This morning I landed back home in Europe after being in DC for a couple days. In doing so, I increased my environmental temperature by approximately 50°F….to approximately 50°F. Just think, if I did that again it’d be like being in the Caribbean.
And then I remembered that everyone else stateside is left in the cold. The windy, snowy, icy…generally miserable cold. For you in Australia, you don’t get to complain at this juncture about your warm temps.
Thus, in order to make the situation a tiny bit better, I figured a giveaway was in order. It’s been a little while since the last one. Actually, sorta way longer than I realized. Not exactly sure how that happened, but we need to get that fixed pronto!
The prize is simple: A $400 credit to to Clever Training to buy anything from the site you’d like. You can use it on anything they offer, from a Garmin watch to a PowerBeam trainer. If the item is over $400US, you’ll simply pay the difference, shipping is free either way. The giveaway is open to all readers – including international folks.
To enter yourself in, simply leave a comment below with the following:
To Enter: Give me the lowdown on the coldest swim/ride/run you’ve had this winter – simple as that!

I thought riding in zero degrees in the rain up at King Lake was cold until I read some of these other comments. Crazy!
It’s actually summer here in Australia. Out on a road ride the other day I checked my GPS temperature and it said 45.6 degrees C as I was climbing up a 13% gradient. Granted, that was in the sun, but it was still hot.
The coldest run here in Malaysia was two weeks ago where it got down to 22 C at 4 am, my preferred time to run, since daytime temps are usually above 34 C.
Had a very cold ride a few couple weeks ago, mainly because I was unprepared. Thought I was heading out into 30 deg weather, forgot temps can drop as you head inland…
Nothing dramatic. Just a 10k in 12 degree F weather. No sweat.
Sunny California. Ran 10K this morning in about 39F.
Probably New Year’s Day this year. So dang cold that by the time I finished a VERY short, post-injury run, I had a cough I couldn’t kick for several days.
I live in LA (sorry!) and haven’t had many cold weather runs this year, but a few months ago it started raining mid-run and I was totally unprepared. Not the polar vortex, but it was cold!
-15°C with nasty wind in the face was coldest run this winter. On weekends I can run when the sun is up and it is much better -11°C.
Just a -5C-run here in germany, but snow, ice and a strong wind let it feel much colder.
No cold runs/rides this year so far due to lack of winter. A very wet and muddy bike ride getting home after work last week instead. Surprised by the rain and of course without any rain clothes.
The coldest run I’ve braved so far this winter was a -10F windchill. It actually wasn’t bad because I layered right, but getting the wind in the face still wasn’t ideal.
Avoided the super bad days by running on the TM this year, but was out on a recent mid-length run in the upper teens with a windchill in the negative teens!
I am new to winter running. I do notice that once I get going I warm up. Ran 6km at about 3deg C
Ran outside during sub-freezing temps and 15mph winds. By mile 3, my toes hurt. At mile 5, I couldn’t tell if the hurt stopped because I warmed up, or if I had lost feeling in my toes. After 7 miles and turning on the heater in my car, I became aware it was the latter; my feet and hands hurt for hours.
Waiting for spring…
-12°C 2.5h run
11 km run i 5 cm snow. -5 celcius = -15 celcius chill
Makes me feel warm in UK! Thought I would never say that…
2 hour run last Sunday in -6 degrees celcius, -20 wind chill… It was cold! :)
15C Bike ride for 1.5hours here in Cebu Philippines
swimming in a 8 celsius outside pool for 1h20 and then dip in the jacuzzi
Attempted to run in the polar vortex with windchill around -30F in WI. Didn’t last long. Other than that just your normal 5F winter runs.
I ran back-to-back runs on icy roads this week at 19 degrees with a wind chill “feels like” of 9 degrees the first day and 11 degrees the second. Not impressive to some, but I live in Alabama, where that is unheard of.
Coldest was actually a day out skying this Christmas in he French alpes. Went out for a while on a very windy day by -10c in the snow and ended up with icicles all over my beard..
Christmas Day run, since the local gym was closed. 7 frigid miles through town. Temperature was about 20 degrees. New snow on the ground, so my footprints were the only ones visible, literally, for miles. I’m primarily a treadmill runner, so this was pushing it outside of my comfort zone. p.s. Pick me!
Cold weather? What’s that? I live in California. I think the coldest workout was a run at night in the low 40s F.
Coldest run thus far was this past Saturday, 01/25. Temp on the house read 28.5* F, and I managed a paltry 2.71 miles (according to Movescount) before having to head home and get things ready for my son’s 2nd birthday party. By the time the party rolled around, the temp had climbed to the mid-60s, making for a perfect day, all the way around.
0F, but I live in Texas so can’t complain.
Coming from California, the coldest would probably be descending Mt Palomar in 2012 cold chill in California!
2 x 15K sessions into headwind at 2 deg C.
Coldest run – yesterday after a tram
Coldest so far…27F while on a weekend trip to Sunriver, Oregon. Ran in mask, skullcap, tights, insulated shirt and wind vest. Nice and toasty inside!
St. Cloud, MN. Wind chill around -30F. Aerobic run turned faster to limit the size of the sweatsicles and snotsicles growing quickly!

My “coldest” SBRs occur indoors at a balmy 70 degrees. I live in North Dakota for goodness sake! Only my really crazy friends go out in this crap. Go Seahawks!
Ran a 16 mile training run (for my early summer Ultra) in 6 inches of snow and average temp (per my tempe) was 19 degrees (fahrenheit).
My coldest run was with 3 degrees, wasn’t that cold but even if it was colder I had to run because I wanted to follow my scheme.
Not really cold but regard run a 5k loop in 6c weather here in the uk. Usually raining as well!
It’s been nippy here in Orillia. The coldest day I ran on was -17C with a windchill of -30C – that was nippy
its summer here now but last winter i did a few early morning runs in 2°C. it wasnt so bad…my face got really cold though.
i much prefer it to the 25°C mornings i’ve run in recently*
*not complaining, just pointing it out
Two hours training below cero and raining
My coldest run wasn’t really a cold one (8°C); I’ve been studying throughout december and january, so didn’t get much running at all. Looking forward to pick up where I left though!
looks like you may have some trouble with this one thanks to nested comments….
When i left my building to go for a run in mid January, a woman was coming in wearing an (outrageous) fur coat and was clearly bundled up to the max. I was wearing running tights, under armor and a tshirt. It was about 9* F and -5 wind chill. She gave me the world’s biggest Whiskey Tango Foxtrot/You must be crazy look – it was priceless. 10 minutes into the run I was warm and had a great time :)
Last week I did 14 km in Santa Caterina Valfurva (Italy) at -15°C (4°F).
36F tempo run in Pleasanton, CA the day after Christmas! It was refreshing, awesome and gorgeous! :)
I’d have to say 27 degrees was my coldest run, but the run that felt the coldest was a 20-miler in 40 degree weather when I wasn’t dressed warm enough. That was pretty miserable.
18°F not very cold this year !
This has been the coldest winter I can ever remember here in Iowa. So many cold runs, but I think the worst was -4 with a -19 windchill. Come on spring!
My coldest run (in suburban Paris) during this mild winter is a workout (17km) with a nice +1°C.
Coldest run for me this winter was ~10*F in Kansas City. Howling wind, too. Not a good day to get out on the roads but races don’t train for themselves.
-12 degrees C, disgusting headwind, snow and freeeeezing toes..
Oh what 400 could do…
We get some cold up in Maine, but not quite as cold as the midwest is right now! I think my coldest run this season was 10 miles in -5 F with wind chill down to -15F. It was not fun.
Some 5ºC… winters are pretty manageable around here! :)
Its not been that cold this winter in the uk, just very wet. But last weeks XC running race in driving wind, rain, hail, thunder and lightning was interesting to say the least. The coldest ride of the year is from back at the end of May when I started getting a bit hypothermic on a 40 minute alpine descent in the snow and rain.
Just wet in Ireland, yet another flood warning!
I have cheated this winter & for the most part stayed on the treadmill. But I got tired of the ‘mill & headed out one morning when it was 30 degrees, overcast with a NW wind of 15. Cold enough for me! I’m from the south!
Ran basically straight up Mt. Tamalpais before dawn with some dudes way out of me league. View from the top was amazing and the run down was a little more fun than the run up.
On Christmas vacation in CO it was about 10F, I ran inside on treadmill. I’m from FL, so running outside was out of the question!
I live in Australia…soo…I did a swim outdoors in 19ºC, does that count?
I’ve been running every day this winter through this Polar Vortex… Coldest day was a 0 degree day with 25-30 mph winds for feels like of -20ish… Did 8 miles that day and hated life the whole time
I’ll try not to be too bitter when I see some cold runs in the 50’s. Being in northern WI it hasn’t been above 20 in what seems like months. Coldest was -10 with -20 wind chill
I ran a 5k race last weekend in New Jersey. It was 15 degrees, 9 w/windchill.
I set 3 PRs: fastest mile, fastest 5k and coldest 5k.
I was wearing my Garmin 220, received as birthday present from wife via Clever Training. (Including DCR 10% discount)!
I’m on the Sunshine Coast in Aus so in comparison nothing I do is cold. Rugby training in winter in the rain is cold though. Heading to Norway shortly so things will change!
-10 fat bike ride in cold minnesota
A nice run around my neighborhood during a snow. It was 22 degrees Fahrenheit with light snow falling and about 2 inches on the ground. The neighbors thought I was nuts running (with my YakTrax). I also learned that snow plows are big and scary when you are running. All my other cold weather (-10 F) runs have been inside on the dreadmill…
rode 13 miles round trip to the library. 33 degrees with winds 15 to 25 mph
4 mile run in snow and 10 degrees
It must have only been 20 deg, but I wasn’t wearing a vest or fingered gloves on the ride and I was too determined to not get dropped from the ride. My hands were absolutely numb.
Chapel Hill NC….2 days ago. Low teens. 1st snow of the year. 5 mile morning run. Creature of habit…..
This winter is not too bad so far, a few rides and runs near 0ºC, but mostly in the 5-8ºC range. Hopefully no late snows like last year… :)
My coldest ride was last Tuesday. It was about 50º and that’s way too cold for me! I need to win so I can buy cold weather gear!
BCS Marathon in College Station TX on December 8, 2013 when it was 30 degrees. Living and training in Houston TX did not prepare me for having to run 26.2 miles in that temp which was a bitter cold experience.
I live in the beautiful Pacific Northwest. It’s a great place to be a runner because even on the coldest days it’s not so bad. But that doesn’t stop me from complaining ;) On Saturday January 25th my running buddy and I ran 7 miles starting at 7:30 am. At that time of the morning the sun is coming and warming up to a balmy 34 degrees. My Garmin 405 tells me we did an elevation gain of 172 feet. On the way up I could see the steam billowing out of my running partner’s body. On the way down our goals was to keep from sliding on the ice hiding in the shade of the tall evergreens. I love this place. I’ve had my 405 for five years and I’d love a 220. Thanks DCR!
-42ºC in Calgary. Needless to say the run was very short.
I wish I had a better tale, it’s been so mild this winter. The coldest run I’ve done is a 35ish degree 2 laprun through Lincoln Park.
Houston Marathon training, december 2011. 33 deg and raining.
1 hour swimming last winter (60 F).. Some regions of Brazil do not have winter :)
I live in the Caribbean and last week I ran 10 miles on 73 F weather which is the
coldest I’ve had in the Metro area.
In December last year, my partner and I travelled from sunny Brisbane Australia (where it’s sitting at 40ºC with a whole bunch of humidity) off to the cloudy shores of Dublin Ireland where the temperature rarely got above freezing.
While we were over there, we entered the local parkrun (5km organised event) in Malahide, there was a nice breeze blowing to adding to the chill factor and we stood there in our summery running kit! It was quite a shock to the system, and for the first km I thought there was something stuck in my left shoe – turns out my foot was just partially frozen!
It was all a bit of a shock to the system at first but we really enjoyed it and came home with all limbs in tact.
At one of my running groups, I ended up running with a girl that can’t run alone (she needs a buddy because she is autistic and can’t follow directions or traffic laws independently). Normally we are about the same pace (she is faster than me at races), but for some reason that day she slowed waaay down. I went from doing 9 minute miles at the start to doing 11 minute miles the last 5 miles. Also, she had 8 miles planned, so instead of doing a fast 6, I ended up doing a slow 8. All this would have been perfectly fine, except for one thing: I had dressed for a fast 6. I only had a headband on my ears (no hat), my light running gloves (vs. mittens), nothing on my face (no Buff) and a lighter top than I would have if I had known I would be going so slow and it would be that cold. It wasn’t *that* cold Saturday (I think like 7 degrees?), but I have never been so cold in my life. I was still freezing after 10 minutes in the sauna at the gym. Ugh.
My coldest run was this January when it was 17 degrees outside. My mouth was so frozen and numb that I couldn’t speak without slurring my words.
I did 6.5 mi last Friday, it was 15*F with a -4* windchill.
Ran 10 mile tempo 2 weeks ago in the dark 6am, 15 degrees, wind chill in the single digits. Then it started to snow. Way cool. And those post run pancakes and hot chocolate tasted fantastic!
Dude, it’s Summer here…..so 25C and a nice cruisy ride. Mind you, winters not that bad either!!!!! Lol. Cheers.
Yesterday. Sub-zero windchills in Minnesota (balmy compared to recent weeks). Went on a run and thought I was going to lose my face about halfway in.
Because it’s been so cold, I …**cough**… **cough**… haven’t been training outside very much. Ok – at all. I did, however, ride a CitiBike home during the polar vortex – in a suit – when the windchill was about 2 degrees.
12 degrees running on icy ground with stiff wind. took all day to warm back up
Living in Fairbanks, Alaska we had plenty of opportunity for cold runs and skis until all our snow and cold weather headed south and landed on Atlanta and in MN. Chilliest run so far this winter was in November at -28oF.
9 mile run, 10 degrees F with windchill temps to -5F.
I live in the mountains of the Dominican Republic, where it’s spring all year long. It was below 15 C one morning and the locals were bundled up like it was below 0. It did make for a crisp 7 mile run.
Coldest ride of the winter was the bike leg for IM70.3 Canberra, it was 16 degres C at the start and around 20 degrees C by the time I finished. I live and train in Townsville, FNQ, Australia so its quite warm and humid here at this time of the year….. appologies to all of you in the northern hemisphere. Train safe and enjoy the cold, cos it beats heat and humidity any time.
Tomorrow’s polar bear plunge for special Olympics for my kids at school…it’s going to take the cake hands down!
Missouri lakes in January…brr…
Dec 31, Yes New Year’s eve in Ottawa, Canada. Ran a 10K that night along the Ottawa Canal, temperature was -23.4C without the windchill. Picture it!
I had a beer later.
-K
Did a run a couple of weeks ago, it was 12 degrees, windchill was 6. I was afraid I didn’t have enough layers on the bottom half, so I was worried my legs would be cold. Well, they never felt cold, because I couldnt feel them at all!
The Coldest Swim I have even done? Oh, I know this one.
One November, my father-in-law was on vacation in Hawaii when he suddenly remembered that he did not turn on or off something on his boat. His boat was moored about 200 yards out into the Atlantic Ocean off the southeast of Rhode Island. Being the great son-in-law I am, I got in my car, drove an hour to the beach, got my wet suit on (while still in the car), and swam out to the boat.
While I don’t recall whether I was supposed to switch something on or off, I know that when I finally got to the boat, whatever I was supposed to do was already done.
So I swam back to shore, took off my wet suit (in the car), and drove to Starbucks to get the largest hottest tea they offered. Afterwards, I called my father-in-law to update him. He was glad because worrying about his boat was ruining his tropical vacation in Hawaii.
I live in Brazil :D My coldest workouts are the ones I do when it’s raining!
38F on a Saturday in December. I live in California so this is as cold as it gets.
The run from my office to the gym to use the treadmill is about as hard core as I get in cold weather. More power to those that enjoy layering up!
All I can say is watch out for frozen horse poop on the roads this time of year in UK…
Need I say more?
