Just did my coldest run ever this week here in Pennsylvania. 9 degrees Fahrenheit!
Ice Trail last week end near Paris. Had to go there with my car on a very sloppy and snowy highway. Then it was a white trail, all the trail was covered with snow, it was beautiful but very very cold :)
Since I’m from a warm country, everything for me these seasons is cold. Ok, last year on an Olympic triathlon somewhere in October (yeah October, Texas has this crazy 40 F degrees whether changes from one say to another) I started the swim portion at about 42F, by the time, lost some time in T1 putting on a bike jacket (freaking cold) and ended up running at about 45F with only my Tri suit. I had to borrow a cel to call my wife to rescue me from the cold and bring me a jacket….:)
I’m a FL girl and went to visit my brother in Denver. I don’t have pants that go to my ankles or socks that come above them. I anxiously awaited the sun to rise high enough so the temp would at least crack 32F before I headed out. It did and I had a nice run through the mall down to the river, but it was the oddest feeling being hot, sweaty and freezing all at the same time.
My coldest anything ever was trekking around the Annapurna circuit in the Himalayas in the middle of winter. Everything up there is run on hydro power but all the rivers freeze, so there’s no power! That experience has certainly put my snow-covered London winter runs into perspective!
Ever tried snowboarding at -28C? It’s fun, except for the skilift part, when you’re freezing your rump off :)
Running along the lake at night on a night so windy I could barely move forward without being blown backwards! -10 without the wind.
Living in Texas it gets cold but not too cold usually. 2years ago it was a balmy 18F, so cold parts of White Rock lake froze. That along with the lake breeze it was around 10F at the 5:30am start of our “loop” (9mile) around the lake
My coldest run was the NWM in San Francisco…not because it was THAT cold, but because the forecast said the balmy 66 degrees at the start line would turn to 75 and sunny by a few hours later, but instead a storm came through and we ended up running in 45 degrees, pouring rain and awful sea spray. Being dressed for 65-75 wasn’t pleasant. And they ran out of space blankets at the finish. Yuck!
Well, my coldest run was at -19°C, when I should have been on my snowboard. But with the wind on the glacier, it definitely was too cold for that, so I got back down and out running. :-)
Coldest run I did was on a Sunday afternoon in Cape Town, mid winter. It was pouring with rain and I was wearing full leggings, jacket, beanie and buff covering my face (only had my eyes peering out). I got a couple of funny looks but I thoroughly enjoyed the run.
Also, thanks for the great website!
Greetings from Sweden! It is cold here right now so pack extra warmth. Also a good idea to bring the Yaktrax for traction otherwise it can be very slippery.
My coldest running temp isn’t that cold, probably about 10F with blistering winds, BUT the coldest I’ve ever been on a run was at the end of the Nike Women’s Marathon in the finishers chute waiting for my friends to finish in the damp windy day.
Coldest run was about 18F and windy. But the coldest workout I’ve done recently was a crossfit class when they forgot to turn the heat on in advance. Trying to grip and swing a kettlebell when you can’t feel your hands makes for a spicy workout!
-5°C in the snow, Bute park in Cardiff. Although, the continued winter training and that particularly cold endeavour has left me with Achilles issues… Hopefully with a bit of rest, I’ll be out again but in the warm spring weather!! :D
My coldest run was in lake geneva 5 years ago minus 12, it was so damn cold i even had teeth pain.. next time i stay home with rollers.
Cycling at 5 in the morning, thinking it’s never cold in Mumbai and then getting frozen to death. It was the coldest day for last 10 years. Think I deserve that FR910XT very much.
2011 Mercedes half marathon. 20 degrees at the time the race started. Once we got going it wasn’t that bad, bad part was after the racetrack friend Laura and I were covered in sweat, freezing, and took us about an hour and a half to find my wife who was picking us up, because we didn’t really set out a “meeting spot”.
“I’ll find you” doesn’t really work with thousands of people wandering around…..
And I need a watch.
My coldest run was at -18 °C in a snow storm in the Rhoen (central German uplands) about two years ago. I was only out for 45 minutes, but still my face was cluttered with ice crystals. Anyway that definitly was an experience I do not want to have missed and I would do it again anytime. Currently it is around -6 to -8 °C in Germany daytime with icy streets (more sliding and drifting than running), but you can get used to nearly any circumstances. ;-)
About 2 years ago, my dad and I headed out for a 10 mile trail run. It was -8 degree F when we started and -2F when we finished. We had to keep stopping to de-ice our eye lashes and eye brows so we could see. My father’s beard was completely iced over by the end of the run. The woods were beautiful and well worth the effort.
So cold I’m only skiing now!
My coldest run? It was last night. The wind chill was -28 degrees Celsius. It was my first trail run in a new town I just moved to. It was absolutely brilliant running through the woods in the pitch black by the light of your head lamps. Looking forward to joining this group that gets together every Thursday.
It’s 5am and the mercury is in single digits outside and not much warmer in the pool. Rain is pouring in sideways due to the wind, and myself and the rest of the squad are standing behind the coaches whiteboard in speedos getting the session explained too us. Diving into the icy waters was like getting a slap in the face. Body instantly feels numb like pins and needles. The first few laps are fast trying to get the body warm but it doesn’t take long before we slow down into a rhythm and begging to freeze. Longest 90min pool session of my life!
Coldest run had to be the 12 mile group run down Rock Creek Park in Washington DC several years ago. I don’t remember the exact temp but it was something like 10 F not including chill factor and -10 with the wind. What I do remember most is 3 things; 1) having no doubts my friends would be there at the start despite the crazy cold temps, 2) the way beautiful snowflakes formed on our eyelashes and needing to use lubricant to make sure they didn’t freeze to our cheeks, 3) the look we got from the Rock Creek Park ranger as we ran past him.
I’ve only been running (outside) since September so my coldest run is actually coming up on Sunday. I’m oddly looking forward to it!
Two years ago during Thanksgiving I went back home to Flagstaff, AZ (it’s at 7200ft) from Miami with my wife and daughter. I decided to go for a run one morning, put on leggings, wool cap, gloves, compression shirt, running jacket, and shoes. I made it about 3/4 of a mile before giving up… First the frost on the ground was making it really hard to get into a comfortable stride, second my eyes started to water and the tears were freezing to my face. I believe it was 3F that morning.
I don’t know what my coldest run has been. But, my most miserable was on a cold day when my foot slipped off a rock and splashed into a stream I was crossing. Nothing like having 1 soaked foot in the cold to make the rest of your run miserable.
-15 C 2 years ago everyone was asking what i was doing …
Cleveland metroparks, zero degrees, fresh snow, bright sun = beautiful!
Stockholm Marathon 2012. Ice cold rain and 4 degrees C for almost 4 hours. That was cold….
Hmmm, have had several cold memories but recently last week was pretty damn cold. Long run of 27 kilometers, of which the first 13 was with headwind at about -7 making the windchill feel like -15.. Almost inpossible to dress for those circumstances while being able to run proparly :)
-20deg C running from the sauna to a fresh cut hole in the ice for a dip in the water.
-4 on a January morning in Japan. Glad I wasn’t barefoot.
Did track intervals this week this week with just shorts and a T-shirt… everyone else was in sweats, jacket, hat etc… not saying I’m tough, I just warm up and overheat easy. What made it funny was while cooling down someone asked me where I was from that this weather didn’t affect me… I pointed at my tattoo on my leg (tat of my home state), laughed and said Hawaii… blew this guys mind
We had just deployed to a base in northern Afghanistan in January. It was one of the last helo flights in, the wind chill was affecting the blades on the helicopters. We got off and met the people we were replacing, not having been exposed to any type of current events for the past week we asked how cold it was. -17F! A couple of hours later, to beat the jet lag, I went on a quick short run, it couldn’t have been much higher than the -17 earlier as my eyebrows were well frosted a short distance into the run. The quick 2 mile run felt much longer than that as I was questioning my sanity for being out in such stupidly cold conditions. Needless to say It was treadmill runs till spring!
Remember track practice in middle school. Feb in Buffalo,NY and running a 5 miler in sideways snow and only 10 degrees out. Coach told us it would make us tougher when it got warmer…. Still think about this every time I run on the cold because it does not make any sense.
frozen beard during a freezing half-marathon 4-5 years ago
My coldest ride was a ride to work. I live in Texas, so it doesn’t get REALLY cold, but we are also not used to cold so that counts for something. I rode to work when it was 20 degrees F out. By fingers and toes were numb and I couldn’t feel my lips.
I thought about running in the cold *once*. Am I worthy of the 910? :)
My coldest run may have been this week, when I made the mistake of not layering up for the winter weather. The next day, I made sure to wear 3 layers of clothing.
My coldest run would have been earlier this week where we’ve had bellow -25C temperature all week in Montreal. Properly layered up, the cold is not that bad but the problem really is the sidewalks and roads that are just constantly getting icier; it seems even abrasives ice up!
We’ll be back to season’s average next Tuesday when it gets more around -10! :)
I have joined triathlon club last year.I will hit 40 this year so I was completely out of shape but slowly I noticed some progress in cycling running and swimming .Last year in November I decided to join club cycle as they do it every week .With no cycling shoes on me just runner , and obviously no cleat pedals and no leg warmers I join the cycle with quite a confidence because I was putting a lot of pressure on my biking lately (I was doing cycling like twice a week 40-50 km each).
We hit the road starting off Marley Park in Dublin .The temperature wasn’t so bad -4C but it was quite windy.
So the first few km was ok before we hit hills in Powerscourt .I was struggling as we were climbing the hills and of course I was last in my group .Than the worst came to deal with . Because I had no overshoes after a while I couldn’t feel my toes ,honestly I couldn’t even move them at all.But I was stubborn , peddling up the hills wearing only runners ,almost coughing my lungs out and feeling kinda a sick. My group was barely visible now and all the boys and girls were in front of me so I really felt crap and but didn’t want to give up.
Unfortunately when we hit the final hill which was very steep I got of my bike and start walking up the hill pushing my bike .Finally cycle marshal came back for me and escort me back to Marley Park. I needn’t tell ya I was quite embarrassed and as for my toes I got the feeling back 4h. later.
Now ,learnt from my painful experience I do not go out cycling without been well warped up .As for my fitness
…I already singed up for my first Marathon in Limerick in May this year.
My only and coldest runs have been this winter. I’ve never enjoyed running outside, but now totally look foward to it (within reason), meaning I don’t run outside when it’s under about 15F. I think it was 17F one night, it was cold, it was beautiful and invigorating and it made me feel alive!!! Looking foward to my Saturday run, as long as it isn’t super windy.
Last Feb, I ran a half Marathon it was 18 degrees out with 20+ mph winds and the course went on an overpass over the lake so there was no wind break there, it was the coldest I’ve ever been. My sock hat had frozen on the outside (and the the strings on the side of it also). I finished it, set a new PR but missed my goal by just over a min. It’s coming up again in a few weeks and it’s been pretty cold this year too…
Following a New Years resolution to train in the mornings instead of the early evenings posed quite a challenge for myself and my two Labradors this past Tuesday morning. With the cold front moving through most of the U.S., it was 17 degrees before the wind chill. With the wind chill is was 2 degrees. That was the quickest run we have done in quite a while. It is amazing what cold can motivate a person to do just to get back to being warm.
The coldest run will probably be tomorrow, -10 degrees for the day :) Keep on running!
A few hours ago, less than 10 degrees Celsius out there. I love Germany! with clever clothing… :)
Richmond, morning was 18F. Windchill, well I was afraid to look! Fortunately I was fine after 2 miles on the run. After 2 miles, my only concern was 20 mph wind gusts. I was glad to be home.
My coldest run?
I live in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil and I was visiting my girlfriend’s family in Helsinki, Finland in mid April 2012.
My future brother-in-law invited me for a run (as you know, the temperature in Rio is NEVER below 15º Celcius on the coldest day of the year) and we went for a run on a temperature of less than 5º Celcius (with lots of wind and for me, feels like 0º C or less! lol).
It was a short run, but long enough for me to be sure not to run again on that trip!
How about an entry from Sweden here …. !!
Out for a bike ride the other day and came home looking like this. Temperature in Göteborg was -16C, but add some wind and the windchill gives me -25C. And I think I found my limit….
When I was young I used to swim a lot at Oreti Beach which is just south of Invercargill at the bottom of New Zealand…. next stop south… the South Pole. The stupid part was I never thought to wear a wetsuit and swimming in the middle of winter never felt like a silly idea. Maybe I should have worked out that when you couldn’t feel your legs and arms and your hair is freezing stiff I probably should have found a nice warm indoor pool somewhere….
Traveling in and out of Moscow a few winters ago, I had to do many of my runs in the approaching Russian winter. I ran in a park near the apartment where I was staying, with temperatures dipping well below freezing, and snow and ice on the ground. I often finished my runs with ice crystals covering the scarf I wore across my face to protect me from the wind. In retrospect, as a foreigner in Moscow, I probably should not have taken to the streets with a black mask covering my face; but fortunately, I am no worse for wear.
Not sure how cold it was but my sweat (& snot) froze to my forehead…pretty cold I guess
Not so cold, actually. Started to run recently, and never sub-zero (celsius). 2 or 3 degrees feel cold, though!
I love a run on a cold day. If you’re dressed properly and have the appropriate gear, I’ll take a run over summer hot and muggy conditions. Plenty of cold early morning runs here in Toronto through the winter… -20 degrees C with -30 windchill isn’t too rare.
First tri I did it was 40 degrees at the start of the swim but the water was not wetsuit legal. Freak cold spell was the cause. Needless to say I froze on the bike and I ran on 2 frozen blocks of ice called my feet.
The coldest run that sticks in my head happened just after Christmas, it was probably 30F and I wasn’t prepared. I tried to run in shorts and a long sleeve shirt. I made it just over a mile and a half before calling it quits.
Two years ago mountain biking on Christmas Eve at 11pm. Everything froze, water bottles, headlamps, everything.
Coldest run years ago was 14 degrees. I ran through some sand and – it was was frozen solid! I don’t run anymore so coldest recent ride 30 degrees.
I used to ride to work almost every day in winter when I was young and broke. I wore ski goggles, ski pants and parka, balaclava, regular winter boots, lobster gloves, and tire chains for my bike. Now I just remember how cool I was, not how cold I was.
Denmark, last 7 days. Had one run at -8C/18F, mild breeze, another at -11C/3F, little windy, at the bay of Kaloe and one near the NE of Aarhus. So cold that the air gets crisp-isch and 3 layers of clothing still felt cold in a heated body when I got home, home being uphill. I couldn’t stand it for more than 1 hr(or 54 min active).
I know some people run in way worse conditions so I don’t consider them special.
My coldest was in January 1994 when I was in a night march/hike with some other scouts and had to walk/run 20-21km over both tarmac/terrain in 3 hrs with no watches and no thick jacket and no breathable clothes and with a 10kg minimal backpack. Oh and no cell phones or walkmans etc. Temperature was -19 degrees in the night and after an hour of intense walking, several were freezing so much they bowed out and waited for the pickup car. I and two others decided to try and run for an hour and then hopefully get warmer and walk the rest after that, figuring that would do it. We got there 35 min before the others and before the welcoming comitee had hot tea and soup ready for us, so we 3 frozen, shaking scouts in wet clothes even helped the nice lady make that too in the un-insulated forest hut with no heat but a campfire we made outside, god that soup was good. My friend had a frostbite in his face a burn on his tongue from drinking the soup too fast :)
Just returned from a very cold run (-8C and windchill), but felt like a wimp when i saw another runner take a post-run dive in an ice hole. Respect :)
This winter in Wroclaw, Poland doing many running trainings in -10 C and snow (10-15 cm) + ice (45 min. up to 1,5 h). Few years ago 2 hours bike ride through the city in -10 C and snow 15 cm.
Running the other night. It was very cold very very cold
Did the Rock N Roll half marathon in Savannah in 2011. It was so cold that some runners were picking up other runners discarded sweatshirts and putting them on
Coldest so far was a couple of weeks ago when I took the dog out for a run in -14 C. After some “warming up”, I made attempts at some 4×4 intervals. I used my cycle computer to measure the laps and had to drop the glove on my right hand to avoid dropping it. The fingers came back to normal operation level during the following 5km with easy jogging.
Having wool under my normal running clothes and a buff to protect my chin and ears it was quite nice actually and I have had several runs since in 10 +/- C
My coldest run was last Tuesday (Ottawa, Canada) when it was -20C without the wind.
Last weekend runnning on the south coast of Engald – Does not often snow here but there was still some on the tops of the hills. Great way to start a Sunday morning.
I live in Maine, on the side of a mountain… went for a run the other day – just 2.5 miles around the mountain I live on… problem was it was -5 out and Breathing was a problem. come to find out, on the downhill, so was standing… i hit a piece of icy ground and got to slide down about 20 feet of the run… all in all, at least I finished the thing without any major bruises! I would absolutely love a 910xt for my Tri training up here… Ide be able to hit more trails and know how far I’ve run as well as finding my way home! Thanks for the blog!
my coldest run was recently, in boston, in what the weather forecast said was -10F with the windchill. it was awful. i just want low-20s again, i promise i won’t complain. :-)
Bike Training for the Ötztal Marathon in Tyrol’s Mountain… http://www.oetztaler-radmarathon.com
We started off in the morning at around 10 degrees Celsius. When we aimed to the first mountain (Kühtai) it started to rain first and then it turned into snow. On top we had minus 4 Celsius with snow.
The downhill was awful and it was so cold that the entire bike was shaking because me shaking like hell…
A couple of years ago a co-worker and I did a lunchtime 5k run when it was about 6F. We lost the feeling in our faces at about the halfway point. Luckily, we were laughing about it on the way back to the office.
my cousin Tanya was visiting me in D.C. and I told her we would go on a fun jog in the snow and end at the back entrance to the zoo, which is a great place to run and super cool when it is snowing. unfortunately it was snowing so much that they closed, and we were stuck around the back with the temperature dropping. it was a tough twenty or thirty minutes until we made it around to Cleveland Park area and found a bagel shop to warm up in. now she lives in D.C. and when I visit she gives me the business about what a great tour guide I was that day
Last winter in austria. 3 hours cross country skiing by -16C° and high wind. Tomorrow i wil try a long run at -12C° in Berlin.
Living in Connecticut and training early in the morning cold is a way of life during winter months.
I’ve done many runs in sub 10 degree darkness.
The cold runs are the ones where you take off your hat and it keeps it shape due to the ice on it.
Coldest ride was a century ride in North Fork, CA. Weather dumped 12″ of snow the friday before the ride. We showed up oblivious in shorts and fall gear. The original route couldn’t be finished because of all the snow above 6k ft. We ended up riding ~50mi straight up out and back. I’ve never been so cold for so long.
Running 10k around skiing route in Riga, Latvia, two weeks ago, when it was -18C and really windy. Had to concentrate on breathing through nose, since the air was too cold to breathe throung mouth. Fortunately, everything was fine after this run.
Not the run necessarily, but standing around for over an hour waiting on the Hot Chocolate DC 15K was pretty bad.
I didn’t pack very well on my recent trip home to Kansas City for Christmas. It was board shorts weather were I came from… so that’s what I wore to the MidWest. It was not board shorts weather there…
The temp was 12 degrees. The windchill considerably lower. I sprinted out of the house to get semi-warm… and just kept going as long as I could. I eventually ended up stopping in an upscale department store to warm up and rest for a minute… wandering around looking at all the pretty christmas decoration, I got more than a few looks.
It was fun!
Last night went for a 9m run with my dog after work. I was bundled like a snowman but I quickly learned the temp/wind limits of my “windstopper” gloves. When i got home I had two purple thumbs and debated putting them on the griddle with my steaks! At least the dog never complained during the run and got some steak scraps as a reward!
Used to have a 3.5 mile run commute in Montana wear my breath would cause condensation to form on my eyelashes and when i blinked my eyes would freeze shut and I would have to manually open them.
Competing in a cross country race I was breaking the ice on top of the puddles.
Set out for my weekend long run. It was a nice snow coming down and about 20*. As I got out there the winds picked up to about 20-30mph and the light, fluffy snow turned over to sleet. All of the water on the roads from the snow the salt was melting froze. I ended up a few miles from home with sleet hitting him in the face and falling every few feet from the ice. I finished 14 miles.
My coldest run was two years ago. I don’t know what the temperature was but I ended the run with ice and frost covering my mustache and goatee. I looked like some kind of weird snow beast running in Pa
For me cycling is always colder than running(windchill factor). It was a 60 mile road race just last year where it started at about 34 degrees F and raining for the hour before and first ten miles then got colder. Everything started to freeze including the road, rain and worst of all me and my clothes.
My coldest was also my best yet. It was at night, in Petrópolis, an imperial city, just beside Rio de Janeiro/Brazil. The cold that we experience here is nothing like you have in US, but 6 degrees celsius is already cold enough for brazillians! ;-)
Our local running club sponsors a January Freeze series. Four weekends of running in the cold North East. The coldest I have been is at this race whne at the end one of my eyelids was frozen shut. Thanks for a great blog!
Coldest run got to be in Scotland, running up Arthur Seat. Around 2 degrees. No cold gear, just a rainproof jacket to help retain a bit of warmth. The rest of the runs back home are around 30-35 degrees.
My coldest run was in February last year. It was around -14 °C, so had used next to some isolating layers a buff over my mouth and nose. That raised my heartrate a bit, but helped to run around 16km through the forest on beautiful snow trails and it was one of the nicest early morning together with my girlfriend.
Probably not the coldest but a good snowy run last Friday evening here clause to Paris along “les bords de marne” . a bit slippy but quite pleasant one.
Running 11 miles at 3:30 a.m. today in Chapel Hill, NC was pretty darn cold!
Running in Norway in mid-February a couple of years ago, wearing hot, gloves, spikes under my shoes, in the dark with snow everywhere. Couldn’t stop or breathe through the mouth, it was too cold. A great run!
Last saturday enjoyed myself with 20 km run in -16C degrees (accuwather website said that in this conditions feals like -23C). Action in Lithuania :)
my coldest will be to everest base camp coming april. The timing is just perfect to win this garmin…
Running this past weekend in Upstate NY ~12 degrees. Didnt feel bad until I realized the layer of frozen snot connecting my nose to my chin.
40* at the Hot Chocolate Run in Chicago last year. Not too bad, really.
Running here in Sweden on the winter is always cold, but I try to not run when it’s colder than -15°, but down to that it kind of okay.
Even though I live in Boston, my coldest was in North Carolina. Probably only in the teens or 20s, but I still got frost crystals forming on my wool cap.
Last week. -6 F. I lasted about 6 minutes. Definitely not worth it.
Coldest run. Steamboat Springs, CO. I know it was below zero because it had been do for days. I was cold but the altitude plus the biting cold air burned my longs. That was worse. It was a short run.
