It’s giveaway time! Partly because it’s been a while, partly because it’s Friday and it seems fitting, and partly just cause I’m on vacation and this seemed a whole lot easier than writing an in-depth review.
This time I’m giving away a Garmin Fenix3 multisport watch, sponsored by Clever Training. It’s the only watch I brought with me on vacation (yes, I know, only one watch – incredible!)
So how do you enter?
Simple: All you need to do is write a comment below with what type of training (or I suppose racing) you typically do on vacation. Do you cut back, or press on as per the schedule? Or does all training just simply shift to eating ice cream and chocolate bonbons?
The winner will get to choose any Fenix3 variant from Clever Training. This could be the base grey one (seen middle in photo above), or the more swanky Sapphire unit with the metal link strap. And then you can get it with or without the HR strap. Totally your choice!
As usual, Clever Training is sponsoring the giveaway. Remember you can save 10% off anything they sell through either the coupon code or the DCR/CT VIP program, plus of course free US shipping for goods over $75US.
Thanks for reading!
The giveaway entry period will run through Monday, April 27th, 2015 until 11:59PM US Eastern Time. Winner will be selected randomly. One entry per person. The product will then be ordered immediately and shipped immediately, assuming in stock.

During vacation we usually fall back to some running and some swimming…I mean hey it’s vacation :-)
The most important training lesson is recovery ;-)
When on summer vacation by sea in Croatia I love to run in early morning on costline pavement and swimm about 2km in sea.
Biking because i always travel on bike.
More time to train harder.
Typical vacation routine consists of morning runs, and often times afternoon hikes!
I usually cut back on focused exercise, but my vacations tend to involve a lot of walking about. Sometimes I will go for a run, but do more to explore the scenery instead of train. I have participated in a few 5k races while on vacation or at a conference.
Sunshine happiness and picking up weight for the rest of the training…
Today is the last day of my 5 day vacation. Monday was a small race, 3km run with a bit of orientering, had to find 10 bridges. Took 12 minutes 33 seconds. Afterwards me and couple of friends went out to mountain bike ride, saw a beatiful sunset. Wednesday, a 12km run with the same friends. Today few hours in a gym and a later a bit over hour bike ride. More fun and it gives you a boost if you can train or just go outside to enjoy the nature with friends. While working, its a bit harder to train regularly.
Last year we went to a 3 day bike hike. And we had two two-day conoe trips.
Active vacation!
Buns and cakes and long walks. Anything else and it is more like work than vacation.
Depends on the vacation and how close it is to my next race. Usually I just go with morning runs and there will be some swimming if a pool is available. I have a bike box now so bringing my bike along has been a positive experience so far.
I time vacations with races, so lighter pre-races drills!
I run if I have time, but if I’m on vacations I’m usually travelling so I prefer to visit!
Usually more running unless I bring my bike with. Also a bit more gym time if the hotel has a nice gym.
I always plan big runs/rides for vacation, but when i get there, it is party time :)
Definitely no serious training, but I try to put in a run/workout daily.
Vacation is usually an excuse to train every day but to varying levels, rather than intensive sessions in the normal working week. Can’t beat mixing up the running with some fell running or off road trail sessions!
Hike with one twin on the front in an ergo carrier and one in a back-pack or bike with toddler on a rear seat and twins behind in a trailer. Soooo…. mainly resistance work.
All about seeing new places, no better way than by foot or on bike ;-) if it’s warm enough I’ll always go for a sea swim too!
I eat a lot, with a side of running.
I try to get in some easy 30 minute runs to explore the area
During vacation I try to run twice a week. Unless, of course, when my vacation IS the workout – hiking, mountain biking, etc.
Mostly running, swimming or hiking, but don’t forget to enjoy the rest of the day.
running in new places – to capture new map data! Pack only shoes, 920XT and chest strap.
I keep on trying to smuggle my bike regardless of the fact that our car can never ever hold a bike and a family of three, let alone our recent expansion to four. As a result, Biking is largely limited to watching the TdF.
Basically I love to ride a bike in new places. Sometimes I do jogging excursion
My running shoes (and, currently, my Fenix 2) come with me on every vacation. If I’m training for a race, the schedule stays the same. If I’m not training, I go out for long easy runs to explore the area.
I stick to the program and run in the early morning hours. I run two marathons a year: one in April and one in Octomber, therefore summer is ideal for some heat and altitude training. The rest of the day I spend with my lovely family and enjoy my time.
Generally it reverts to an eat and drink a-thon. Walking and swimming do tend to feature, but less structured than non-holiday time. Getting back to training after a holiday is painful and depressing though.
Just once during the trips and more for fun than for training.
Always go outside, wheather it’s runnig or swimming, bike gets negelected.
I always plan on running but usually ends up with eating ice cream with the kids!
Ride a cruiser bike and go for some easy runs.
I love to run, wherever I am. On vacation I explore new trails ;-)
When I’m on vacation or business travel my exercise usually regresses to some simple runs around the hotel or condo. I like to turn my workouts into explorations when I’m able to bring my bike with me though.
i run early everyday. no better way to explore the places you want to take family later in the day
Vacation is a perfect time to mix training, recovery and family life. More time for training and recovery = increased load
I’m checking the local running heat map and then do easy but quite long runs. Helps also for site seeing when you’re short on time.
love to run in new places.
Try to carry on as usual. Just came back from vacation and I rearranged workouts so that the easier/shorter ones were while on vacation. After several years of training, I realized missing a few workouts here and there aren’t t detrimental.
I cut back because I’m pretty lazy :)
Press on! My husband and I are both active so we enjoy running together while on vacation.
Usually just a bit of swimming.
Good intentions, zero follow-through.
Try to fit around vacation plans. This year we’re off to France during mid-July…
Open water swim in warm water…
Training as usual if I’m not going anywhere on vacation. Or maybe the vacation is a cycling trip. Or I pack a pair of running shoes. Either way, swimming usually suffers. :)
Well… training continues on vacation but typically takes on a different form. Climbing dunes at the beach, golf, hiking rather than running and I get to do it during the day light hours rather than in the dark of the early morning.
I keep training so that I can be a bad person and eat bonbons, which in my case = pizza & beer
Best vacations are in the mountains so lots of biking and hiking.
When I am on vacation I try and squeeze a run in every day, but nothing more than 30-40 minutes. No structured workouts. And if I feel up for it I may add a couple of rounds of those 7 minute workouts, like the app you can download on your iPhone. Thats it. The rest of the time I try to enjoy time with the family, good food and wine. Because thats what vacation is all about!
I usually go on a run with my doughter (twice a week), not for my training but to get her to sleep a little earlier (she’s 8 now and has a lot of energy)
All depends on location of vacation. Last one was actually in California for relaxation. But it did involve morning runs at the piers and a 3 our hike to see the view.
Of course I eat my share of ice cream on vacation — and her share, too. But I also get in a run every day, per my “training” schedule.
Hope you enjoy yours. Although it hardly seems like you’ve worked hard enough to have earned it.
I save vacation time for week long or so shots at stretches in the mountains. Set three records myself and helped others at other times. I have a high daily stress job as an operations planner and somehow doing even higher stress activities helps bring me back to a workable level. Injuries last year have me carrying vacation over to this year. Come on.. late summer!
Just got back from Disney World with the family and got a couple of runs in. Actually found the best hotel for running, The Wildeness Lodge, had a nice 2.5 mile trail for running/biking plus a couple of “nature trails” that were good for running as well. Did a couple of 10ks during the week long trip.
When I go on vacation, I run a very slow marathon, sightsee and take bunch of pictures.
If vacation is more than just a couple of days, then I will get up early and run a few miles each day. A new Fenix 3 would make getting up a whole lot easier!
I tend to explore where I’m staying through running to and from local landmarks, through the back streets finding new places to go! Sadly this means no speed so generally remains a slow easy run
Press on as per the schedule, with a twist. For example, this past weekend in Virginia for a wedding: followed the Jack Daniels training program I am on with moderate quantities of Jack Daniels at the wedding reception. Great way to see a new area, keep up with training and also allow me to enjoy myself more – knowing that I had earned it.
Vacation! It’s vacation without training for me. Except walking in in beach, tavern to tavern……
Running.
I workout to work off my terrible eating during the vaca !!!!
I usually pack running shoes and clothes, and then they sit in my bag until the last day. At which point, I force myself to go for a run to justify having wasted luggage space with them in the first place. Not really terribly efficient training, but I usually get at least one run out of guilt alone.
Vacation is vacation! I continue to do some running but more as a way to explore the area near where I’m staying and to feel less guilty about the delicious food and libations ;).
Training is a little more lax on vacation, as I’m more prone to cheating on my normally good diet. I still try to log normal mileage, but I don’t quite go as hard as I normally do. it’s vacation after all!
Finally all time to focus some more on training, it is the perfect time for me to review my current training schedule, to see my results from past races and rethink current strategy. Also a good time to relax in my training and enjoy some more.
Try to forge ahead with running as much as possible. One vacation on a Bahamas out-island, I found an abandoned airport runway. That combined with all the “ancient” access roads enabled me to get a long run in during pre-Boston training.
The next race doesn’t shift back so my truing shouldn’t. In fact I can usually get a little more in since I don’t have to sit in an office all day. I can mix times, temps, conditions all to match.
Since vacations usually include additional walking and moving (swim, bike, etc) it’s not a horrible training regime. Of course when you couple that with additional caloric loading (in the form of ice cream, bon bons, and more wine than usual) it’s generally a net loss.
Have a great holiday with the Girl!
I always run some on vacation (have to offset all the extra food I invariably eat). I also love to look at the map of the U.S. and see all the great places me and my GPS watches have run. Great web site, love your passion and story.
Keep training acording program all the time :)
I just keep trainin… Running + Spartan workout
I always try to find a way to work my runs into the vacation schedule, especially if I can run some course or area that is very interesting. For example, I ran around a volcano once.
Lots of rest and a little biking.
I pack all my kit then ignore it and eat pie instead.
My vacation are usually training or racing vacation (tris or MTB), but in the race case of just a vacation I’d bring my running gear and then I feel less guilty about eating that icecream.
on vacation mainly easy cycling and long runs
For me depends where I am in my race schedule. If an upcoming race soon will try swim if possible and run. If no race coming soon will just run and ensure my hydration is well sorted ;)
I hit the margaritas first, then I run them off the next day! Depending on where I go, I might get in some climbing as well. It would be nice to Win a watch that could go with me and push me even when I’m on vacation. Pick me guys!!!!
I just run/cycle for the pure joy of it – I don’t look at the watch/pace/HR during it and just soak up the new surroundings. More often than not it is running over cycling as I sometimes don’t manage to convince the wife and kids that I “need” to bring my bike with me on holiday…
I usually try to run in a new town but I usually end up sleeping/partying too much…
I bring the bike and find the hills in the area.
On vacation I go for an easy one hour run at sunrise. I take extra time to breathe deeply and do extra stretching for my legs. I enjoy visiting new places and trying out new routes
I rarely do much training on vacation, as the trip involved my wife and son. But I do try to at least stay active. Thanks for the contest!
always try to fit in a run in new scenery
Running, cycling and hiking :)
Run more! Having more time allows me time to fit in more running and also cross-training.
Running or nothing. Definitely less than usual.
I make the most of having all the extra free time and train as much as possible :-)
run wherever i am, and swim depending on weather or not the hotel has a pool
My last holiday was essentially a cycling holiday, with some running and swimming thrown in.
I try to incorporate some type of training but for practical reasons mostly running and/or swimming since I can’t bring my bike. Also whatever is the local activity in a “cross training” fashion such as skiing in Colorado
I get up before the rest of the family and keep my normal training schedule. I actually work harder and run further on vacation. There is new things to see on the runs, it’s like an adventure
It depends on the vacation and the time of year (or, whatever my schedule is). If the only option is a treadmill, then I pass. Otherwise, I do try to get in a run (or several). I tend to focus on getting in miles, rather than any specific training, and give myself an opportunity to see the area I’m visiting from a different point of view.
vaction is a time to sit back relax and spend time with the family!
This holiday is all about preparing for the Ironman Maastricht. This means four weeks, six times a week, of rigid training in a little town under Maastricht, just above the border of Belgium. I will sleeping right next to the river, very convenient for all those swimming hours. And for running and cycling it is just paradise (Jep, the course of the Amstel Gold Race is right there). Limburg is super beautifull! So, even though the training will be hard, it will also defintely feel as a holiday:)
My favorite vacation is to be on island time…and therefore open water swimming in calm warm waters!
If I’m taking my bike, I probably train harder/longer since I have more time to train and recover.
On most vacations, swim, bike and run gear go with me. I’m typically out training before the family wakes up! I’m also finding that destination races can be a great way to plan family getaways.
My last three race-cations involved runs but my next one is Vineman. I see post race wine in my future!
Training on holidays is usually a chance to get some warm weather miles in. Nice long runs and Bike
You’re on vacation! You gotta enjoy the time off, the time with the family, and truly take a break from rigorous training we all do. If you’re so worried about training, don’t go on vacation! Maybe a light swim, quick run to sober me up, or a bike ride through the city to explore is about all I will do on vacation.. Now if I had a Fenix3, that may be a different story :)
