
elbow-knee crunch x10 each side
cross mountain climb x20
bicycle crunch x50
pike push-up x20
squats x30
wide push-up x20
spider push up x10 each side
regular push up to failure
on alternate vacation days.
I eat cheese instead of fighting my way through hotel gyms.
Generally I add more miles to my riding.
Running to explore new places, but mostly just eating. Eating a lot.
Depends on the mood/vacation, but I will usually get a run or two in.
Usually like to squeeze in a daily 3-4 kph run to the bar, unless there’s a pool bar. In that case I’ll swim to the bar.
Try to keep the run trainings. Bike when possible.
While on vacation, I only do as much “training” as my young children want to do!
Vacations usually revolve around biking, for fun. No HRM, no timing, stop and take photos.
I run and I run more – 3times per day.
running. No racing on vacation, since that would pull from family time. I’ll usually take the treadmill, if that is an option and maintain the regimen.
All of my vacations become a racing vacation. This year we are taking a vacation to Canada for Ironman Canada….
I take the time to complete my program and do a little more
12oz Curls!
I have young children. Before I go away I scout out a short running route and leave with an ambitious plan to run every morning for 30 minutes. Usually I manage to get one or two in in a 1-week vacation.
vacations always include workouts and sticking to the plan but with more other stuff (hiking, biking, swimming or other). of course the ice cream and good eating is also key to any good vacation.
Depends completely on the time of year and destination. Preference is to bicycle unless it’s winter, and then I’ll xc ski. Some vacations end up being miles of walking every day with stops for gelato.
Training
Love to explore new places by running and getting lost there
Loads of hiking with weighted west and hypoxic swimming if possible.
Usually scale back. But try to continue to do some tempo runs.
vacation? do we have time for it?
But when it finally comes – snowboarding, motocross, wake boarding. Something that strengthens whole body muscles and is extremely fun! :-)
