Last Christmas, the early morning of the first Christmas Day, very long run with my beloved sister in the polish bad-ass winter! Oh, it was coold… But we made it and scored ~15km run!
last month I ran about 1/2 a mile through flood water as my local trail run had flooded out and didn’t realised when I set off. Temperature was around freezing, and I lost feeling in my feet after about the first 30 yards.
i run with shorts at -12 degrees but stayed warm because wearing 5 layers on my shoulders ;-) but legs always must stay free while running !
My knees won’t let me run in any temperature but I do love getting on my bike. I am determined to do more miles this year than last which can be a challenge here in Denver. A couple of weeks ago it was about 10 degrees but dry so I decided to go out and ride. my mustache froze so solid that it hurt to smile, or move. It felt like it was slowing ripping out each hair. The air was so cold that it hurt to breath. But it all went away when I got done, thawed out and logged a few miles to start 2013. The only thing to make it better would be… yeah… that’s right, a new Garmin!
High 30’s & pouring down rain the whole 10.5 miles, nothing was dry & left one big puddle after I got inside.
I may live in the south but that doesnt mean it doesn’t get tbgetThe coldest run I’ve done was 17 degrees F with wind chills in single digits.
A few years ago, I thought the weather was okay to run: overcast, 3°C… seemed ok to me. I went out with no hat, not gloves, no vest… I hadn’t anticipated that leaving my street, I would face that much wind… after 4-5 minutes, I was freezing… and then it started to rain. I’ve never been that cold, I didn’t feel my fingers and feet when I got back home, and my ears hurt so much I couldn’t even touch them!
Must be Egmond half marathon. Every year, second weekend of january. Running on the beach and in the dunes with minus 5 (Celsius), a classic!
It was only a 5K in Racine, WI, a “jingle bell” run, but it was out and back about 100 feet from Lake Michigan with a howling wind in your face from the North East (from the frozen lake). It brought tears to my eyes from the searing cold, but y’know, we had a good time.
Running on a cold winter day in Athens, 5 C, extra moisture in the park and I was wearing a short and a t-shirt!
The heat is on….
My most memorable and coldest run was last January 2012. The temps were in the teens, but near zero when the wind chill is factored in; however, it was a nice sunny day. To make matter worse, I was sick, but I was determined to run my (shortened) 8 miles anyway despite the possible stupidity of that decision.
My coldest run was just the other day. The windchill was well below zero (F) and my legs stung from the cold. I ended up turning around and heading home early.
Gdansk, Poland, Yesterday evening with my boyfriend we ran down the alley along the sea. The wind was killing us! :)
The day I picked-up my father from the hopital after he had his open heart surgery. It was -5ºF, my buddy and I did 5 miles and both of us had ice on our beards.
I don’t envy anyone that lives north of me at all! I ran a 5k in November of 2008, and it was 26F. After warming up in a jogging suit, I was able to run it in shorts, a compression shirt, sleeveless overshirt, hat and gloves.
Coldest ride would have been mountain biking last week a the hydrocut in Waterloo Ontario. It hovered between -9 and -10 (C) over the course of 3 hours. It wasn’t too bad actually, except for the 6k ride to and from the trails, where the wind was really painful.
My standard poodle Sam and I ran at -5° F on Wednesday morning of this week (MN, USA). We did our usual 3 mile run, and he was not affected and enjoyed himself as much as usual.
That was my coldest for this winter.
No bragging rights on a cold ride until the water in your water bottle freezes!
Hi Ray, did a some very cold runs when I was in the military some at -25 but don’t count them as didn’t have much of a choice! The coldest I’ve done for ‘fun’ well fitness was during a real cold snap in the UK. I’d been running to get fit and loose weight so was determined to keep going, I remember it being -15 and bitter but wanted to get out as the bug had me. Two years on a lot fitter and lighter with a number of races under my belt and I’m hooked. So much so I went out this week in -2 with my winter kit on and loved it! Summer 10k races will be getting booked soon!
Since it hasn’t been above freezing since January 10 here, I’ve decided to stay indoors and torture myself on the treadmill. But I did go on an 82 mile bike ride last November that was cold and wet that I will never forget.
Went for a short run, just to say I did it, in Northern Minnesota. The bank temperature said -20 and the weather report said wind chill of -40. Fairenheit
Coldest event was UK Tough Guy 2009. They had to break the ice in the “Killing Fields” before the start and, to make life even more miserable, it started snowing during the race. I had the shakes in the recovery tent and considered myself lucky – there were a few guys not moving in the corner, behind screens, waiting for the ambulances. What makes Tough Guy so horrible are the series of water submersions – there are several of them, spaced out so that just when you think you’re going to get warmed up again, you are forced back into the water.
Well last night was challenging, running intervals and sprints around the track in rain and 40 degree weather. Not terribly cold, but the rain is sure annoying. Got my workout done in spite of it!
Not going to win any ‘coldest ever’ award here but two or three years ago when stuck in an unexpected snow-storm (pretty rare in Seattle) with traffic backed up for HOURS I instead opted to find a safe parking spot for the car and run home in the snow… it was only 2 or 3 miles at that point but in my work cloths (leather shoes, pants, button up shirt) felt like a pretty good jaunt.
Manchester (UK) Marathon 2012, April 29th – it wasn’t that cold in terms of temperature actually, albeit not very warm for that time of year, 3-4°C. But it got me cold: immense chill factor through stormy gusts and torrential rain, ‘tough mudder’ like country lanes didn’t really help – not to mention my brave stupidity in thinking: nah, it can’t rain and storm the whole time and will get warmer eventually.. The thought of my pretty winter/weather kit /at home/ did not really warm my heart, neither did the water in my shoes. I was amazed that after constantly freezing (in spite of running!) during the second half of the race I still finished, waddling through the last miles in my ministry of silly walks impression – and even more so because I didn’t even get the sniffles afterwards!
goodevening
i will have a cold run on sunday 27
i will go for a 15 k mountain race. the mountain is named Parnitha and it is near Athens
i would like the garmin very much!!!!!!!!!! hope to win it this time :)
Milwaukee in January on a business trip. Don’t know the temp but it was cold and windy.
Running in the mountains around madrid got caught by a summer storm. Temperature dropped like ten degrees on the way back. Went from hot to really cold in a heartbeat!!,
January 2012, Belgium: daily bicycle commute, approaching -15°C.
Frozen feet and hands as I jump in the shower, as well as other parts of my body ;)
Did a few runs in the cold, but my run when it was the coldest was a year ago..
It was -15 degrees and I was training for my first half-marathon, it was very cold outside but I couldn’t skip this training, it was a nice run and the cold wasn’t that hard because at the end of this run (30K) it was warm enough for me..
I did a tempo run in -18C a couple of years ago maybe not the smartest thing. Welcome to Sweden by the way.
53 degree swim at the inaugural ironman St. George….About died!
I’m from Miami so anything below 55 F is cold to me. A few years ago i was visiting my sister in North Carolina for Thanksgiving and decided to do a 12mile run in the middle of the day. It was 32 degrees and by the time i was done i couldn’t feel my cheeks or fingers.
My coldest run was when I started training for a marathon in June. I was just starting to ramp up my mileage in December the year before. December 19, 2008 with the windchill was -36 degrees celsius. I wore everything I had and did just under 12km in Calgary, Alberta Canada. This winter has been cold as well, but no windchills colder than -30…. so far. My favorite run this season was boxing day where it was -20, I was getting strange looks after 1.5 hours and I knew I had ice on my eyelashes, but I didn’t realize I had ice on my cheeks and my toque was covered in ice.
Did a tough mudder, when it was 30 degrees F. I ran, jumped into ice cold water, ran back out, jumped into a lake, ran out…run up a mountain to see snow and jumped into another lake. I got pulled out due to hypothermia.
Did i mentioned that the tough mudder on the previous day was 70+ degrees F? Son of a …
Having grown up in Wisconsin I’ve had PLENTY of cold runs… not sure one in particular stands out since there are so many!
January 2010 -11°C at bike on my daily commuter . First halt hour was not so cold, but last part was difficult for my fingers and feet. Shower was too warm for my finger, strange feeling.
Hi Ray, I’m currently training for the “Last Chance for Boston Marathon” here in Ohio where it is too damn cold at the moment. But to do a February marathon in Ohio takes some guts and a lot of training runs in the cold. So…. PICK ME! I’d love the swim features of the 910xt – also what do you think of this new “Training Effect” feature on Garmin Connect?
I’ve been running with Vibram Fivefingers for the last few months. After the first snowfall here in Paris, I decided to use them despite the cold temperature and snow on the ground. My feet were freeeeeezzziiing!
So this week used “traditional” shoes and socks when the snow came back!
I did a long run of 32km in the snow last week, it was quite enjoyable with a little sun from time to time. It was nothing compared to a walk I did a couple of years ago in Finland on the frozen Baltic Sea at -20C and a literally ice-cold wind!
My coldest run was in the Ozarks of Missouri while in the Army for Basic Training. Those were very memorable days.
Sign me up! My coldest ride was this past November…in Ottawa Canada! Riding up Gatineau parc with my buddies testing some new carbon fibre wheels. By the time we reached the top we were greeted by snow flakes… :(
Living in Australia I can’t imagine the extremes above, but my coldest run was a 32k in prep for last year’s NYC marathon. I was visiting Canberra and ran around the lake in freezing weather. I think I started at -4C and finished about +4.
This is very timely as my coldest ‘run’ is likely to be this Sunday in Tough Guy. They say it’s the daddy of all these mud/water/run type events. Given the recent cold and snow it’s shaping up to be super cold…
Just started training regularly, so not much regular history. Coldest run in Austin, TX was around 44F on 2012/12/29 for about 9 miles. Hah! Not very cold, but I got to wear my cold compression tights and sleeves for a nice change!
Training for my first marathon, I used to run up the west side of Manhattan. I ran in the rain and in the snow. I actually kind of liked it :)
Would live to have a new garmin to take with me on my future runs! Thanks!!!
Training for my first marathon, I used to run up the west side of Manhattan. I ran in the rain and in the snow. I actually kind of liked it :)… But then again, it wasn’t as cold as some of the other stories being posted. I grew up in CA though… So I’m not as used to the cold ;)
Would live to have a new garmin to take with me on my future runs! Thanks!!!
Living in Austria, the winters are quite cold. But it doesn’t feel as cold as the pouring rain and strong winds during a “winter” in the Netherlands, even when it is not freezing there…
It really depends where you are living. +3 and strong wind can feel really cold… :)
My wife, a friend, and myself rode up Mt. Hamilton late last winter. Ascent was comfortably cool. The descent, however, was freezing! We pulled into a parking lot about a quarter of the way down to discuss our options. Without warning my wife walked up to a pair of total strangers and told them they needed to drive her down to our van because she wasn’t going to continue riding in the cold! My friend and I waited for about 30 minutes next to a port-o-potty for shelter from the wind until she came back. We were woefully unprepared and learned a lot on that ride! :-)
Walking on the east coast of England a few days after Christmas the temperature was about -10°C (14°f), strong wind off the sea and absolutely freezing. Then looking back in land there was a strange mirage of two moons in the sky! Freezing but amazing day….
Live in athens. Unfortunately no cold here. The coldest run at +3c. No cold at all. i would love the experience running on snow.
Being originally from a warm tropical country, I freeze whenever the tempetures dip below 10 centigrades.. so my coldest run was a tipically rainy Brussels day when the temps were about 5 centigrades and my fingers and toes went numb but felt like frigthening frozen to me!!
Wish I get lucky this time with the 910XT!!!
medina.oliverio@gmail.com
Two weeks ago I did my first winter run. It was a fun race for the charity. I bought the winter running gear. It was sooo cold on the the starting line! As I noticed during the run, when the temperature goes on minus, it is not so good to hold your Endomondo equipped phone in the hand. :) It was -5 C I guess and it was an amazing run. I need to do something about the phone though. :)
I’ve just started running, since reading the “Born to Run” book last year!
As such, my coldest run…has been atop Mt. Si in North Bend, WA, perhaps 3 weeks ago. Though it was “Cold” I was running, and appropriately dressed, I did not really feel cold. The temperature was somewhere below freezing, as the water in my camel bak had frozen upon summiting to the top!!? I was somewhat thirsty, but the water was frozen! After descending, the water was still frozen…I was planning for a double, and only made it 1/4th the way up the 2nd time, before I returned to the parking to go home.
Another instance (sorry i’ve got many stories! =) ), was on a commute to work also around 2 weeks ago. I was cycling, and frost/ice was forming on my jacket and gloves!? I’ve ridden in the cold/snowy conditions before, but this was the first time that ice formed on my clothing apparel, when no snow/ice was outside! I took a cool picture of the frost after my commute was done.
Thanks for the opportunity, goodbye!
I was on the bike portion of a duathlon and had forgotten wind block gloves and toe covers. I have never been so miserable in my life!
In STL the weather is bi-polar! I had a 10-mile “Frostbite Race” in 22 degree weather. Doesn’t sound too bad compared to the other entries but with a windchill of 14, it was cold! I forgot to mention, there was a snow/ice storm that morning early. (BLACK ICE EVERYWHERE) To say the least, people were slippin’ and slidin’ all over the place.
I have had cold runs and bike rides but the coldest had to be the swim 2 years in the Cobourg triathlon. Lake Ontario turned over 2 days before the race and the temperature was 9 degrees Celsius. Some people opted to do the duathlon instead, but not me. After the swim i could barely ride my bike and it took forever to get a good blood flow into my legs. Fun times.
5AM ride in Montana in December, pitch black, zero degrees, no gloves. I thought I would never get the feeling back in my hands.
Woohoo – a 910xt!
Yesterday was -15F, cold stuff. But I find with a bunch of layers and warming up on the treadmill before heading out I’m good.
Over Christmas break this past year I went for a run to work of some of the holiday festivities. The snow and ice made it interesting, but ultimately accomplished my goal; to have more pie.
Nearly froze my toes off early in December 2012 after getting a Black Friday deal on a new road bike…I just had to get a ride in on it before the Idaho winter really set in.
It’s white here, all over.. Looking out for a glimpse of hope to find a living creature who decided to train like I do… but… This cold is like being inside a freezer. Those where cows are stored. Anyway, I realize that my equipment is good enough to dare one hour running through the forest. Of course I have to thank my darling for buying me a cover for my neck and mouth so I can cover my not in the first 5km. Yeah, 5km to warm up… Crazy!

I am from Arizona, I usually don’t run in the cold. But now I am living in DC and the coldest I ran in was 32 degrees, I really don’t think I can go any colder.
Thanks
Mike
There have been plenty of cold Iowa runs, but the coldest I remember it being during a workout was during a regatta. We were in Madison, Wisconsin out in the middle of a lake queuing up for the start. When we compete, we don’t wear much, and we were shivering. Snow was falling and it picked up quickly to white out conditions. They decided to call the race, but we still had to row to shore (which includes getting splashed) and step into the water to pull the boat out. I thought I would never warm up!
A long run at -6, my breath froze on my stubble, heart rate was pumping, what a 12 miler…
Going for a leisurely Christmas day swim at Dun Laoghaire in Dublin. 7 degree water, no wetsuit, refreshing!
Christmas run in Edmonton, Alberta. -26C with a nice wind out of the north.
Today 1/25/13 Baltimore Maryland 8 miles 6am start brrrr.
I just did my coldest run ever, that was a 5:30 speed workout here in Charlotte NC it was -5C which is way too cold for me!
Since moving to Colorado a few months ago I have ran up 2 14ers in winter. It’s not the cold as much as the wind…
Prague HM 2012. Arrived on Prague the day before the race, luggage did not arrive so I was looking at running with a bad case on Achilles Tendinosis in my emergency kit (no socks, lightest short and singlet I own intended for hot Costa Rica training days). Morning of the race and it’s around 2C and a light drizzle, I’m freezing to death but hey, the pain is not there so I decide to have go at it netting me PRs for 10K and HM, a picture of me with purple legs crossing the finish line and 6 months of rehab. All in all the coldest, dumbest and most rewarding race I’ve ever done.
It was last year. It was about -28oC in Montreal. I ran for about 40 min with my training partner.
This Winter we have been trail running up Mt. Teneriffe, while it hasn’t been super cold (20’s.), the last time we’re up there there was about 4 ft of snow.
Nov 7, 2012 – Ran in 30F from 6-7am in Sleepy Hollow, NY (stomping grounds of literature’s Ichabod Crane). This was memorable because the skies were clear that morning, but after the run I had a meeting until 5pm in a room with no windows. I walked outside to the beautiful, yet distressing, sight of snow on the ground. I had to get to LaGuardia for a flight back to NC at 7:30pm! I made it on time, but all flights out of NY (and most of the northeast) were cancelled due to a nor’easter. This was the week after Hurricane Sandy hit.
It’s too close to decide:
Either the 40 block (~2Mile or 3.2Km) run each way to and from the gym, during the NYC blizzard of 2010. Yes, we ran IN the blizzard. We were training for a boblsed race.
Or the bobsled race itself. That 30-40 metre sprint is awfully cold when you’re wearing nothing but lycra and a helmet and it’s -26C. The ride was worth it though.
Hey Ray…I was stupid to enter the Napa Valley Trail marathon one year – March marathon….when we had to train in Calgary – I think the coldest long slow distance run – the temperature with windchill was -32’C. The water in our bottles were frozen after an hour….the funny thing …. I managed to convince two other people to do the training with me!!!! Last time that will happen!!!
Two weeks ago I’ve been running in Singapore on Thursday, friday in Rome around Vatican and on Tueasday was beautifull morning run in freezing cold condition in my place -Poland. Everywhere was beautifull ,but nothing can’t beat forest in the winter.
i’ve run in 6°C temps on a few chilly mornings but nothing really cold. all you need apart from the the usual shorts and t-shirt is a pair of gloves
it was 28°C when i went for my morning run yesterday. i would have preferred it if it was only 6
Nothing special other than your run on the mill winter evening in the low teens.
My coldest run was likely this past Sunday. 20-odd degrees and a bit slippery in places along the Portland waterfront. My most miserable cold run was last year after I first started running. It was about 38 degrees and raining — not a great combo for a new runner, but I powered through it and made hefty use of #hardcore when I posted my run stats. ;)
I was a Nordic skier in high school/college and the coldest I ever trained in was -45 F. Yes, you read that right: -45 degrees F. My crazy coach called us up and a few of us ventured outside. School was cancelled because none of the buses would start. It was so cold that even my dog refused to go outside to go to the bathroom and peed on my dad’s lawnmower inside the garage. My fingers and toes have never recovered from that day.
Great contest – thanks for doing these! Coldest run (athletic category) would be the typical very blustery, overcast day with a howling wind because I just could not take the treadmill anymore. Coldest run (non-athletic category) would be doing laps between a hot tub and a snow angel field in Colorado. I lost skin off the bottoms of my feet when they stuck to the frozen concrete walkway.
Coldest run ever; 12k along Montevideo’s Rambla in 0º C, major headwind and garúa (drizle) in September 2009.
I’d love this to be the St Valentine gift for my hubby!!!
Me to… I don’t ride outside in the COLD!
My hubby and I just did 30-miles on the bike in a blistering 82-degrees :)
Would love a Garmin 910xt
I cycle to work all year in Southern Highlands, Australia. Coldest morning I can remember was -8C. Just by contrast, last Friday was 46C, it’s summer here now. :p
In Chicago, my rule used to be that I’d run outside as long as it was above 10* F, doing loops around UIC and Little Italy. I got used to it pretty quickly, and started to prefer the super-cold, because at those temperatures, there was no new accumulation of snow or ice to contend with. And it was much, much better than running in hot and humid summers.
Went for a ride when it was 35 degrees and a downpour. I was soaked and freezing!
I’m from Latvia and every winter we have few days when the temperature goes down below -20*C. So I have done few runs in -20*C. First 20-30 min are the coldest, but afterward it gets quite warm and isn’t that hard to run. The coldness actually motivates to run faster.
This evening (1-25-13) near Greensboro, NC I went running in an Ice Storm with 19 degree weather but the track was gravel and was the last to slick up. I kept telling myself I was stupid to be there but I wanted to finish all my mileage for the week. When I finished my coat was caked with Ice.
Hurricane Ike remnants had come to St Louis for my first half marathon with my girlfriend (now wife). We ean ten miles in a torrential downpour until they stopped the race because of flooding in the last three miles. We were so cold and bummed we couldn’t finish and when e got home, we found a foot of water in our finished basement where we had just moved in. Needless to say, it was a cold cold world.
What felt like my coldest run happened fairly recently here in Colorado: I was still six miles from home on a cold evening when my nose started bleeding. Every time I stopped to try and treat it my fingers got cold, so I had to keep moving, all the while trying to pinch my nose and tilt my head back… It went on like this for a solid mile. The best part was that I was running along a parkway, so there was lots of traffic passing by, no doubt wondering who on earth is running when it’s this cold, and why is he holding his nose?
Running a couple of years ago on the waterfront in Toronto during the winter. After I finished the run I had to pee and because *everything* was so cold and pee kinda warm it actually hurt to pee. Brrr!
I live in FL, so my coldest ride is weak sauce. Did a century ride in December. Started the day in the 40’s. totally unprepared.
Hi Ray,
I remember a flat tire just 3km into a ride at minus 5 (Celcius). Changing a tire at that temp is killing.. Warming up took forever after that ordeal..brrr..
Hope giving away keeps you warm. Take some aquavit when your in Stockholm ;)
Cheers!
Ran a 10 mile cross country race on a beautiful English frosty morning, blue sky but freezing cold. The course was rock solid – usually muddy but it had frozen. Not a good combo with Innov8s that don’t have a rock plate. Had to run another 8 miles post – race to warm up!
3 degrees C here in Sierra Nevada, Granada, Spain. My coldest run, and after it, a bath and a hot chocolate.
I live in California so it is not THAT cold. my coldest run was a 10K race a couple weeks ago..it was 27F. Now for SoCal that is freezing!!! but this Canadian…not really!
thank you for the chance to win!
-20C in Montreal right now. Wore so many layers it put your clothing guide to shame. :) Lately I’ve come to realize the beauty of being a triathlete is that you can stay indoors and spin in the warmth when it’s too cold out to run. :)
